SCOOP AND SHOVEL GRIP.
Application filed September 26,1906.
T0 aZZ whom. it may concern.-
Be it known that I,CALVIN J. RUNDELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at ayne, in the county of Wayne and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scoop and Shovel Grips; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to shovels or scoops.
The object of the invention is the provision of means for more easily and effectively handling the article named and securing a firmer hold in its operation.
The invention consists in an adjustable grip pivotally secured to the lower part or shank of the handle and adapted to move in conformity with the motions of the hand and arm by means of a combined knuckle and swivel oint.
I have illustrated the invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a shovel with my improvement attached. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of grip as the arm is attached to the shovel-handle. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line 90 y, Fig. 2.
Referring to the illustration, in which like parts are designated by similar letters of reference, A is the shank or handle-bar of a shovel or scoop.
A is the shovel-handle, and B is a grip' handle of a shovel, the shank or rounded part of which, 0, has a central annular opening 0, in which is secured a T-bolt D. The bolt is somewhat smaller than the opening to provide sufficient play and is held in placeby nut d. A semicircular strip or band E, shaped to inclose one-half the shank of the shovel, is pivotally secured to the grip-handle B by means of the bolt, the T-head of the bolt being countersunk in the strip to be free Specification of Letters Patent.

of the shank of the shovel. Freely encircling the bolt between the band E and the shank of the grip C is a raised part of the band, forming a cam e and made integral with the band. The lower half of the cam is square on the outer end, closely fitting the shank C of the grip, while the upper half, or part nearest the handle of the shovel, is rounded to give the grip the knuckle-joint described. The grip may also freely turn on the bolt, which gives it a combined knuckle and swivel movement. The semicircular strip E is secured to the shank of the shovel-handle by means of the encircling bands F F, which pass around the shank and are fastened by the boltsf f.
hen the shovel is lowered to obtain a load, the grip drops back toward the handle the arm, and as the load is raised it straightens to a rigid position and freely turns on the bolt as the load is thrown oif. The grip thus gives perfect freedom to the arm and hand of the user, while rendering unnecessary any change in the grip of the hand, and at the same time gives a stronger hold upon the shovel.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a grip-handle and the handle-bar of a shovel or scoop, of a band adjustably secured to said handle-bar, a cam upon said band, one part of which is square and the other part rounded, and a bolt freely securing the grip-handle to said cam, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I hereby afiiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CALVIN J. RUNDELL.
