Definitions
- This invention relates to a container clamping device, and in particular to a clamping device for clamping together a plurality of re-usable and collapsible containers.
- UK Patent 2104582 discloses a panel retaining clamp arrangement by means of which five or more rectangular panels of plywood or similar material may be retained either in the form of an erect box-like container or in a compact stacked condition for storage or shipment with the full complement of clamping devices needed to assemble the erected container.
- the panels and clamping devices are only arranged to make a box-like container of a specific size and shape, with the result that unusually long articles cannot readily be accommodated in such containers. Furthermore, when stacked, the aforementioned containers may tend to slide or topple in the absence of anchoring or lashing ropes.
- a clamping device comprising an L-shaped bracket having a comer edge and first and second legs extending away from the corner edge towards free ends of the bracket, each of the first and second legs terminating in a pair of first and second spaced apart clamping projections, with the first clamping projections extending inwardly towards one another and being arranged to locate within corresponding first recesses formed in adjacent faces of a first comer formation, and the second clamping projections extending inwardly towards one another and being arranged to locate within corresponding second recesses formed in adjacent faces of a second comer formation.

- the length D s of the shorter leg 16 corresponds to the common marginal distance D v .
- the legs 14 and 16 and the comer edge 12 snugly envelope the comer 79 and outer faces of the panels 68.1 and 68.2.
- the shelf 62 is formed with upper and lower peripheral rebates 80 and 82 sized to accommodate the edges of the panels 64.2 and 68.2 in a snug fit.
- the centres of the vertical slots 76.1 and 76.4 extending through the side panels 68.3 and 64.3 are positioned away from the major edges of the panels by a distance D ⁇ , with the result that the centre-to-centre distance between the clamping projections 18 and 20 and 22 and 24 equals twice D ⁇ plus D R , where D R is equal to the distance between the shelf rebates 80 and 82.
- the brackets 10 are thus able to clamp adjacent crates 58 and 60 firmly together in a stacked formation at their corners. Further crates may be added onto the stack, with the brackets serving both to interconnect adjacent crates and to hold the side walls of the crates together.
- FIG. 5 a perspective view of an alternative preferred embodiment of a clamping bracket 84 is shown having longer and shorter legs 86 and 88 with an included angle 90 of approximately 79° between the legs.
- the entire bracket 84 is cut and pressed from a sheet of sprung CS 60 MOD-type steel having a thickness of 1.4 millimetres, and radii of curvature of 3mm.
- the leg 88 has a substantially planar surface, with clamping projections 92 formed at the free end of the leg 88.
- the leg 86 has compressive projections 94 which are carried on ribbed extension arms 96.
- the acute angle of 79° between the legs 86 and 88 allows the bracket to be maintained in a condition of clamping tension when enveloped around a pe ⁇ endicular comer, which has the effect of urging the clamping projections 92 and 94 even more firmly into the slots.
- the single clamps 69 used to hold two panels together in adjoining pe ⁇ endicular relationship may have a configuration of the type illustrated at 98 and delineated by the broken line 100.
- FIG 6 a still further embodiment of a clamping bracket 102 is shown which is similar to the bracket 10 of Figure 1.
- a rectangular cut-out 104 is formed midway along the comer edge 12A, and extends into both the long and short plate-like legs 14A and 16A so as to define L-shaped interconnecting limbs 106 and 108.
- An advantage of the cut-out 104 is that it allows for greater flexure of the bracket about the corner edge 12 on the interconnecting limbs 106 and 108.
- the bracket 102 has rectangular cut-outs 30A and 32A which are substantially reduced in depth in comparison with the cut-outs 30 and 32 of Figure 1, with the result that the corresponding extension arms 26A and 28A carrying the clamping projections 18, 20, 22 and 24 are considerably shortened.
- the lever plate 50 is thus more easily accessible for facilitating the removal of the bracket on collapsing of the stacked containers.
- the legs have an increased continuous planar surface area adjacent the clamping projections, with the result that there is greater contact with the outer surfaces of adjacent comer , .,1s.
- the container 110 has a base panel 112 constituted by the uppermost panel of a pallet 56A.
- the sides of the container are defined by opposed minor rectangular panels 114.1 and 114.2 and opposed major rectangular panels 114.3 and 114.4, and a top panel 114.5 is clamped over the sides.
- the six panels are held together by means of clamping devices which are indicated schematically in broken outline at 116.
- These clamping devices may be in the form of any of the clamping devices illustrated in Figures 1, 5 or 6, in which each of the legs of the clamping devices terminate in double spaced apart clamping projections as opposed to the single clamps 69 which are normally used to hold the comer edges of the panels together.
- Each panel 112, 114.1 and 114.5 is provided with six slot formations 118 located towards the outer periphery of the panels for accommodating the double clamping projections of the clamps 116.
- the slots 118 are naturally longer than the slots 74 illustrated in Figure 2, which are used to accommodate the clamping projections of the single clamps 69.
- only two slots 118 may be required per edge of each panel. This reduces the number of machining operations required to form the slots in the panels, as well as the number of clamps required to hold the various panels together.
- a crate 110 requires twenty four clamps 116, whereas a container which is held together with single clamps of the type illustrated at 69 in Figure 2 requires at least thirty two, if not thirty six separate clamps. Further, the increased surface area provided by the double clamps 116 lends greater rigidity to the overall structure of the container.
- the vertical slots 118A and 118B may be replaced with a single pair of intermediate slots 118C located midway along the outer edges of the respective panels 114.1 and 114.3.
- additional shortened slots 120 substantially identical to the slots 76.3 and 76.4 of Figure 2 may be located in the side panels of 114.1 and 114.3 for accommodating the clamping projections 20 and 24 or 92 and 94 of the respective clamps 10 and 102 or 84.
- the panels 112 and 114.1 to 114.5 are designed to be arranged in an overlying stacked or sheaved configuration, with all of the panels being clamped together by means of the clamping devices 116 in the manner taught in UK Patent 2104582.
