Description

1 AN ANGLED SASH ADAPTOR Field of the Invention 5 This invention is directed to an assembly that allows a sliding window or a sliding door to connect with another sliding window/sliding door or with another stationary window, or with any other member at an angle other than 900 or 0*. Background Art 10 A sliding window or a sliding door traditionally connects with a jamb or with another member at an angle of 0*, It is also known to provide a sliding window or a sliding door that connects to another sliding window or a sliding door at an angle of 90. However, it is not known to provide a sliding window or a sliding 15 door that can meet with another window/door or a jamb or other type of member at an angle other than O 0 or 90*. It is also not known to provide an assembly that can allow windows and doors to meet at various different angles without requiring major modifications to the assembly. 20 It will be clearly understood that, if a prior art publication is referred to herein, this reference does not constitute an admission that the publication forms part of the common general knowledge in the art in Australia or in any other country. Object of the Invention 25 It is an object of the invention to provide an assembly that allows a sliding window or a sliding door to meet with another member at an angle other than 0 *or 90*. 30 In one form, the invention resides in an angle adaptor, the angle adaptor being provided with attachment means to enable the adaptor to be attached to a first member that may be a sliding window or a sliding door or a fixed member, and means to enable a locking member on another sliding window or sliding door or fixed 2 member to engage with the angle adaptor to fix the locking member to the angle adaptor. The locking member will typically comprise a lock tongue or a latch 5 tongue and this will typically be a rotating latch tongue otherwise known as a "parrot beak" which is a typical and well-known type of locking member to lock a sliding door or a sliding window to a strike. However, no particular limitation is meant thereby and other types of locking members may be provided including hook shaped locking members that can slide upwardly or downwardly between a locking and 10 unlocking position. The function of the angle adaptor is to enable the locking member to properly lock or latch -against an adjacent sliding window or sliding door or fixed member at an angle which is other than the ordinary 0 degree angle or the lesser is known 90 degree angle. The angle adaptor can be easily made to accommodate different angles to enable a sliding window or door to be closed at an angle other than 0 or 90*. Thus, rather than needing to replace or to manufacture a large number of components to 20 accommodate different sliding angles, it is only necessary to provide an adaptor having the required angle. The angle adaptor will typically comprise an extruded member which can be made of aluminium or similar type material. Typically, the angle adaptor will 25 be attached to the entire vertical edge stile of a sliding window/door or a stationary member such as a jamb. Thus, it is preferred that the adaptor extends from adjacent the bottom to adjacent the top of the sliding window/door etc. The angle adaptor is provided with attachment means to enable it to be 30 attached to a particular member (the member typically comprising a sliding window/door, a jamb etc). Typically, the attachment means will comprise small integrally formed clips to enable the angle adaptor to be clipped into position. However, other types of attachment means are also envisaged such as separate 3 fasteners, adhesive and the like. It is preferred that the angle adaptor is attached to a purpose stile. The purpose stile may comprise an extruded member (typically aluminium) which can 5 accommodate the angle adaptor. The advantage of this arrangement is that the purpose stile can be made in a single configuration which need not change if the angle of the meeting stiles changes. The purpose stile will typically have one end which is configured to accommodate the sash and another end which is profiled to enable the angle adaptor to be fitted to the purpose stile. 10 In another form, the invention resides in a window or door assembly, the assembly comprising a first wing and a second wing, each wing comprising a sliding window, a sliding door or a fixed member with the proviso that at least one of the first wing or the second wing is a sliding window or a sliding door, one said wing 15 being provided with a purpose stile, the purpose stile having an outer face which is provided with a channel, the one said wing further being provided with an angle adaptor, the adaptor comprising attachment means to attach the angle adaptor to the purpose stile, and means on the angle adaptor to accommodate and hold a lock tongue, the second wing being provided with a lock tongue, the first wing and the second 20 wing coming together at an angle relative to each other. The term "angle relative to each other" is meant to exclude the conventional arrangement where the sliding window or door slides against and attaches to a stationary jamb and where the edge of the sliding window or door is 25 parallel to the edge of the jamb. Brief Description of the Drawings An embodiment of the invention will be described with reference to the 30 following drawings in which: Figure 1. Illustrates an assembly comprising a first wing and a second wing each wing comprising a sliding window or door which meet at an angle of approximately 45' and where the angle adaptor is a "male" angle adaptor.
4 Figure 2. Illustrates an assembly similar to the assembly illustrated in Figure 1, except that the angle adaptor is a "female" angle adaptor. Best Mode 5 Referring to the figures and initially to figure 1, there is illustrated an assembly which comprises a first sliding wing 10 and a second sliding wing II which in this case can comprise sliding windows. Each sliding window comprises a sliding sash 12. One sliding sash contains a purpose stile 13 while the other sliding sash 10 contains a lock stile 14. Purpose stile 13 is made of extruded aluminium and comprises an inner face 15 which is provided with a channel and the channel accommodates the window glass, which is quite conventional. Purpose stile 13 however contains an outer face 16 which is also channel shaped but the channel is of unusual design having a much longer channel sidewall 17 and a much shorter channel 15 sidewall 18. An angle adaptor 19 is attached to outer face 16. Adaptor 19 extends from adjacent the bottom edge of purpose stile 13 to adjacent the top edge of purpose stile 13 and is therefore a full length adaptor. Adaptor 19 is provided with terminal 20 clips 20 to enable it to be clipped to purpose stile 13. Adaptor 19 is made of extruded aluminium and in the embodiment of figure 1 can be seen as a "male" adaptor by which is meant that the adaptor comprises a projecting male portion 21. The projecting male portion is designed to be "parallel" to the lock stile 14 to enable the parrot beak 22 of the lock stile to pass through a slot (not illustrated) in male portion 25 21 and to latch or lock against male portion 21. Male portion 21 is provided with sealing strips 26 such that when the two wings are attached, the sealing strips provide a measure of water resistance. Lock stile 14 is made of aluminium extrusion and also comprises an 30 inner face 23 containing a channel to accommodate the window glass. The lock stile 14 comprises a central portion 24 to accommodate the lock components and the lock handle 40, and an outer face 25 which is channel shaped and which accommodates projecting portion 21. When in the closed position illustrated in figure 1, the parrot 5 beak 22 is latched to projecting portion 21 and sealing strips 26 seal against outer face 25 to minimise ingress of water. Figure 2 illustrates the "female" version of the angle adaptor and 5 therefore the "male" version of the lock stile. The female version 13 clips to the unchanged purpose stile 13 in a manner similar to that illustrated in figure 1. However, the female version comprises a large channel shaped body 31 which accommodates a male lock stile 32. In this embodiment, the male lock stile is provided with the sealing strips 33 and parrot beak 22 again passes through a slot (not 10 illustrated) in the back of the female angle adaptor 30. A smaller strengthening plate 34 is screwed into the back of adaptor 30. The arrangement and design requires only the angle adaptor 13 or 30 to be changed on one of the wings while the purpose stile can be used for all angles of 15 the meeting stiles. The meeting stiles are made available at any suitable angle and the angle adaptor will need to be changed depending on the meeting angle of the meeting stiles. The meeting stiles can be reversed and therefore can be seen as 20 "ambidextrous" Throughout the specification and the claims (if present), unless the context requires otherwise, the term "comprise", or variations such as "comprises" or "comprising", will be understood to apply the inclusion of the stated integer or group 25 of integers but not the exclusion of any other integer or group of integers. Throughout the specification and claims (if present), unless the context requires otherwise, the term "substantially" or "about" will be understood to not be limited to the value for the range qualified by the terms. 30 It should be appreciated that various other changes and modifications can be made to any embodiment described without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
