Abstract
The invention is a roll on render which can be applied to a vertical surface by means of a roller using a downwards or upwards movement of the roller. The roll on render is an acrylic and cement mix type of render which includes mineral fillers, sand, dispersed acrylic emulsion, cement and lime and additives such that it can be readily applied with a roller.
Description
WO 2006/037150 PCT/AU2005/001434 ROLL ON RENDER AND APPLICATION SYSTEM Technical area: This Invention relates to the area of building surfacing and in particular to the application of render or stucco to building surfaces. The invention discloses a new type of render and a new method of applying such render to walls and the like which is simpler than previous such products and methods. Background to the invention: Conventional cement type render has had to be applied to wall surfaces with trowels and involves a person first placing the render on a hawk which is held in one hand and then applying the render to the surface with a trowel or the like. This type of render is generally pushed upwards onto the wall and requires a significant amount of strength and skill to apply. In addition the requirement of holding the render in one hand means that the worker must be strong enough to carry it while applying it. Where the work is being carried out on an elevated platform it can be necessary to carry the render on the hawk up to the platform each time it needs to be reloaded. It is difficult to provide an even surface over brickwork and the like and this kind of surfacing has conventionally been carried out by the skilled worker.
-2 Outline of the invention: It is an object of this invention to provide a render which is easier to use than previous renders and a method of applying it which largely ameliorates the problems outlined above such that people who are not skilled in this area can use it. The invention provides a render mix, characterised in that said render mix includes an acrylic resin, cement, mineral fillers, sand, and lime, such that when said render mix is mixed with water, it forms a render which is able to be applied to a vertical surface using a roller.. The invention also provides a method of applying render formed by mixing a render mix according to the previous paragraph with water, characterised in that said render is first loaded onto a roller and then applied to a vertical surface using said roller. Preferably, an upward roller movement may also be used. it is further preferred that a spaghetti mesh type roller be used. In orderthat the invention may be more readily understood we shall describe byway of non limiting example a specific embodiment thereof. Description of an Embodiment of the Invention The render of the invention has unique properties which result from the aerators, fibres and thickeners used in the mix which permit it to be easily applied to a brick surface and to stick to it as it is being applied, ratherthan to drop off. For this reason WO 2006/037150 PCT/AU2005/001434 -3 it can be rolled on to the surface from the top down rather than being forced upwards with a trowel. Although the composition and concentrations of the ingredients of the render can be varied a basic composition for a gray render is listed -below in terms of their relative parts by weight (PBW). Examples of the trade names of the ingredients used are also shown and may be used in the specification in accordance with the following. INGREDIENT PBW Cement Gray A type 480.00 Hydrated Lime (Limil) 100.00 Calcium Carbonate (OMYA 40) 200.00 Sand (16/30 ACI) 1300.00 Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (Cellosize QP-52000-H) 3.20 Hydroxyethyl Cellolose (Cellosize QP-4400-H) 1.60 Polymerisation of Propylene Ethylene Oxides (Genapol PF 80) 1.06 Cellulose Carbohydrate (Arbocel PWC 500) 12.00 Sodium Oleate 4.90 Acrylic Resin (Mowilith LDM 2080 P) 34.00 or equivalent compounds.
WO 2006/037150 PCT/AU2005/001434 .- 4 A preferred composition for a gray render is listed below in terms of their relative parts by weight (PBW). Examples of the trade names of the ingredients used are also shown. INGREDIENT PBW Cement Gray A type 480.00 Hydrated Lime (Limil) 100.00 Calcium Carbonate (OMYA 40) 200.00 Sand (16/30 ACl) 1300.00 Calcium Aluminate (Fondu Cement Gray) 25.00 Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (Cellosize QP-52000-H) 3.20 Hydroxyethyl Cellolose (Cellosize QP-4400-H) 1.60 Hydroxypropyl Starch (Tylovis SE-7) 2.38 Polymerisation of Propylene Ethylene Oxides (Genapol PF 80) 1.06 Olefin Sulphonate Sodium Salt (Hostspur OSB) 1.40 Cellulose Carbohydrate (Arbocel PWC 500) 12.00 Polvar 0.5 - 1.25 24.50 Cenolite 1.00 Zinc Stearate 4.90 Sodium Oleate 4.50 Acrylic Resin (Mowilith LDM 2080 P) 34.00 Neopentyl Glycol 6% 2.00 or equivalent compounds.
WO 2006/037150 PCT/AU2005/001434 -5 While a gray render has been described above the invention is not restricted to this colour and it may be provided in a large variety of colours and textures. A preferred method of applying the render to a wall is described below: - tape areas which do nor require render - place 4Y 2 litres of water in a 20 litre plastic bucket - using a mixing drill slowly add material until a cream like consistency is achieved, leave for 5 minutes and remix. - place roller in bucket and dip, slowly remove the roller and place it at the top edge of the surface to be rendered and slowly roll it down using gravity to apply the render. - repeat this process 3 times and then roll excess material downward and sideways. - if working with another person that person can remove excess material with a squeegee or trowel or the like with a horizontal stroke. -- if a finishing coat is required it can be applied after 24 hours preferably using a wetter coat of roll on render. By using a squeegee a person can squeeze materials into recesses in the brickwork. Preferably the squeegee or trowel is used at a 45 degree angle to the surface thereby relieving pressure on a person's hand and also giving greater control. By this means straight surfaces and brickwork can be covered easily using a relatively light weight material which is easy to work. This does not require any particular skill or strength and is suitable for home renovators. In addition, by adjusting the mix and WO 2006/037150 PCT/AU2005/001434 -6 the application means any type of surface texture can be achieved .from a rough stuccoed look to a smooth appearance. Whilst we have described herein a specific embodiment of the invention it is envisaged that other embodiments of the invention will exhibit any number of and any combination of the features previously described and it is to be understood that variations and modifications in this can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention,
