Description
Regulation 3.2 AUSTRALIA Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION STANDARD PATENT APPLICANT: Brett Lucas NUMBER: FILING DATE: INVENTION TITLE: ADVERTISING DEVICE The following statement is a full description of this invention, Including the best method of performing it known to me: - - 2 ADVERTISING DEVICE Field of the Invention The invention relates to devices and structures which are designed to display various forms of advertising and in particular, to an advertising device which is adapted to be located over the top of, or replace, an existing traffic controller box to provide a means for providing advertising and/or public information on such structures, whilst also increasing the security and reducing vandalism of the device and improving the visual appearance of a street landscape. Whilst the invention may be applied to other forms street furniture/structures and/or advertising devices or other applications, for Gonvenience sake it shall be described herein in terms of an advertising device for traffic controller boxes. Background to the Invention The revenue generated from advertising is a valued source of income for many businesses and companies and thus, there is a constant need for finding new places and avenues which can be used for advertising so that the advertising space can be sold to media companies or individuals who would like to advertise in such a space and gain promotions of their products and/or services. In particular, there is a need to find advertising spaces which have a lot of public exposure and are subjected to a lot of onlooking traffic to increase the number of people targeted by the advertisement as a means of potentially generating more interest and/or sales for the marketed company. In recent times, advertising material has started being placed on street furniture as there is often a large thoroughfare of people passing through a busy street, particularly in major capital cities and populated suburbs. The advertisements are generally placed on street furniture where people may have to stop or wait for a period of time such as bridges, bus shelters, rubbish bins, toilets etc., so that their attention may be brought to the advertisement whilst they are glancing around during their wait. Conventionally the advertisement, in the form of a banner or poster, is directly attached to the street furniture using an adhesive. However, these advertisements are commonly damaged due to vandalism or poor weather conditions thus, no longer providing a suitable source for advertising and/or generating revenue. In addition, the prior art fails to provide a device for advertising which can be applied to traffic signal/controller boxes, a structural element readily available on most main streets, roads or arterials or the like. Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate the disadvantages of the prior art by providing an advertising device which is adapted to be located over the top of, or replace, an existing traffic controller box to provide a means for providing advertising and/or public information on such structures, whilst also increasing the security and reducing vandalism of the device and improving the appearance of a street landscape. Outline of the Invention The present invention provides an advertising device including: a body portion; and at least one signage means whereby the advertising device is adapted to be located over the top of, or replace, an existing traffic controller box to provide a means for providing advertising and public information on such structures, whilst also increasing the security and reducing vandalism of the device and improving the visual appearance of a street landscape. The body portion has provided a frame portion which is adapted to form the corner and side edges and define the perimeter for the advertising device and is further adapted to support at least one side member and/or lid member affixed thereto. It is preferred that the body portion of the advertising device has provided at least one side portion, four, and a lid portion which are adapted to be affixed to corresponding sides or top respectively, of the frame portion. The lid portion is adapted to have the same dimensions as the outer perimeter of the body portion such that, when it is located over the top of the frame of the body portion, it will fit flush with the outer edges of the body portion. It is preferred that the side portion(s) include at least one panel which is adapted to be secured to the side walls of the frame of the body portion of the advertising device. A first panel is adapted to hold and display an advertisement/sign and -4 includes a holding portion in the form of a frame and at least one attachment means for securing the advertisement/sign thereto- A second panel is in the form of a protective, transparent cover panel which is adapted to protect the advertisement/sign positioned therebehind from any external damage. The protective panel is held within a frame portion and can be hingedly connected to the side of the frame of the body portion via at least one hinged bracket member. It is further preferred that the protective panel has provided a locking means, such as a bolt or the like, which is adapted to hold the protective panel in a closed position. The side walls of the frame of the body portion of the advertisement device have provided at least one outwardly extending portion which is adapted to prevent rearward movement of the protective panel and provide a space between then two adjacent panels. The outwardly extending portion has provided a scallop rebate which is adapted to receive a portion of the locking means thereon. It is preferred that the advertising device has provided at least one sealing means, in the form of a bulb seal. The bottom of the body portion of the advertising device is adapted to be open ended so that it can be secured to a base member of an existing traffic controller box via at least one securing member. The securing member is in the form of a bracket member which is adapted to secure the bottom edge of the frame of the body portion to the base member of a traffic controller box. The bracket member has provided at least one aperture therein which is adapted to receive a fastening means therethrough. In a further embodiment, the advertisement/sign is in the form of a moving display or neon/LCD/backlit display or the like. In one form, the invention provides an advertising device including: a body portion; the body portion has provided a frame portion, at least one side portion and a lid portion; the frame portion is adapted to form the corner and side edges and define the perimeter for the advertising device and is adapted to support the at least one side member and lid portion; and -3 the at least one side portion includes first and second panels which are adapted to be secured separately to side walls of the frame portion and thereby be positioned within the defined perimeter for the advertising device; the first panel is adapted to hold and display a signage means within the defined perimeter for the advertising device and includes a holding portion and at least one attachment means which is adapted to enable the signage means to be securely affixed to, and held within, the holding portion of the first panel, via a suitable fastening member; the second panel is configured and with sealing means to provide a protective, transparent cover panel substantially along the defined perimeter for the advertising device to protect the signage means positioned therebehind from any external damage; wherein the first and second panels are configured to provide spaced apart support to protect advertising material between the two rigid panels; wherein the first and second rigid panels each provides a barrier for protection of internal componentry of electrical box thereby to provide a dual protection layer for the internal componentry; and wherein the body portion is adapted in use to be located over the top of an existing traffic controller box thereby to provide a means for providing advertising and/or public information on such structures, whilst also increasing the security and reducing vandalism of the device and improving the visual appearance of a street landscape. The invention has provided at least one sealing means 60, in the form of a bulb seal which is adapted to provide an effective seal when the transparent panel 50 is in closed position to protect the advertisement/signage 41 by preventing air or moisture entering from the external environment. In an alternate embodiment, where no advertisement/signage 41 is required, it is envisaged that the transparent material in the second panel 50 can be replaced by an aluminium sheet 70, or a sheet of any other suitable material, having a finish to match the frame of the panel and body portion of the advertising device or alternatively, providing a decorative finish. Depending on the sheeting material used, a backing layer 71 such as MDF may be required to provide strength for the panel. The aluminium sheet may be secured to the frame 51 of the panel 50 via a suitable fastening means 72 such as foam tape or the like and may have provided a silicone sealing surrounding the perimeter of the aluminium sheet.
- IU In a further embodiment of the invention, it is envisaged that all components of the device 1 could be integrally formed so long as there was some access or provision for allowing insertion and removal the advertisement/signage 41 and/or accessing the traffic controller box. Whilst the invention has been described herein in terms of an advertising device 1 which is adapted to be fitted over an existing traffic controller box, it is envisaged that a further embodiment of the invention could involve at least one advertising panel being integrated into an existing traffic controller box. This may be achieved by affixing a panel to the existing traffic controller box, or providing a new traffic controller box which has at least one advertising or information panel provided on at least one side of the traffic controller box. While we have described herein a particular embodiment of an advertising device 1, it is further envisaged that other embodiments of the invention could exhibit any number and combination of any one of the features previously described.
