Description
S&F Ref: 945568 AUSTRALIA PATENTS ACT 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR A STANDARD PATENT Name and Address McNally Holdings Pty Ltd, of Applicant: an Australian company, ACN 136 178 400, of 33 Lloyd Street, Merewether, Newcastle, New South Wales, 2291, Australia Actual Inventor(s): Troy McNally Address for Service: Spruson & Ferguson St Martins Tower Level 35 31 Market Street Sydney NSW 2000 (CCN 3710000177) Invention Title: A garment Associated Provisional Application Details: [33] Country: [31] Appl'n No(s): [32] Application Date: AU 2009901391 31 Mar2009 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us: 5845c(2604626_1) 1 A GARMENT Field of the Invention The present invention relates to a garment and, in particular to, a workwear garment having adjustable sizing options. Background of the Invention Garments of all shapes and sizes are known. If a family, business or group of people wish to purchase similar garments of varying sizes, typically, each individual would need to be measured separately and each size ordered from a retailer. The retailer would then order the individual sizes from the manufacturer who typically manufactures a certain predetermined and limited number of each size garment. There are substantial problems with the above practice. When ordering a large quantity of garments such as, say for a mine sit, school or sporting club, it is typical when the garments arrive at the destination that some garments don't fit. The answer to this problem is typically bad luck and you get what you ordered. A further disadvantage is that it takes considerable time to measure each individual before placing an order. Also, with the existing system the retailer and manufacturer have to guess prior to receiving an order how many garments in each size will be sold. Typically, there is always either a shortage of one particular size or an excess of another. This uncertainty adds expense and delays to the manufacturing and retailing process of garments. Accordingly, there is a need to provide a garment which is manufactured in one size only, sold in one size only and can be altered easily by the end user. Object of the Invention It is an object of the present invention to substantially overcome or at least ameliorate one or more of the disadvantages of the prior art, or to at least provide a useful alternative. Summary of the Invention There is firstly disclosed herein a garment including: a body of fabric material to be worn by a user; the body having a central portion and a pair of elongate members extending longitudinally away from said central portion; 2 each said elongate member having a fixed end attached to the central portion and a free end remote from said fixed end; wherein said elongate member includes a plurality of substantially parallel spaced apart cuffs located adjacent said free end, each cuff covering a portion of the elongate member, so that in use, a user can select a longitudinal length of said elongate member by cutting the elongate member adjacent the covered portion to thereby reduce the appearance of fraying. Preferably, said garment is a pair of pants or shorts and said elongate members are legs. Preferably, said garment is a shirt or jacket and said elongate members are arms. Preferably, said garment includes three pre-hemmed cuffs equally spaced from said free end. Preferably, each said pre-hemmed cuff includes a fixed end attached to said member and a free end remote from the fixed end, said user selecting said length of said member by cutting said body behind said cuff at a location between said fixed and remote ends of said cuff. Preferably, said remote end of said elongate member includes additional nylon material to reduce fraying. Brief Description of the Drawings A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 is a front view of a garment of the present invention; and Figure 2 is an expanded side view of a remote end of the member of the present invention. Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiments There is schematically depicted in the drawings, a garment 1 including a body of fabric to be worn by a user. The body includes a central portion 2 and a pair of elongate members 3 extending longitudinally away from the central portion 2. Each elongate member 3 has a fixed end 4 attached to the central portion 2 and a free end 5 remote from the fixed end 4. Each elongate member 3 includes a plurality of substantially parallel spaced apart cuffs 10 located adjacent the free end 5 so that in use a user can select a longitudinal length of the elongate member 3 by removing one or more of the cuffs 10.
3 In a preferred form, the garment I is a shirt, jacket, pair of pants, shorts, a pair of overalls, jumpsuit or the like where the elongate member 3 are the arms or legs. Each elongate member 3 could include any number of cuffs equally spaced from the free end 5 of the elongate member 3. As best seen in Figure 2, the cuffs 10 include a fixed end 20 s attached to the member 3 and a free end 25 remote the fixed end 20. In use, the user selects the length of the elongate member 3 by cutting the body behind the cuff 10 at a location between the fixed and remote ends 20, 25 of the cuff 10. In this way, the cut by the user will be hidden by the overlying cuff 10. It should be noted that the cuff 10 can be any type of cuff, such as a turned up fold at the bottom of a trouser leg to a fold or band io serving as a trim or finish to the bottom of a sleeve. The cuff can be formed in any way and could include elasticized, ribbed or reinforcing or any other such material. In the preferred form, the garment is manufactured from CorduraTM a fabric manufactured by DuPontTM and there are three cuffs 10. Preferably, the remote end 5 of the elongate member 3 will include additional materials such as nylon or the like to reduce fraying is when cut by a user. In use, if a business such as a factory or the like wishes to order new overalls for it's workers, for example, the business does not need to waste time having each individual worker measured and the sizes recorded. The business simply needs to order the quantity of overalls required from the retailer. Similarly, the retailer does not need to waste time 20 and simply orders the quantity from the manufacturer. Again, the manufacturer does not need to waste time as they will manufacture only one size. The manufacturer would then deliver the quantity of garments to the retailer who passes them on to the business. The business again reduces time by simply distributing the overalls to its workers who will then manually cut the lengths of the arms and/or legs behind the cuffs 10, where 25 necessary to adjust to their individual size. In the preferred form, each of the seams of the cuffs 10 would be tripled stitched and nylon material added. However, other material and stitching techniques could be utilized to strengthen the area being cut by the user and to ensure a neat finish. In a preferred form, the cuffs 10 would extend over a range of about 10 cm and provide the typical short, regular and tall sizes. Also included could be an 30 adjustable portion to change the body shape.
4 Although the invention has been described with reference to specific examples, it will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that the invention may be embodied in many other forms.
