Abstract
A depth limiting device (10) is provided for use with a rotary drilling tool in drilling a hole in a workpiece to a depth limited by the device. The device (10) includes a skirt (12) adapted to frictionally engage the workpiece at the completion of the drilling of the hole, a spindle (14) located axially through the skirt and having one end for connection to a gripping device of the rotary drilling tool, and an opposite end for retaining a hole forming drill bit at a precise position corresponding to the required depth of hole to be drilled in the workpiece. The spindle (14) provides a rotatable mounting for the skirt (12), but the spindle (14) and skirt (12) are jointly rotatable during the drilling of the hole. The device (10) also includes means for isolating the rotation of the spindle (14) from the skirt (12) when the skirt is frictionally engaged with the workpiece whereupon the skirt ceases to rotate. A set screw (44) is retained radially in the spindle (14) for removably attaching the skirt (12) to the spindle (14), and there is a cut-out portion (24) of the skirt (12) which enables access to the set screw. In use, the skirt (12) is manually rotatably positioned relative to the spindle (14) so that the set screw (44) is covered by the Skirt (12) during the drilling of the hole to prevent the build-up of debris on or around the set screw, but is manually repositioned after the drilling of the hole by rotating the skirt (12) relative to the spindle (14) so as to expose the set screw (44) through the cut-out portion (24) of the skirt, thereby enabling access to the set screw.
