S&F Ref: P043326 AUSTRALIA PATENTS ACT 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR A STANDARD PATENT Name and Address Azuma Design Pty Limited, of Applicant: an Australian company, ACN 002 031 307, of 160-162 Newton Road, Wetherill Park, New South Wales, 2164, Australia Actual Inventor(s): Michael Brian Alchin Address for Service: Spruson & Ferguson St Martins Tower Level 35 31 Market Street Sydney NSW 2000 (CCN 3710000177) Invention Title: A lock Associated Provisional Application Details: (33] Country: [31] Appl'n No(s): [32] Application Date: AU 2011903168 08 Aug 2011 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us: 5845c(6563435_1) 1 A LOCK Field [0001] The present invention relates to locks and more particularly but not exclusively to locks for sliding doors. Background of the Invention [0002] Locks for sliding doors can be surface mounted or mounted internally (mortice lock). [0003] A disadvantage of some of these known locks is that the tongue can be in the extended position when the door is moved to the closed position, which can result in damage to the lock and/or striker region of the doorjamb. [0004] Locks that are designed to address the above issue have a further disadvantage in that they are generally complex and therefore expensive and prone to failure. Object of the Invention [0005] It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate at least one of the above disadvantages. Summary of the Invention [0006] There is disclosed herein a lock for a door or window, the lock including: a body; a tongue mounted in the body for movement between a retracted position substantially located in the body, an extended position projecting outwardly of the body; a locking means mounted in the body and operable to retain the tongue in the extended position; a tongue lock member mounted in the body and movable between a lock position retaining the tongue in the extended position, and a release position permitting movement of the tongue between the extended position and the retracted position; 2 a retaining part movable between a first position retaining the lock member in the lock position, and a second position permitting movement of the lock member between the lock and the release positions; a release part movable between a first position preventing movement of the lock member to the lock position, and a second position permitting movement of the lock member between the lock and release positions; an actuator to be fixed to a door or window surround, the actuator being configured and to be positioned to engage the release part to move the release part to the second position of the release part when the door or window is closed; wherein the locking means is operatively associated with the tongue lock member so that movement of the locking means in a predetermined direction moves the tongue lock member to the lock position thereof when said release part is in the second position thereof, while movement of the locking means in a direction opposite said predetermined direction moves the lock member to the release position thereof; and wherein said tongue is a first tongue, and the lock includes a second tongue, the tongues each being mounted for angular movement about a respective pivot axis, the axes being generally parallel and transversely spaced, with the tongues engaged so that they move angularly in unison in opposite directions [0007] Preferably, said locking means is a lock cylinder. [0008] [This paragraph is intentionally left blank]. [0009] Preferably, the tongue lock member is linearly moved between the lock position and the release position thereof. [0010] Preferably, the retaining part is pivotally mounted on the lock tongue for angular movement between the first and second positions of the retaining part. [0011] Preferably, the release part is a pawl mounted on the lock member and angularly movable between the first and second positions of the release part. [0012] Preferably, the body has side walls, with one of the side walls having an "L" slot, and the pawl includes a projection engaged in the slot to retain the lock member in the lock position.
[0013] Preferably, the body includes a front wall, a rear wall, and a pair of side walls, with one of the side walls being provided with an "L" slot engaged by the release part to retain the release part in the second position thereof, with the release part having a projection engaged within the slot. Brief Description of the Drawings [0014] A preferred form of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: [0015] Figure 1 is a schematic side elevation of a lock for a sliding door; [0016] Figure 2 is a schematic parts exploded isometric view of the lock of Figure 1; and [0017] Figure 3 is a further parts exploded isometric view of the lock of Figure 1. Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiment [0018] In the accompanying drawings there is schematically depicted a lock 10. The lock 10 includes a striker I1 that would be typically fixed to the surround for the sliding door, such as a door frame. The striker 11 includes a flange 12 that would be fixed to the door frame by means of threaded fasteners. Extending from the flange 12 is an actuator 13 from which there extends barbs 14. [0019] The lock 10 includes a hollow body 15 having a rear wall 16, top and bottom walls 17, a front wall 18 and side walls 19. One side wall provides a cover that is fixed to the walls 17 and 19 by threaded fasteners so that the hollow body 15 provides a cavity within which the working mechanism of the lock 10 is located. [0020] The lock 10 includes a pair of lock tongues 20 and 21 that are mounted in the body 15 for angular movement about generally parallel transversely spaced axes 22 and 23 that extend generally normal to the side walls 19.
[0021] The tongue 20 is mounted in the side walls 19 by means of a pivot member 27 that is slidably located in a cylindrical aperture 28 of the tongue 20. The pivot member 27 has an angularly extending projection 29 that is engaged within an angularly extending recess 30 of the tongue 20 so that there is some lost motion between the pivot member 27 and tongue 20. The pivot member 27 has a central square aperture 24 within which the square drive shaft of a handle passes so that a user, by manipulation of the handle can move the tongues 20 and 21 in the angular directions 25 and 26. The tongues 20 and 21 have slidably engaged projections 31 and 32 that cause the tongues 20 and 21 to move in unison in the directions 25 and 26. As is best seen in Figure 1, the projections 31 and 32 overlap so that upon the tongue 20 being moved by operation of the handle in the direction 25, the tongue 21 moves in the opposite direction 26. [0022] Each of the tongues 20 and 21 has a hook 33 that are located in a respective one of the recesses 34 so to engage a respective one of the barbs 14. A coil spring 35 is engaged with the tongue 21 and body 10 to urge the tongue 21 in a direction opposite the direction 26. Accordingly the spring 35 urges the tongue 20 in a direction opposite the direction 25 via engagement with the projections 31 and 32. Accordingly the hooks 33 are urged by means of the spring 35 into the recesses 34. [0023] Mounted in the body 10 is a lock cylinder 36. The lock cylinder 36 has on a surface thereof a projection that is angularly moved by operation of a key. The projection is engaged within an angular slot 37 of an actuator 38. The actuator 38 is mounted for angular movement about an axis 39 that is generally parallel to the axes 22 and 23. The actuator 38 is mounted in the side wall 19. The actuator 38 also has a radially extending projection 40 that again by operation of a key is caused to move angularly about the axis 39. [0024] Slidably mounted in the body 10, by sliding engagement with the side walls 19 and front wall 18 as well as flange 41, is a lock member 42. The lock member 42 is a bar that is retained for sliding linear movement in the direction 43. The direction 43 is generally normal to the axes 22, 23 and 39. Mounted in the lock member 42 is a retaining part in the form of a pawl 44 that is urged by means of a spring 45 in the direction 46. The pawl 44 moves angularly about the axis 47, with the axis 47 being generally parallel to the axes 22, 23 and 39. The pawl 44 also has a pair of lateral projections 48 that slidably engage within "L" slots 49 in the side walls 19. Each slot 49 includes a step 50 that is engaged by a respective one of the projections 48.
[0025] The lock member 42 also has a ball 51 and spring 52, with the spring 52 urging the ball 51 into a selected one of the recesses 53 or 54 of the front wall 18. The spring loaded ball 51 merely acts as a locator for the lock member 42. [0026] Also mounted on the lock member 42 is a release part 55 for angular movement about an axis 56, with the axis 56 being generally parallel to the axis 47. The release part 55 has a flat projection 57 against which a spring 58 is compressed to urge the release part angularly in the direction 59. Spaced from the projection 57 is a further projection 60, with the projection 60 being spaced on the other side of the axis 56 from the projection 57. The projection 60 is located within an "L" shaped slot 61 of one of the side walls 19. The slot 61 has a step 62. [0027] In operation of the above described lock 10, the lock member 42 is linearly movable between a release position with the ball 51 engaged in the recess 54, and a lock position with the ball 51 located in the recess 53. With the hooks 33 located in the recesses 34, the lock member 42 is movable to the lock position, that is a position abutting the tongue 21 preventing the tongue 21 moving in the direction 26 and therefore also preventing movement of the tongue 20 in the direction 25. By preventing such movement, the hooks 33 are retained in the recesses 34, which in turn prevents the door to which the lock 10 is attached being moved to the opened position. To release the tongues 20 and 21 for movement, the cylinder 36 is operated so that the projection 40 engages the pawl 44 to move the projections 60 from engagement with the step 50. Thereafter the projection 40 engages the lock member 42 and moves the lock member 42 to the release position, that is the position at which the ball 51 is located in the recess 54. [0028] When the lock member 42 is moved to the release position, that is the position at which the ball 51 is engaged with the recess 54, the release part 55 is moved so that the projection 61 is moved to engage the step 62. This is under the influence of the spring 58. [0029] When the lock member 42 is in the release position, that is with the ball 51 located in the recess 54, the door can be moved between the open and closed positions by operation of the handle. When the door is being moved to the closed position, the hooks 33 engage the barbs 14 to be displaced outwardly until the hooks 33 can move into the recesses 34. To open the door, the handle is merely turned pivoting the tongue 20 in the direction 25 and the tongue 21 in the direction 26 so that the hooks 33 no longer engage the barbs 14.
[0030] When the door is in the closed position and is to be locked, the hooks 33 are engaged in the recesses 34 and the cylinder 36 operated by a key to move the lock member 42 to a position abutting the tongue 22, retaining the hooks 33 in the recesses 34. When the cylinder 36 is operated the actuator 38 is pivoted in the direction 63 to move the lock member 42 to engage the tongue 21. The pawl 44, under the influence of the spring 45, engages the step 50. The lock member 42 is thus retained in the lock position. The lock member 42 can move into engagement with the tongue 21 as the actuator 30 has displaced the release part 55 so that it can move along the slot 61. [0031] When the door is to be opened, the lock cylinder 35 is again operated to move the actuator 38 in a direction opposite the direction 63. The projection 40 engages the pawl 44 to move it from engagement with the step 50. The projection 40 then engages the lock member 42 and moves it to the release position, that is with the ball 51 engaged in the recess 54. When the door is opened, the actuator 13 is moved from engagement with the release part 55, thereby allowing the projection 60 to move into engagement with the step 62. Accordingly the release part 55 prevents movement of the locking member 42 to the lock position, that is a position at which the ball 51 is engaged with the recess 53. By this arrangement, the tongues 20 and 21 cannot be locked unless the actuator 33 has engaged the release part 55. Accordingly engagement of the striker I1 with the tongues 20 and 21 (within the locked position) is prevented.
