Complete Specification for the invention entitled: "AGRICULTURAL SHARES".
The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method ofpcrformir. it known to me/us -2- The present invention relates to an agricultural share.
Agricultural shares typically comprise a nose area and a mounting area. *The nose area is arranged to work the ground whilst the mounting area is arranged for mounting of the share to an agricultural implement.
In order to have a satisfactory working life, it is necessary for at least part of the nose area to be hard.
However, if the mounting area is also hard this can lead to brittleness in the mounting area which results in the share i 10 fracturing in use in the mounting area.
00 0* The present invention provides an agricultural share in ooo 00. which brittleness in the mounting area is reduced whilst 0 0 00 still maintaining a satisfactory degree of hardness in the 0 4 1 5 nose area.
*o i In accordance with one aspect of the present invention there is provided an agricultural share which comprises two major Oir parts which are substantially mirror images of one another, O each part comprising a major face having a point each, said 6 t C major face having a first inner edge extending rearwardly from the point and a second, outer edge extending rearwardly from the point and diverging at an acute angle away from the first edge, each inner edge also having a rebated portion S remote from the point,,each rebated portion having a side generally aligned with the first inner edge, said parts being joined together along their inner -3 edges with the inner edges abutting each other and being welded together to join the two parts together, the joining of the inner edges also mating the rebated portions to form a recess with a closed, inner end, which recess has located therein a tongue which is located at a spacing from the inner end of the recess so as to form a mounting aperture, and the tongue is welded to the sides of the rebated portions to fix it in place.
The present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:- Figure 1 is a plan view of an agricultural share in o e a accordance with the present invention; and Figure 2 is a side elevation of the agricultural share ooou C 0 15 of Figure 1.
o a of a In the drawings there is shown an agricultural share U0I comprising two major parts 12 each having a point 14 and a first, inner edge 16 (shown in phantom in c orr 000, Figure 1) extending rearwardly from the point 14. Each part 12 also has a second, outer edge 18 extending rearwardly from the point 14 and diverging at an acute angle away from the first, inner edge 16. It can be a a Q seen that each edge 18 has an inital portion diverging o at a small angle from the edge 16 and a major portion diverging at a larger angle. The initial portion may be formed by building up weld material as will be t: 4 -4described.
Each part 12 has a rearward end 20 which interconnects the inner edge 16 with the outer edge 18. Further, at its end remote from the point 14 each inner edge 16 has a rebated portion 22 having a set back side 24 which is parallel to the inner edge 16.
The major parts 12 may be cut from flat metal plate to the desired qhape. As the parts are flat and images of one another they can be formed by cutting a plurality of identical shapes from the metal plate and reversing one of a pair of shapes so that the eo inner edges 1.6 can be placed in abutting relation. The o0 major parts are disposed at an angle to one another ooo so that the inner edges 16 define between them recess o 15 which is triangular shaped in cross-section recess o 0 4 0 0 t which contains weld material.
The weld material which joins the inner edges 16 0 together in the recess then forms a base for deposition of a length 26 of hard facing extending rearwardly from the points 14 to the rebated portions 22. The i length of hard facing material 26 protects the centre of the share 10 from abrasion and, as can be seen in 4 Go Figure 2, is raised so that it also protects the region of the share containing a mounting aperture which is formed as will be described. Further, the deposition of the hard face material on the weld material enables the hard face material to extend right to the nose of the share formed by the points 14 without affecting the profile of the nose.
Also, it is found that the leading ends of the major parts 12 can become broken off in manufacture and in this case it is convenient to weld up the leading ends with weld material v>en welding the inner edges 16 together.
In this case, the points 14 may be formed with an initial portion diverging at a small angle from the inner edge 16 as shown in Figure 1.
Conveniently, the inner edges 16 are tack welded together on first and this tack welding is followed by a continuous S weld.
The welded assembly is then heat treated to harden the S 15 whole assembly to a suitable degree of hardness such as 0 0 oo S 50 Rockwell C.
Then a tongue 28 is inserted in the rebated portion 0 o defined by the rebates 22. As the major parts 12 oo are disposed at an angle to one another the sides 24 are .20 also disposed at an angle to the vertical. Therefore, the sides of the tongue 28 are correspondingly shaped o to enable the tongue 28 to fit snugly in the rebated S0 portion. The tongue 28 is located so that its innermost end 30 is spaced from the inner end of the rebated portion. Thus, there is formed a mounting aperture 32 to enable the share 10 to be mounted to an agricultural 00 o oot op 0 o 0 0 00 00 0 pooP 0 PC 00 oPoC p #0 00 1 o 00 o s op *0 4.
S I 6 implement in known manner.
The tongue 28 is welded to the sides 24 so as to fix it in place. As shown the tongue 24 has a rearward extension 34 which is arranged to engage with ameans for preventing lateral pivoting movement about the mounting aperure 32 of the share 10 in use.
The welding of the tongue 28 to the sides 24 causes the mounting area of the share 10 to lose some of its hardness. However, in the mounting area of the share hardness is less significant than it is in the nose area formed by the points 14. Further, the reduction of hardness is also accompanied by a reduction of brittleness and thus there is less risk of the share fracturing in the rear of the mounting aperture 32 or 15 the extension 34 in use.
The major portion of the share 10, especially that adjacent the nose, substantially retains its original hardness such as 50 Rockwell C.
The shares 10 of the present invention can be made in a wide variety of sizes such as to make shares suitable for combines, widelines and scarifier.
A typical metal which is useful for forming the shares of the present invention is known as Bisalloy manganese type hardened steel which has a hardness of about 50 to 60 Rockwell C.
The hard facing typically has a hardness of about i r r -7 Rockwell C.
Modifications and variations such as would be apparent to a skilled addressee are deemed within the scope of the present invention.
