RICE CO., Patent Attorneys, 28A Montague Street, Balmain N.S.W. 2041 Complete Specification for the invention entitled: REFRACTORY LINING FOR ALBESSEMER CONVERTER The following statement is a full description of this invention including the best method of performing it known to us:- -I r i.V. E B. RICE CO PATENT ATTORNEYS This form is suitable for any type of Patent Application. No legalisation required.
Background of the Invention The instant invention relates to a refractory lining for a o orCebV-eer vesse.\ Bessemer, 1 cQ teWortl In the past, ie -r converters wherein molten iron is treated with pure magnesium have been lined with a refractory eew material to protect the metal casing. The refractory lining has been held in place by tamping the lining between the metal casing Ves a a 3 B of the Beesome-r and corresponding templates.
TQ Alternatively, the lining has been compacted by vibration. This "system has several disadvantages: It is time-consuming. The ,.refractory material must be dried and sintered after tamping or :compaction and must be preheated to a high temperature before vesse vesse I using in the esaee ter. A stand-by r4-Q must therefore be kept ready and pre-heated, with the surface temperature pf the refractory material remaining nevertheless relatively low in spite of an intensive mode of operation, and this results in deposits of slag.
It is the object of the instant invention to eliminate these described disadvantages and to provide an economical lining Vess e\ easily put into place for a ass4 ern3 la i it/ Summary of the Invention This objective is attained by providing a refractory lining for a ceatemer comprising a metallic casing and a lining made from a high-grade ceramic composite material. The lining is constructed in the form of prefabricated elements which fit together and in place against the interior surface of the metallic casing.
Brief Description of the Drawingrs Fig. 1 shows a eR= onwvort awith a prefabricated, refractory lining.
Fig. 2 shows an enlarged detail of Fig. 1.
oDetailed Description of Preferred Embodiments Referring to Fig. 1, the metallic casing 4 of a-B*!a e~~tecan for instance comprise several elemerts, including a 0forward element 1, a central element 2, and a bottom element 3.
00 The elementq 1, 2, and 3 are held together to form a unit by Sfastening means, for example, bolts (not shown) inserted into the flanges 12. Into these elements 1, 2, and 3 of the casing 4, corresponding prefabricated elements 5, 6, 7, made of high-grade refractory composit~e material are inserted and fitted together.
This system eliminates thce need for time-consuming tamping by means of templates and makes it possible to replace quickly an 2

element of the lining which is damaged during operation of the The prefabricated elements 5, 6 and 7 are illustratively made from a ceramic refractory composite material 9 best seen in Fig. 2. The ceramic refractory composite material 9 normally comprises a layer 9a which permits a high surface temperature, essentially equal to the temperature of the melting, and a second layer 9b which ensures good insulation. Preferably, the ceramic ;3 refractory material 9 is made from well known materials suitable vesses for lining suchconverters, for example, from aluminum oxide or zirconium oxide materials. In this manner the slag deposits are reduced. Due to the fact that the ceramic composite material is pre-sintered, the pre-heating need only be of short duration while at the same time the drying and sintering steps are eliminated.
To assemble the ceramic composite material, relatively thin layers 9a and 9b are used, said layers being supported by the yt basic lining 10, made, for example, of refractory concrete. Upon insertion of the prefabricated elements 5, 6, 7, the space between the ceramic composite material 9 and the basic lining may be filled with another material 11, sand. i In a further variant, it is possible to fill the space between the inner, prefabricated layer 9a, made of high-grade,
