rFi,77 P dAd iti Id Actual Inventor: Address for Service; F STAMP TO YtALU Oj F AA Spruson Ferguson, Patent Attorneys, Level 33 St Martins Tower, 31 Market Street, Sydney, New South Wales, 2000, Australia Complete Specification for the invention entitled: A PERFORATOR The following statement is a full description of this Invention, including the, Iest method of performing it known to me/us 5815/2 i -2- The present invention relates to perforators and more particularly but not exclusively to perforators used in offset printing presses.
The existing perforators employed in offset printing presses have the disadvantage that they project In the path of travel of numbering mechanisms mounted within the machine. Accordingly, where a numbering mechanism is employed, the perforator must be positioned so as to rot interfere therewith as it passes the perforator. Accordingly, it is necessary to space the numbering mechanism from the perforator. This has the disadvantage that a line of perforations cannot be located adjacent numbers printed by the numbering mechanism.
It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate the above disadvantages.
There is disclosed herein a perforator for a printing, press said perforator comprising an elongated body to extend about a cylindrical surface of the printing press, mounting means at one end of said body enabling mounting of the perforator to the press, a perforator wheel mounting assembly at the other end of said body adapted to pivotally support a perforated wheel for rotation about an axis transverse of said body, wherein said mounting assembly includes a perforating wheel carriage movably mounteJ onr said body so as to be movable between an extended OO position and a retracted position, resilient means biasing said carriage to said extended position, an elongated flexible element extending from said carriage to said body and tensioning means to tension salid element to move said carriage between the retracted and extended positions thereof.
A preferred form of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein;: Fig. 1 is a schematic side elevation of a perforator; Fig. 2 is a schematic side elevation of an end portion of the perforator of Fg, 1; Fig. 3 is a schematic end elevation of the end portion of the perforator of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a schematic plan view of the end portion of the perforator as shown In Fig. 2; Flg. 5 Is a schematic plan viw of a metal strap employed In the perforator of Fg. 1; Fg. 6 Is a schematic plan view of the other end portion of the perforator of Fig. 1; Fig. 7 is a schematic part sectioned side elevation of the end N 8 11 portion of the perforator as shown in Figure 6; Figure 8 is a schematic end elevation and front elevation of a tensioning member employed in the perforator of Figure 1; Figure 9 is a schematic elevation of a catch employed in the perforator of Figure 1; and Figure 10 is a schematic end elevation, side elevation and plan view of a carriage employed in the perforator of Figure 1.
V In Figure 1 there is schematically depicteo a perforator 10 having an v elongated body 11 to extend arcuately about a cylindrical printing surface upon which there is mounted a numbering mechanism which passes along the circular path 12. The body 11 has a mounting means 13 at one end including a clamp member 14 which is threadably attached to the body 11 by means of bolts 15 so that the clamp member 14 engages a bar passing through the passage 16, A further passage 17 is also provided through which a bar passes, which further bar pivotally supports the perforator At the other end of the body 11 is a perforator wheel mounting 18 which includes a carriage 19 slidably mounted on the body 11. The carriage 18 pivotally supports a perforator whe al 20 which rotates about an axis transverse of the body 11. The carriage 19 is slidably movable between an extended p~si'Lion and a retracted position, The carriage 19 is biased to the extended position by means of a compression spring 21 which abuts the body 11 and the rear portion of the carriage 19, In the extended position, the wheel 20 contacts a sheet material 22 so as tQ provide a line of perforations therealong.
Extending between the carriage 19 and the other end of the body 11 is an elongated flexible element in the form of a resilient metal strap 23, One end of the strap 23 being fixed to tfle carriage 19, while the other end oF the strap 23 is atta ched to a tensioning assembly 24, The tensioning assembly 24 includes two pins 25 between which the strap 23 passes. The remote end of the strap being fixed to the body 11 by means of a threaded fastener 26. A tensioning member 27 engages the portion of the strap 23 extending between the pins 25 so that movement of the tensioning member V7 will tension the strap 23. The tepsioning member 27 is moved by means of a threaded adjustment member 28, To selectively retain the carriage 19 In the retracted position, there Is provided a catch 29 having an operator manipulable arm 30 and a barb 31 which engages the carriage 19, The catch 29 is biased to engage the carriage 19 by means of a helical spring 32.
JC/529t 3 To limit outward movemen position thereof, there is prc 11 and engages an abutment sur limit movement of the carriage In operation of the abo\ the carriage 19 relative to th tension in the metal strap 23.
As best seen in Figure pair of parallel arms 35 be.wE which the carriage 19 is slide H-shaped transverse cross seci engage the longitudinal side portion 38 of the carriage 19 The carriage 19 is further prc spring 21, The other end of defined in the body 11,
I
ii It of the carriage 19 beyond the extended )vided a pin 33 which extends through the body face 34 formed on the carriage 19 to thereby 19.
'e described perforator 10, the position of ie body 11 is adjusted by adjusting the 2, one end of the body 11 is provided with a een which there is defined a slot 36 within ably received. The carriage 19 is of a :ion so as to provide flanges which slidably surfaces of the arms 35, with the central being -lidably recevied within the slot 36.
ovided with a passage 39 which receives the :he spring 21 is received within a passage JC/529t 4
