COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR THE INVENTION ENTITLED: "METHOD OF FORMING A TUBE" The following statement is a full description of the invention including the best method of performing it known to the applicant.
1 I _1 THIS INVENTION relates to a method of forming a tube. In particular, the invention is directed to a method of forming a tube from two sections of uPVC strip.
A method of, and machine for, forming a tube from uPVC strip is disclosed in our International Patent Application No. PCT/ 1 U87/00403 (International Publication No. W088/03865).
Present methods of joining spirally wound plastic tubes are difficult and unreliable. This is i, because: e the plastic strip has outer ribs which are difficult to seal, and so external collars or sleeve 0 joints are not practical; internal collars decrease the crosssectional area of the tube and generally can only be "sealed effectively on one side; and oo oa one-part spirally wound strip is difficult to butt join as the male and female locking 20 sections of the strip have to be aligned accurately.
This, coupled with the fact that the strip tends to twist and open, means that spirally wound butt joints have very limited success.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a method of butt joining a two-part strip Which does not need accurate alignment of the locking edges and which can be carricd out in the field very simply.
It is a preferred object that the former strip, of the two-part strip, be butted and taped J 30 together before the tube is wound.
It is a further preferred object that the joiner strip extends across the connected former sections.
Other preferred objects of the present invention will become apparent from the following 2 i ~7ii=*Wi*i"'i r~il 1- ~olranrr~-, description.
In a broad aspect the present invention resides in a method of forming a tube from two lengths of former strip including the steps of: cutting the adjacent ends of two former strips to a complementary shape; butting the ends together and securing them together with tape means to form a joint between 4 0 the former strips; 0 10 feeding the former strips through a :00040o winding machine to form a tube, the adjacent side edges 4 o of each, or both, of the former strips being butted together and secured by a joiner strip; and S(4) applying a sealant and/or filler externally to the joint.
o0 If the joint opens slightly after the tube is expressed from the winding machine, it can be pushed Sad together by wrapping a tension band around the tube, '0o1 over the joint, and tightening same before step j.i effected.
The adjacent ends of the former strip may be o cut square, with a mitre or V-cut or other suitable shape so that the end of one former strip will exactly S match the adjacent end of the other former strip.
To enable the invention to be fully understood, a preferred embodiment will i\ow be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIG. 1 is a sectional end view of a former strip and joint strip; S1 30 FIGS. 2(a) show alternative end cuts for the former strip ends; and FIG. 3 is a schematic side view of the joint.
The tube 10 is to be formed of lengths of a former strip 11 and a joiner strip 12, both strips being extruded from uPVC (see FIG. 1).
The former strip 13. has a substantially planar body 13 with external reinforcing ribs 14. Upstanding flanges 15 are provided along each side edge with inwardly directed heads or grooves to be engaged by the respective side flanges 17 of the generally U-shaped joiner strip 12.
The adjacent ends 18 of two former strips 11 are cut at complementary 900 or 45° angles, or Vees (FIG respectively) and are butted together. A heavy duty, waterproof, tape (not shown) is applied to the inner smooth surface of the butted former strips 11 to secure the strips 11 together.
The former strip 11 are fed to a winding machine, of the type described in International Application No. PCT/AU87/00403, which helically winds the former strips 11 so that one side flange 15 of one 0" turn of a former strip 11 abuts the other side flange of the former strip 11 in the next (or subsequent) turn.
The joiner strip 12, also fed to the winding machine, N 4 20 engages the abutted flanges 15 to secure them together and so form the tube 10. The joiner strip 12 is wound over the joint between the two former strips 11 as its sees it as a continuous former strip.
The resultant tube is continuously expelled from the. winding machine and an epoxy sealant/filler 19 is applied externally to the joint 20 to seal the latter.
In this manner, the tube 10 can be formed from a plurality of former strips 11 butt jointed together f and secured by a joiner strip.
If it is observed that the joint has opened slightly when the section of tube containing the joint is expelled from the winding machine, a metal band 21 can be wrapped around the tube 10, over the joint, and tensioned to close the joint 20 before the sealant/filler 19 is applied externally to the joint.
Using this method, the lengths of former strip can be easily connected together to enable the tube 10 to be formed continuously to any lengch required.
As the joiner strip 12 primarily acts to secure the abutted side edges 18 of the former strip(s) 11 together, and has little (if any) sealing function, the adjacent ends of the joiner strips 12 wound around the tube need not be sealed with the expoxy sealant.
10 The present method provides a simple, yet effective, method for joining the former strips used to i form the tube and avoids the problems with the present methods discussed above.
Various changes and modifications may be made to the embodiment described without departing from the scope of the present invention defined in the appended claims.
