00 00 0 0 0 0 a Complete S, cificatio y for the invention entitled: "PESTICIDAL COMPOSITION" The following statement is a full description of this including the best method of performing it known to invention, us -1- (a memoer ot mne urm o01 jLUVijn o COLLISON for and on behalf of the Applicant).
Davies Collison, Melbourne and Canberra.
E
THIS invention relates to pesticidal compositions useful in the control of pests such as ticks and flies on animals, especially ruminants. The invention is further concerned with the prophylaxis of pest invasions upon such animals.
Known dip compositions suffer from the disadvantage that animals must be treated by plunge dipping or showering frequently in order to preserve the prophylactic action of the dip. Depending upon the density of the pest population, dipping is usually required on a weekly basis.
o0 0 It has been proposed to attach tags to animals so 0a 4 0 that an insecticide contained within the tag, o000 usually a pyrethroid migrates therefrom over the 15 animals body thereby giving tie needed protection.
While such tags are effective they are inadequate in that the insecticide migration is limited to 0 0 those parts of the animal's body that come into 0 0 *t contact with the tags or tho quantity of active 20 ingredient that migrates is insufficient for co$ complete control. Ticks especially, tend to invade parts of an anirml's body which are sparsely covered by hair, such as the perineum and axilla and there is a danger with tags that these predilection areas of the animal's body will not receive the required protection.
-2- ~,B~uar~ -3 It is an object of the invention to provide a veterinary pesticidal composition which will minimise the disadvantages of known dips and tags.
According to the invention a pesticidal composition for topical application to the body of an animal, comprising a pesticidal material and a fluid carrier therefor, the composition being characterised in that the carrier includes a settable polymer material selected from the group of polyolefins, polyacrylates, vinyl compounds and a natural polymer sticking agent and a volatile solvent therefor which is adapted to evaporate upon exposure to the atmosphere whereby the composition, when applied in use to an animal's body, sets to form a skin which adheres to the animal's body, which skin incorporates the pesticidal material in a manner permitting the migration of the pesticidal material from the skin to the body of the animal.
Further according to the invention the skin permits Smigration therefrom of the pesticidal material whereby the pesticidal material spreads over an animal's body S'1 from a skin patch formed over a limited zone of the body of the animal.
Thus the carrier may be a liquid which sets on application to an animal's body and the sticking agent Ar^i41 may comprise at least one constituent of the carrier.
I L-I--J( Such sticking agent preferably comprises a polymer material in a solvent therefor, the solvent evaporating upon exposure to the atmosphere by application of the composition to an animal's body.
The polymer material may be a polyolefin, such as polyethylene; a polyacrylate such as polymethyl methacrylate; a vinyl compound such as polyvinylchloride or a natural polymer such as a rubber and a host of other polymer materials.
Thus in the preferred composition according to the invention the polymer material is dissolved in a 00 0 suitable volatile solvent which evaporates, within o o« a short period after topical application of the composition to tn animal's body, leaving the Soao 15 polymeric carrier with the pesticide dispersed or dissolved therein sticking as a skin patch to one or more selected areas of the animals body. The 0 Q So, pesticide acts as a pest control agent in the skin 0 ab o° patch itself but the patch also provides a depot o o 20 from which the pesticide migrates over the hide of the animal giving a degree of control also in e. adjacent areas. By applying the composition of the 0 o invention as a patch to predilection areas for 4
I
ticks or other insects upon the animal, as well as to zones spaced therefrom, the migration action of the pesticide is able to give good control of the insects in such predilection sites as well as adequate control over other parts of the animal's body.
The pesticide may be an insecticide or mLxture of insecticides with or without other active materials such as nematicides, pheromones and bactericide. or adjuvants such as emollients and the like.
In the preferred composition according to the oo.. invention an insecticide of the pyrethro:-d class, o o° preferably one selected from alphimethrin, cypothrin and deltamethrin, is dissclved or o 0.
o o 15 dispersed in a liquid polymer material such as polyvinylchloride dissolved in cyclohexanone, methyl ethyl ketone, isopropanol and/or acetone.
0 00 o D o. a Also according to the invention the liquid dip is applied as a spray to the animals body especially 0 o 20 to predilection sites of ectoparasites on the body.
00 0 5 In one form of the invention the pesticidal composition is provided as an aerosol employing a freon gas or other suitable propellant such as butane. Alternatively compressed air or inert gas, such as carbon dioxide, suitably containerised may be used to create a fine spray which is to be directed onto the entire surface of the animals body or onto selected zones thereof.
The following examples illustrate the invention:- Example 1 o ot q t o A pes';icidal composition was made up comprising:- CYPOTHRIN 6,45% m/v NAPHTH[ENIC BASED TECHN::CAL WHITE 1,45% m/v DURASOL L 12 TO 100,00% per volume The product referred to under the trade mark of DURASOL comprises:- DIMETIIYLAMINOETHYL METHACRYLATE 12% m/m ISOPROPANOL: ACETONE (60:40) 88% m/m 6 The pesticidal composition of this example was prepared by dissolving the pyrethroid cypothrin in about 80% of the durasol whereafter the technical white oil was added with stirring and the composition was made up to the final volume with the balance of the durasol.
The liquor obtained was the2 filtered through a 250mm 40mu sintered stainless steel filter cartridge and the filtered ,;olution was suitable for use as a spray-on liquid Iesticidal composition employing a hand spray pump or as an aerosol utilising butane gas as a propellant.
o 0, 000 0 o o a 0000 0 00 0Q 0 0 00 So. A pesticidal composition was riade up comprising:- 0000 CYPOTHRIN 6,45% m/v MYRISTYL PROPIONATE 1,25% m/v 0 0' DIBUTYL PHTHALATE VINYL ACETATE 12,90% m/v 0 0 ISOPROPANOL: ACETONE per volume 0 00 Q0 The pesticidal composition of this example was 20 prepared by breaking the dibutyl phthalate vinyl acetate into chips of approximately 2,5cm and leaving the chips for at leapt 48hrs in about 7 0 A i .ii-;-ru i i i L-L"IL^r of the isopropanol/acetone solvent, the sludge thus obtained was stirred well until dissolution of the polymer was completed whereafter the myristyl propionate and cypothrin compounds were added and the mass stirred until a clear solution was obtained. As with example 1, the solution was filtered and found to be suitable for delivery by a spray pump or packed as an aerosol.
In tick control tests employing the pesticidal compositions of examples 1 and 2, two groups of cows that were free of ticks were treated by spraying the first and second groups respectively oQ 0 oog with the compositions to form skin patches of the 0 0o Soo compositions after evaporation of the solvent.
15 These patches were formed upon the predilection o 00a o0 sites of the animals, including the ears, point of shoulder, scrotum/udder, escutcheon and anus. A third group of cows employed as a control and also Q O °oo° bearing no ticks was left untreated.
o 00 0a 0 o°°o 20 The three groups of cows were then placed in a tick infested location and were examined after 7 days.
u 0 0 The control group were heavily invaded especially in the predilection sites of the animals while the 8 ri if* n iiil l li^H llll]u i::TI'_iir l treated groups were free of ticks in the predilection sites and only very lightly infested in zones adjacent thereto.
After 34 days there was a heavier infestation of ticks in the animals of the treated groups but the infestation was still substantially less than that of the control g:7oup, the assessment being a 100% control after 7 days of ticks of the species amblyomma, hyalcmma and r.evertsi and 50-60% control thereof after 34 days.
Many embodiments of the invention exist within the 0 0 o o 0e broad concept 'Lereof. Thus a broad range of 00 0 1 0o pesticides may De used including any suitable 0004 0 pyrethroid, such as cypothrin as well as a broad 0000 0 0o o*or" 15 range of liquid carriers therefor. The essence of the invention resides in the utilisation of a setable liquid carrier for the pesticide to act as a sticking agent therefor when the composition is 0 40 o t o applied as a spray to an animal's body. The 20 composition of the invention may be utilised alone, as a long acting body patch for animals such as cattle and sheep, or it may be used together with eartag protection means, the patch being applied selectively to hairfree zones of the animal's body.
