Complete specification for the invention entitled: REVOLVING DOOR The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to 1 -rnc -tiT e-i o 00 e 0 s~ 0 0o re0 o 0o BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to a revolving door.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION In one aspect, the invention provides a revolving door comprising a rotatable structure having a plurality of upright panels extending outwardly at angularly spaced locations from a central upright column, wherein at least portion of said column is formed as a display cabinet. Thus, the column may be formed with at least portion thereof open and/or glazed with transparent material so as to enable viewing of articles disposed within the column. The column may have shelves or the like to permit positioning of articles for display thereon.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The invention is further described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which; Figure 1 is a perspective view of a revolving door assembly constructed in accordance 1 3 with the invention; Figure 2 is horizontal section of the door assembly of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a vertical section of the upper portion of the door assembly of Figure 1; Figure 4 is a perspective view of a lower support member incorporated into the door assembly of Figure 1; and Figure 5 is a scrap side view of the door assembly of Figure 1.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION In Figure 1, a revolving door assembly 10 is shown as including a door 14 rotatable about a vertical axis within a wall opening 20 formed in a wall 22.
Thn door assembly 10 includes a fixed upper roof 24 and a fixed lower floor 26 and the door 14 is °0 mounted between these for rotation about a central vertical axis. More particularly, the door 14 is shown as including a number of panels 28, in this case four, which panels extend in upright position radially outwardly at equi-angularly spaced intervals around the central upright axis. The panels extend outwardly from a central column 32 of the door 14.
Column 32 is of upright square prismatic form formed from four upright rectangular panels 34 (figure 2 for example).
The door 14 may be constructed, as shown, by positioning the panels 28 and 34 between upper and lower support members 44, 46. Members 44, 46 are of a generally similar form, each being as shown in figure 4, comprising a square plate 48, around the periphery of which is provided a channel-like double i I i_ wall 50 which defines a rectangular slot 52 therein.
Members 44, 46 each have, extending from the corners of the plate 48, respective outwardly extending arms 54 which are likewise of double walled construction and of generally channel shaped cross section to form slots 56. For the member 44, the slots 52, 56 open downwardly and for the member 46 they open upwardly.
The four panels 34 comprising the column 32 have upper and lower edges thereof positioned in slots 52 whilst the upper and lower edges of the panels 28 are 0 received within the slots 56 of the members 44, 46.
0 The panels may be secured by any suitable means such as by adhesive to the members 44, 46.
Preferably, the panels 28 are formed of S0" glass and, as shown in figure 5, one panel may have a hinged door 34a to enable access to the central oo column to be achieved. As shown, too, shelves 58 may o o0: be provided in the column 32.
For enabling rotation of the door 10, the oo*. members 44, 46 have coaxial shafts 70, the shaft 0000 extending upwardly in the case of the member 44 and downwardly in the case of the member 46. These shafts 70 are axially aligned and coaxial with the intended axis of rotation of door and are received in respective upper and lower bearings in the roof 24 and floor 26, of which only the bearing 72 is shown (figure 3).
In use, the door assembly 10 functions as a conventional revolving door so as to enable persons to move through the door opening 20 from one side to the other by passing around the axis of rotation of the door 14 and by rotating the door. The column 32 comprises a display unit for displaying goods such as goods for sale.
In the described construction, the four panels 28 may be of glass or of other transparent form in order to improve visibility to the column 32, but this is not essential. Although, as shown, the column 32 is comprised of the simple transparent structure defined by the four panels 28 (which may cojoin at the apeces of the rectangular prism comprising the column) it is not necessary that the column be so constructed. It could alternatively be formed of a rigid elongate rectangular framework having upper and lower horizontal members of, say, planar square form, corresponding vertically aligned corners on these members being rigidly interconnected by upright members. In this case, the central column may desirably to be left partly open or wholly open at the sides. Of course the column 32 may be other than square prismatic in form such as otherwise polygonal in cross-section or being cylindrical.
The described constructions have been advanced merely by way of explanation and many modifications and variations may be made hereto without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention which includes every novel feature and combination of novel features herein disclosed.
Claims (4)
1. A revolving door comprising a rotatable structure having a plurality of upright panels extending outwardly at angularly spaced locations from a central upright column, wherein at least portion of said column is formed as a display cabinet.
2. A revolving door as claimed in claim 1 wherein said column is formed with at least portion thereof open and/or glazed with transparent material so as to enable viewing of articles disposed within the column.

4. A revolving door as claimed in any preceding claim wherein said column is of upright polygonal o :form and the panels extend substantially radially outwardly from corners of the polygonal cross-section. A revolving door substantially as herein SQ described with reference to the accompanying drawings. -6-1 The described..ax-.angement .has- been, -advanced merely by way of explanation and many -modifications may be made thereto without eapt- -ting from the spirit and scope of the inven-lo-n which includes every novel feaureand ination of novel features herein Dated this 11th day of April 1988 SECTON PTY.
