ii' !!1 r Background The present invention describes a lightweight block mount of posters, prints and like materials, and the method of manufacture of the same. For the purpose of this disclosure, the term "poster" will be used to collectively describe posters, prints and like materials, 10 Existing block mounting techniques use a wooden backing board. This produces a heavy finished product and the cut edges of the board do not have a a' high quality finish. In addition, this technique ,69 requires the cutting of the board on a large and \expensive bonchsaw.
Existing lightweight backing boards, such as those sold under the Registered Trade Mark FOMt0R" are used in picture framing, but are ,a 20 unsuitable for block mounting since they lack zigidity and hardness. In addition, they are prone to bowing.
Obectives of the Invention The objectives of the present invention are to it pt roA)e a lightweight block mount for posters that has a high quality edging, can be cut with a blade 30 and does not have the rigidity, hardness and bowing 'limitations of existing lightweight mounting boards.
It is a further objective of this invention to provide a means of manufacture of the same.

The present invention consists in a rigid and lightweight poster, print or like material block mount, comprising a 15 to 25mm thick planar layer of expanded polystyrene foam, two opposing surfaces of which each have adhered thereto a layer of a material dimensioned to cover each surface, the surface or surfaces intermediate said opposing surfaces being covered by an edging strip or strips, one of the layers of said material having adhered thereto a poster, print or like material dimensioned to 10 cover said material.
In another aspect the present invention further consists in a method of manufacturing the abovementioned block mount comprising adhqiring a layer of a material to each of two opposing surfaces of a 15 to 25mm thick planar layer of expanded polystyrene foam, adhering a poster, print or like material to one of the layers of material, trimming the polystyrene foam layer, layers of material and poster, print or like material to size uising a blade and straight edge, and adhering a~n edging strip or strips to cover the surfaces intermediate the two said opposing surfaces.

The pester is glued to one face of the board and a -protective coating of some known material such as a varnish or vinyl laminate is -applied to the face of the poster.
The manufacturing method consists of five steps: Step 1. Backing Board Production The backing board is made by gluing a layer of cardboard to each face of a 15mm to 25mm thick sheet of EPS.
20 It is preferred that the EPS is of a class H or VH (according to manufacturing standards set out in AS 1366, part 3 1982.) It is also preferred that the cardboards are 200 500 grams per square meter (gsm) in weight. It is further preferred that the cardboards are coated (smooth) on one side, with the said side facing outwards.
Step 2. Mountinc of the Poster on to Board The poster is glued on to one side of the backing board.
It is preferred that the poster is mounted on a board of slightly smaller length and width then itself. It is further preferred that the gluing is facilitated by the use of a vacuum press.
1 ii ;i ~i ;i I ii P9 2 _r L Step 3. Trimning of the Mounted Poster The mounted poster is trimmed back to the inside of the outer edges of the backing board so that the board and the poster are cut at the same time, giving a clean edge. This trimming is carried out using a blade and straight edge.
gjt!p APPlication-of. Edgingse Edging otrips with widths the same as the thickness of the board are glued to the four raw edges of the board.
The edging can be of any material but would be preferably of a high mechanical strength, have a rough inner surface, and an outer surface of good appearance with a range of colours and textures.
Stop 5. ProtectiveCa4 A protective coating such as a varnish, vinyl-laminate or some other known material is sill applied to the surface of the poster.
It is preferred that a hanger or some other moans of attachment of the block mount to a wall is affixed to the back or sides of the block mount.
Sent-Mode of _Carryint out Invention The oloing is the best mo of carrying out the invention, but it is understood that numerous variations and refinements are possible without departing from the spirit of the invention.
P93 01 A block mount consisting of a poster glued on to a 21mm. thick board made of a central core of 21mm 0 a 91thick If-class EPS and two outer layers of o approxitmately 280gsm cardboard with coated (smooth) side facing outwards; the block mount is edged with 2lnim wide melanine impregnated edging strips sold under the Registered Trade Mark "DUROLJN4 1 and its 00:4#4surface is protected with a varnish; a nylon cord is 0 10 attached to the back of the board at two anchors to form a hanger.
Xn its manufacture, the board is made by gluing the cardboards on to the EPS with a suitable adhesive, The board is then cut to a size I 10mm less than the poster in length and width. A suitable adhesive is applied to one surface of the board and this surface Is centrally positioned on to the back of the poster. The two Items are then pressed together using a vacuum press, The mounted poster is then trimmed together wi~th a small strip of the board using a blade and straight edge. Anl 18mm wide double sided tape Is applied to the four edges of the board. lVour 2lnun wide edging strips are then stuck to the edges of the board via the adhesive. The surface of the poster Is then cleaned and varnished. The hanger Is attached to the back of the board. The hanger consists of a nylon cord tied at each end to a plastic anchor which is in turn glued to the board at two (2) spaced points such that the cord in between forms an effective hanger.__ P9 4
