RICE CO., Patent Attorneys, 28A Montague Street, BALMAIN. 204,, a Actual Inventor Address for Service Complete Specification for the invention entitled: "LIGHTING FITUE The following statement is a full description of this invention including the best method of performing it known to Us:- APPLICATION ACCEPTED AND AMENDIMENTS hLO\VE

la The present invention relates generally to lighting fixtures and in particular the invention provides an improved lighting fixture which exhibits a high degree of "sparkle".
For some years, lighting consultants have been encouraging the use of reduced brightness equipment to control glare at normal angles. However, as success has been achieved in reducing the brightness of lighting equipment, consultants have searched for devices to compensate for this lack of brightness. In many installations, this search has resulted in the introduction of sparkle devices. Normally, sparkle is provided by exposing the filaments of a large number of very small wattage incandescent lamps.
15 The present inventions consists in a lamp assembly too comprising a light source, a reflector located adjacent tu the light source to reflect at least a portion of the light emitted from the source, said reflected light C forming a beam, and a veil of mesh located in said beam to 20 provide sparkle, said mesh being of a material having a substantially reflecting sucface.
Preferably the reflector will be a substantially *0 parabolic glass reflector and the light source will be a metal halide lamp mounted substantially at the focal point of the reflector.
Mounted immediately adjacent to the lamp is a specular aluminium reflector to control the light output and produce a street lighting distribution.
S. In the preferred embodiment the reflector is of 30 transparent glass and is internally ribbed to provide additional sparkle while also providing an omnidirectional source of lighting.
In the preferred embodiment the axis of the reflector is vertical and the veil of mesh forms a cylinder suspended from the lower edge of a substantially parabolic ii .1 i-j--

it will be recognized that other mesh sizes, both smaller and larger, might be used, depending upon the application and the degree of sparkle required.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:- Fig. 1 is an elevation view of a lamp standard made in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 io a sectional plan view of the lamp standard of Fig. 1 looking through section line and Fig. 3 is a detail elevation of the lamp assembly and sparkle device of the lamp standard of Fig. 1.
15 Referring now to the drawings, the lamp standard comprises a base 10 which can be formed of polished stone or cast concrete, and a lamp supporting structure mounted on the base 10 and comprising a mounting plate 11 adapted to be bolted to the base 10, three upright poles 12 and a lamp assembly supporting plate 13 in the form of an annular ring. In the preferred embodiment the structural elements of the standard are of painted galvanised steel.
The lamp assembly atop the standard comprises a substantially parabolic glass reflector 16 which is transparent and has internal ribs 20 which provide a degree of sparkle. Within the parabolic reflector and mounted at its focal point, is a metal halide lamp 19 carried by a lamp fitting 18 extending from the carrying plate 13. A metal cap 17 on top of the reflector 16 covers an opening, enabling cooling air to flow vertically through the reflector while deflecting rain to the outside of the reflector. Electrical connection to the lamp carrier 17 is via a cable running internally of the base and one of the poles 12 and which runs up the inside of the reflector 16 to the carrier 17.
-3- Suspended from the lamp mounting plate 13 is a cylinder of stainless steel mesh 14 which is attached the standard only at its upper edge and is weighted by a ring extending around its lower edge. This cylinder of stainless steel mesh extends around the periphery of the vertical beam formed by the substantially parabolic reflector 16 and reflects an image of the lamp 19 from a plurality of surfaces to provide the effect of sparkle which in turn significantly enhances the visual impact of the light fitting when in use.
The mesh selected for use in the preferred embodiment is a standard stainless steel crimped mesh woven from 1.6mm diameter wire and having a diamond shaped aperture with a 16mm maximum dimension and with the sides of the apertures being at 450 to the axial direction of the Scylinder.
In the described embodiment, the substantially parabolic reflector 16 is transparent, such that a o substantial proportion of the light emitted from the light S" 20 source 19 is transmitted through the reflector, thereby providing an omnidirectional light source which will light not only the surrounding walkways or avenues but also any foliage present about the lamp standard or extending in a canopy over the lamp standard. However, in other 25 embodiments of the invention, opaque reflectors can also be used.
A geometric shape 21, in this case a pyramid, is provided at the base of the lamp standard such that the downwardly directed beam produced by the reflector 16 illuminates the geometric shape 21 to further enhance the S visual effect of the lamp standard.
It will be recognised by persons skilled in the art that numerous variations and modifications may be made to the invention as described above without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as broadly described.
