The current method of installing chemical roof or rock bolt anchors is as follows: i) The correct size hole is drilled into the strata, to be bolted; ii) A chemical cartridge is inserted into the hole and is held in place by the operator until the bolt is inserted into the hole; iii) The roof bolt is inserted into the hole and pushed to the back of the hole rupturing the chemical cartridge; iv) The bolt is rotated to mix the chemicals in the cartridge to correctly blend the two part resin; and v) The bolt is tensioned by rotating the nut to the correct torque setting.
In some mines the strata to be bolted can be up to 16 ft above the floor of the mine, this means that an operator has to climb up on a ladder or drums or the like to reach the roof.
Also, if a chemical cartridge of a non rigid nature is used, there is difficulty in inserting the cartridge into the hole, especially if the roof is high.
The present invention seeks to ameliorate these problems by providing a hand held injector for inserting and holding a chemical adhesive cartridge into a rock bolt hole in strata comprising a hollow elongated member open at one end so as to receive a chemical anchor cartridge; a connection at or adjacent the other end of the hollow elongated member adapted to be connected to a supply of compressed air, and trigger 2 ine uommlssloner or Jatents ARTHUR S. L A.S.C. 3 0370k/sc means whereby activation of the trigger means opens a valve associated therewith which introduces compressed air into said hollow elongated member to drive said chemical anchor cartridge out of said open end of said hollow elongated member.
Preferably, the trigger is located at the open end of the hollow elongated member and has an aligning means which when inserted into the hole aligns the open end with the hole mouth. Preferably the valve is a slide valve. Therefore, with the aligning means in the hole the operator simply pushes the injector against the strata which operates the trigger, blowing the chemical anchor cartridge into the hole.
S 01 The invention will now be described with reference to the atl accompanying drawings in which: a, a Fig. 1 illustrates an embodiment of the present invention
O
in use; and Fig. 2 illustrates one embodiment of the present invention.
It would be difficult, utilizing existing systems, to insert chemical anchor cartridges into roof bolt holes located in a roof the height shown in Fig. i. However, with the present invention a chemical anchor cartridge is loaded into the injector 1 and the open end of the injector is aligned with the mouth of the drill hole 2. Air is then introduced into the 4injector blowing the chemical anchor cartridge to the end of the drill hole 2. To ensure that the cartridge stays in.the drill hole 2, packing material can be blown from the injector A behind the cartridge.

1, iA" 'V :l One embodiment of the invention is as illustrated in Fig. 2. The injector comprises an injector tube 3 slideably located within a tubular body 4. The injector tube 3 has an open end 5 onto which is attached the trigger means 6.
The trigger means 6 comprises an aligning nozzle 7, for insertion into the drill hole, and an annular projection 8 which abuts against the strata when the aligning nozzle 7 is inserted inthe drill hole.
The other end of the injector tube 3 is connected to a valve 9 which is biassed into its closed position by spring 10. Connected to the valve 9 is an air line connection 11.
To operate the injector, packing material 12 (this is r Qr used only if required) is placed in the injector tube 3.
*444 A chemical anchor cartridge 13 is then placed in the :o injector tube 3, and the trigger means 6 is placed over the open end 5 of the injector tube. The aligning nozzle 7 is placed in the drill hole until the annular projection 8 abuts against the strata. The tubular body 4 is forced by the operator to slide over the injector tube 3. This raises the valve off the valve seat and introduced air into the injector tube 3 to propel the packing material 12 and the cartridge 13 into the drill hole.
The aligning nozzle and annular projection could be integral with the injector tube. Alternatively the injector could comprise a single tube and use a trigger means located remote from the open end.
It should be obvious that variations and alterations can be made to the embodiments described without departing 4

from the spirit or the scope of the present invention.
