I
C$007177 THIS INVENTION relates to an arrangement for engaging a member with an elongate shaft or rod, and in particuilar to an arrangement to allow for the engagement of a plate, carrying on one side an engagement member for use in the scaffolding industry, and on the other side securing means to engage the plate with and relative to the shaft or pole.
In the building and construction industry, where scaffolding is often used, it is normally a requirement that a toe board be provided, that is a board at the front of the i o l scaffolding, to prevent matter from falling or being pushed off the scaffolding. Such toe boards are at present secured and maintained in position such as by the use of nuts and 0. boots, wedges and mechanical fixing clamps. These are often inefficient, and are in particular time-consuming to position and maintain in place.
AD0 0 So4. It is an object of this invention to go some way towards overcoming the above problems and to provide a means whereby such problems are overcome or at least minimised.
atraightforward and efficient means for attaching or locating toe boards in position.
It is a further object of another aspect of this invention, to provide an arrangement for engaging a first member relative to an elongate shaft or pole.
According to one aspect of this invention there is provided an arrangement for engaging a first member relative to an elongate shaft or pole, said first member being in the form of or comprising a substantially flat or planar plate; at least 3 two open faced clip portions being formed with or attached to a first side of said plate; open faces of said clip portions extending in opposite directions, inwardly towards each other, and being laterally spaced apart one from the other such that a passage is defined between opposing sides of said clip portions; the arrangement being such that in use, an elongate good shaft or pole may be positioned within said passage between s the sides of said clip portions, the plate thereafter being at a 44 o 0 least partially rotated relative to said shaft or pole so that o said open faced clip portions engage thereabout from opposite sides, such as to engage and maintain the plate in position 0,0 0 relative to said shaft or pole.
o 0 a 0 44 According to a further aspect of this invention there is 44' provided a toe board mounting clip for use in scaffolding, including a plate having locating means on one side thereof, adapted in use to locate one or more toe boards; a second side of said plate being formed or provided with at least two open faced clip portions; open faces of said clip portions extending in opposite directions, inwardly towards each other and being laterally spaced apart one from the other, such that a passage is defined or formed between opposing sides of said clip portions; the arrangement being such that in use, an elongate shaft or pole is positioned so I i
-I-
as to be located within said channel and between said opposed sides of said clip portions; the plate thereafter being at least partially rotated relative to said elongate shaft or pole, thereby causing said opposingly directed and open faced clip portions to engage about said elongate shaft or pole from opposite sides thereof, such as to maintain said mounting clip in position relative to said elongate shaft or pole, whereby said locating means is able to engage with one or more scaffolding toe boards.
This invention will now be described by way of example only, and with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: 00 0 °FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a toe board mounting 0 0* 0 0 clip according to one form of the invention; a FIGURES 2, 3 and 4 are drawings showing various steps in 135 the location and engagement of a mounting clip according to to one form of the present invention, relative to an elongate shaft or pole.
The mounting clip 1 of the present invention comprises a plate 2, being a substantially flat or planar plate formed of an appropriate material such as metal, plastics or the like.
The plate 2 is provided or formed with locating means 3 to locate and engage with one or more scaffolding toe boards (as will be described hereinafter).
Xn the form of the invention shown in the accompanying drawings, the locating means 3 is in the form of a channel, such as for example an inverted shaped channel, formed by extending or bending the plate 2 at substantially right angles, into a base portion 4 and thereafter into a side portion 5, substantially parallel to but spaced apart from the plate 2. preferably the mounting clip 1, consisting of the plate 2, the base 4 and side 5 are integrally formed one with the other. Thus, a channel 3 is provided, defined by and extending between the inner surface 2b of the plate 2 and the inner surface 5a of the side The side 5 can extend upwardly or outwardly from the base 4, for the length of the plate 2. Alternatively, in other forms of the invention, the side 5 may extend only part way oCt from the base 4, for example one-half, one-quarter or onethird the distance or length of the plate 2.
It is however important that the locating means define a channel or receptacle to allow engagement with one or more scaffolding toe boards.
er a oa g 01, *b a o a a a oo ar a o a a a a o,, Sao *r 0 id While the invention is described by way of example only, with reference to the mounting clip 1 being of a substantially inverted shape (such as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings), it should be appreciated that the invention has equal application to locating means of other shapes and configurations. For example, the locating means 3 could be of a substantially normal shape.
On the outer side 2a of the plate 2, securing means are provided to allow for the clip 1 to be engaged with and relative to an elongate pole or shaft (to be described hereinafter).
In a preferred form of the invention two clip portions are provided, being substantially semi-circular in formation and having the bases thereof formed with or attached to the outer surface 2a of the plate 2. The clip portions 7 and 8, are substantially semi-circular in formation and the open faces thereof extend inwardly towards each other but in opposite directions.
The clip portions 7 and 8 are preferably attached to the outer side 2a of the plate 2, by having the bases thereof r I- r -i-u i adhered or welded to said outer side 2a of the plate 2. In a further form of the invention they can be integrally formed therewith.
The clip portions 7 and 8 are laterally spaced apart one from the other, so as to form a passage 9 between opposing but adjacent and spaced apart inner sides 7a and 8a of the clip portions 7 and 8. This will be described hereinafter.
In a preferred form of the invention the front faces 7b and 8b of the clip portions 7 and 8 extend along the same axis, which in one form of the invention is preferably the 00. centreline 10 of the outer side 2a of the plate 2.
0 4 0 9 0 o° The above however is by way of example only, and it should be o appreciated that the clip portions 7 and 8 may extend 49 outwardly from the outer side 2a of the plate 2 in any spaced relationship, as long as they define a channel therebetween 0 o0 through which, as will be appreciated, an elongate shaft or o° pole can be positioned.
In use, where it is desired to locate the toe board location j 0 means 3 relative to an elongate shaft or pole 11, the 0 mounting clip 1 is located and positioned such that the elongate shaft or pole 11 (such as a shaft or pole of a scaffolding structure) extends through the channel 9 formed between the spaced apart clip portions 7 and 8, so that in a preferred form of the invention the longitudinal axis of the shaft 11 is substantially transversed to the longitudinal axes of the front faces 7b and 8b of the clip portions 7 and 8. This location is shown in Figure 2 of the accompanying drawings. On the mounting clip 1 being so located, with the elongate shaft extending through the passage 9 thereof, the mounting clip 1 is at least partially rotated, such as in the directions of the arrows ts*own in Figure 2, to result in a partial positioning such as shown in Figure 3 of the drawingsp and to result in a positioning and location such as shown in Figure 4 of the drawings, where the mounting clip is shown as having been partially rotated through *to 00 0 90 C0 00 0 0 #o 4 i r" approximately 450, from its original position, so that the clip portions 7 and 8 are again facing inwardly towards each other, but are also extending a least partially about and gripping, from opposite sides, the elongate shaft or pole 11.
This engagement of the semi-circular clip portions 7 and 8, partially about the pola 11, allows for a positive engagement of and with the shaft 11. If it is desired to remove the mounting clip 1 from a pole or shaft 11, a reverse partial rotational moment is applied to the mounting clip 1 to release 1U the clip portions 7 an 8 from the shaft 11 and to thus disengage the mounting clip 1 from the shaft 11.
0 0 0* o As shown in Figure 4 of the drawings, once the mounting clip 1 0* 0 has been located relative to the shaft 11, it is able to o engage over for example a toe board 14 of a scaffolding op S1 structure.
It will be appreciated that in other forms of the invention the toe board locating means 3 may be facing upwardly, in a substantially normal formation, such as to locate the one or more toe boards therewithin.
It has been found that this means of locating and securing a toe board in position, is particularly straightforward and efficient.
While the invention has been described with reference to the mounting of a toe board locating means 3, it should be appreciated that the invention has equal applcation to the releasable mounting of other articles to an elongate pole or shaft. Indeed to any upright. For example, the securing means of the present invention could be used to mount a plate or a pole or shaft, where the plate was provided on the other S side thereof, with some other appropriate attachment, light, fixing or the like. It is envisaged therefore that in other forms of the invention the fixing means of the present invention will allow for a plate or a member including a plate to be mounted relative to an elongate pole or shaft, and so as to releasably engage the arrangement with an elongate pole or shaft in a straightforward and efficient manner.
0 This invention has been described by way of example only and o° it should be appreciated that improvements and modifications 0 may be made thereto without departing from the scope thereof, da 4 as defined by the appended claims.
