Complete Specification for the invention entitled: A WINDOW AND FRAME HAVING A SASH WEATHER SEAL The following statement is a full description of this invention including the best method of performing it known to me:- ~LII~I~l~II~W- IP O 3 .7/S LA r) rL P1 ~j2 l.I t A WINDOW AND FRAME HAVING A SASH WEATHER SEAL i 5 This invention relates to a window and frame having a sash weather seal and relates particularly, but not exclusively to a swing-out type window and frame such as an awning sash or casement sash window and frame which has a chain winding mechanism or other mechanism for permitting the window to be opened and closed.
Hitherto in the art of manufacturing wooden windows and frames, it has been a problem to provide for good weather sealing and particularly so in relation to exposed locations and high wind locations such as locations which can experience cyclones or the like.
3 Usually swing-out windows are manufactured with a wooden frame and the economies of manufacture require that as little as possible wooden materials be used.
It is known that a lower part of the frame in which the window seats may have a stepped profile so that it will act like a rebate against which the window can seat. The height of the rebate is normally only in the order of 0.5 to cm. Accordingly, it is possible for wind to blow under the wooden window frame and up past the rebate. If there is rain coupled with the wind, then the rain will fall onto the S sill and be blown up over the whole rebate and into the 8082 building. The present invention proposes a bead which extends across the lower part of the frame to increase the g088 0. water head height of the rebate to inhibit water and/or wind 0 0 passing under the bottom of the window and over the rebate.
In accordance with a first broad aspect of the present invention there may be provided a window and frame Ott having a sash weather seal, said frame having a sill with an integral stepped profile in the lower part against which said window can seat said seal including a bead fastened along said sill above said stepped profile, said bead acting, in use, to increase any water head height of the sill itself whereby to provide enhanced weather sealing against ingress of wind and/or water passing under the bottom of the window.
Most preferably the window is of the swing-out type, i.e. awning or casement type windows.
It is preferred that the window have a chain winder to permit it to swing in or out. Most preferably the chain winder is fastened directly to the sill, and preferably the chain of said chain winder leaves and enters said chain winder at a distance above said sill.

wi ~~I_41YILILII*-*~II_1_X- il.lCf~~~LIY 4 It is also preferred that there be similar beads up each side of the frame.
It is preferable for the bead to have a seal therein which, in use, abuts with said window and said frame whereby to provide enhanced sealing against the ingress of weather.
In order that the invention can be more clearly ascertained, examples of preferred embodiments will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, 10 wherein: Figure 1 is a rear or internal perspective view of a wooden frame swing-out type window wherein a fly screen therefor has been removed; Figure 2 is a sectional view along section line 2-2 of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a sectional view along section line 3-3 of Figure 1; Figure 4 shows the mortice and tennon arrangement of a sill of the window shown in Figure 1; and Figure 5 is a close-up transverse sectional view of bead used with the window of Figures 1 to 4.
Referring to all of the fi.ures it can be seen that the window has a frame 1 as of wood. The frame has 25 a frame head 3, frame sides 5 and a lower part of the frame or sill 7. The head 3 has notched cut-outs 9 therein in which corresponding machined tongues 11 on the frame sides can locate. The sill 7 is fastened to the sides by a mortice and tennon joint which is shown in 30 detail in Figure 4. Here it can be seen that a tongue 13 is machined at each side edge of the sill 7. A corresponding cut-out 15 is provided in the sides 5. The mortice and tennon arrangement of the sill 7 relative to the sides 5 provides enhanced weather sealing compared to a simple butt arrangement of the sill against the sides 5 By referring to Figure 3 it can be seen that each of the sides 5 have a stepped cross-sectional shape.
The step provides a jamb stop 17 along the sides. By referring to Figure 2 it can be seen that the sill 7 has i 5 a similar stepped cross-sectional profile but has a downwardly inclined sill face 19 and a jamb stop portion 21. The head 3 has a generally rectangular configuration but with a channel 23 therein. The channel 23 provides a form of a jamb stop 25 on the head 3 plus an outwardly directed weather sealing lip 27.
The window 29 of the window frame has a peripheral rectangular shaped frame 31 of known configuration. A glazing panel 33 is fitted within the frame 31 in a known manner. The window 29 is of the swing-out type and known hinges and stays are provided on the sides 5 near the head 3 to permit the window 29 to o swing in this manner. The hinges have not bepn shown.
By viewing Figure 2 it can be seen that the height of the jamb stop 21 on the sill 7 is quite small, @0 09 0 20 and that the sill face 19 slopes upwardly towards the jamb stop 21. Wind can blow under the window 29, in a 900Q o° 4conventional window, and up over the jamb stop 21. Water o4 can collect on the sill face 19 and be blown under the window and up over the jamb stop 2] and into a building.
S 0A 25 The present invention proposes a bead 35 which *o09 is fastened along a lower part of the frame the sill 7 o such as on top of a jamb stop 21.
o It should be observed that the window 29 is able to swing in and out by use of a chain winding mechanism 37. The chain 39 thereof is, in this embodiment, elevated above the upper surface of the jamb stop 21 on the sill 7. This is in contrast to known chain winding mechanisms 31 where the chain 39 is at the base of the chain winding mechanism 37. Thus, in the embodiment proposed herein, the bead 35 can extend continuously from one side 5 to the other side 5 under 6 the chain 39. Further beads 41 (see Figure 1 and Figure 3) are fastened to each of the jambs 17 of the sides The beads 41 are of the same cross-sectional shape and same material as the bead 35. Preferably the beads and 41 are made of the same wooden material as that of the frame i. The beads 35 and 41 are positioned at the edge of the jamb stop 21 and jamb 17.
Figure 5 shows the profile of the jambs 35 and 41. It can be seen that it provides a double step 43 facing towards the jamb stop 21 and jamb 17 and towards the window frame 31. A weather seal of suitable material such as a synthetic sealing material can be provided within the double step 43. The seal 45 is preferably a seal known as AQUAMAC which is a foam seal supplied by Schlegel of 44-48 Riverside Road, Chipping Norton, Sydney, 2170, Australia. In use, the seal is o caused to compress slightly when abutted by the frame 31 r oand hence enhanced sealing can be effected.
As shown in Figure 2 the seal 45 engages with 0o *0 20 the frame 31 of the window 29 and hence acts with the bead 35 to inhibit the passing of wind and/or water. The *000 oo use of the bead 35 increase the water head height of the Od o jamb stop 21. It does not require an unnecessary large 0 volume of timber from which the sill 7 can be made if the 25 bead 35 were made integral with the sill 7. In other words, it would be possible to provide a bead 35 formed integrally on a sill 7 to have the same head height as *0 *0 now provided but that would entail use of substantially greater thickness of timber for the sill 7. Such usage is considered wasteful of natural resources. The use of the bead 35 on the sill 7 permits enhanced water head height to be provided without unnecessary wastage of raw materials. The seal 45 provides enhanced sealing of the window 29 within the frame i.
7 Each of the beads 41 extend from the sill 7 to the head 5. Thus there is continuous sealing along the bottom of the window 29 and up the sides. The top of the window 29 can be sealed by providing seal material 46 which can be squeeze fitted in a groove 48 machined in the channel 23. The seal 46 can extend across the width of the window 29 between the sides 5. As the window 29 is opened and closed the seal can be made to squash to provide for enhanced sealing.
Figures 2 and 3 show a fly screen 47 fitted to the window frame 1 internally of the building of hich the frame 1 is placed. The fly screen 47 is of known fly screen construction, as of aluminium frame with suitable fly screen material extending across the frame. The fly screen is held retained relative to the window 29 by locating over the chain winder 37 and behind a pin 49 fastened in the head 3. In use, the fly screen can be removed by pulling downwardly on a tab 51 which permits the top of the fly screen 47 to pass underneath the head of the pin 49 and swing outwardly to enable removal. The lower portion of the fly screen 47 has an aluminium cover strip member 53 fastened thereto. The cover strip member 53 is provided with a cut-out 55 to enable it to pass over the chain 39 and the winder 37. The depth of the cover strip 53 can be maintained the same or substantially the same as that in known fly screens which co-operate with chain winders 37 and similarly the cut-out 55 can be of the substantially same depth as known cut-outs in fly screens despite the fact that the chain 39 is positioned upwardly from the bottom of the chain winder 37. This occurs because the bottom of the cover strip 53 can now locate on the top of the bead It should be appreciated that with the embodiment disclosed substantial improvements in the weather sealing capabilities of a swing-out type window have been provided. It should also be appreciated that 8 -8the window is made from timber which is a known and accepted building material suitable for use in windows but this does not exclude the invention being implemented in other suitable materials.
Modifications may be made to the invention as would be apparent to persons skilled in the window arts.
These and other modifications may be made without departing from the ambit of the invention, the nature of which is to be determined from the foregoing description.
