I 4699/713-L 'Printed by 0.1.TiiomrNN, Commonwealth Government Printer, Canbera Patent Attorneys 71 Queens Road, Melbourne, Victoria, 3004, Australia -2- This invention relates to a paving system and relates particularly to improvements in paving, or stepping blocks or stepping stones, edging for lawns and gardens, mower strips and the like.
It is known to form paving, or stepping stones, utilizing relatively large stones, flags or timber secions which are placed on the ground in the desired location. When using such timber sections, slices taken from trees of between 2 and 10 cm. thickness are commonnly used. Such timber slices are generally taken from trees having a trunk diameter of from 30 to 60 cm. Such timber sections, or other "stepping stones', are relatively difficult to place in position, particularly if a continuous line of such 10 sections is to be formed.
It is often desirable to provide an edging or mower strip along the edges of lawns and gardens. Such edging may be formed in situ using concrete or the like or *4 may be formed of bricks or other paving materials. Edging formed in this way is relatively expensive and is difficult to locate in position.
It is, therefore, desirable to provide an improved paving system or edging which is economical to produce and is siml.le to locate in position.
It is also desirable to provide an edging material or mower strip material which can conform to any desired shape and which is aesthetically pleasing.
According to one aspect of this invention there is provided a garden edging or 20 mower strip comprising a plurality of discrete timber sections having substantially parallel upper and lower surfaces and edges extending downwardly from the upper surfaces to the lower surfaces, the sections being arranged in edge-to-edge relationship to form a continuous line of sections and interconnected by an elongate member which is attached to the lower surfaces of the sections in such a manner a, to allow it to bend in a transverse direction relative to its longitudinal axis and parallel to the lower surfaces of the sections so as to enable the continuJus line of sections to conform to curved shapes.
j0 According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a garden edging or mower strip comprising a plurality of discrete timber sections each of which has substantially parallel upper and lower surfaces each having a longitudinal dimension of one size and a transverse dimension of similar or lesser size, the sections having edges extending downwardly from the upper surfaces to the lower surfaces, and the -v^ sections being interconnected by an elongate member which extends in the direction of the longitud'inal dimension of each section and which is attached to the lower surface of each section to interconnect the sections in edge-to-edge relationship to form a continuous line of sections.
Preferably, the at least one elongated member comprises a wire which is attached to each timber section by one or more staples.
It is also preferred that the staples or the like attaching the member to each timber section do not 0
S
er 0 4 0S 0S 0 0000 00 00 0 *0 0 6 00 r~ V 0 1-zn immovably fasten the timber sections to the member but allow some longitudinal movement to permit the edging or mower strip to be curved to any desired shape.
The preferred circular timber sections may have a diameter of about 130 mm. and a thickness of between and 60 mm., preferably about 45 mm. The edging or mower strip is manufactured in suitable lengths with the timber sections attached to the wire so that the sections are either just touching or are closely spaced along the wire. The edging or mower strip may be made in lengths of one metre or more for ease of handling and use.
In order that the invention will be more readily understood, an embodiment thereof will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing wherein: S 15 Fic re 1 shows a mower strip in accordance with ethe prese invention, and Figure 2 is an underneath view of the mower strip 0 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings there is illustrated 0 20 a mower strip, or garden edging, which comprises a plurality of substantially similar, discrete timber sections 12 each having a diameter of about ;30 mm, The els.e' timber sections 12 are assembled in edge-to-edge ;elationship to form a substantially continuous line of sections.
25 A single wire 14 is connected to the lowermost 10:04 surface 16 of each timber section 12 by means of a pair 0 S of staples 17. The staples 17 pass around the wire 14 and into the timber sections 12 adjacent the centre thereof. By placing the staples 17 adjacent the centre.
of the timber sections 12, the edging or mower strip so formed may be curved to conform with any desired shape.
The staples 17 are sufficiently loose around the wire 14 as to permit some longitudinal movement of the timber sections 12 relative to the wire 14. This further assists in enabling the edging or mower strip to assume a desired configuration when in use.
The timber sections 12 preferably have a thickness of between 20 and 60 mm., the preferred thickness being between 40 and 50 mm. The edging or mower strip may be formed in lengths of one metre or more with, for example, from six to ten timber sections in each length which facilitates ease of use.
In use, a number of lengths of the edging or mower strip are laid end-to-end along a garden or lawn border, or along a driveway or the like. The edging or mower strip may be laid in a narrow trench having a depth approximately equal to the thickness of the timber sections 12. When in position, the spaces between and adjacent the timber sections is filled with soil or the like so that the upper surface 18 of the timber sections 12 forms a substantially continuous, firm edging.
It will be appreciated that more than one wire 15 strand may be used in assembling the timber sections 12 tgether. Other material may also be used in assembling the discrete timber sections 12 to a line suitable for
S
forming the edging or mower strip of the invention.
It will also be appreciated that a garden edging 20 or mower strip in accordance with the invention may be formed using a plurality of longitudinally extending t -nber sections and additional laterally spaced sections which form substantially wider edging or mower strip. With such an arrangement, the laterally spaced timber sections may be secured to the longitudinally extending sections either by a wire strand or mesh or by other suitable means preferably attached to the lower surfaces of the timber sections.
While the invention has been described using substantially circular timber sections, it will also be understood that sections of other shapes may be used, as desired, in forming a garden edging or mower strip in accordance with the present invention.
In a modification of the invention, the timber sections 12 are interconnected by an elongated member of synthetic plastic material which is adhered, stapled or "welded" to the lower surfaces of the adjacent timber sections. Such synthetic plastic elongated material may I I

comprise or or more strands of plastics material or a mesh or the like.
In a further embodiment, a garden edging or mower strip is formed with the plurality of timber sections 12 having substantially centrally located blind holes formed into the lower surfaces thereof, and the elongated member consists of a preformed plastics strip having a plurality of upstanding pegs or projections which engage the holes to thus form an assembly of the timber sections on the plastic strip.
