Description
i i i 1 COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRAL 4 "6 Patents Act 1952 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION (Original) FOR OFFICE USE Application Number: PJ0640 Lodged: 27/09/88 Complete Specification Lodged: Accepted: Published: Class Int. Class o a SPriority: Related Art: C C 13-689 TO BE COMPLETED BY APPLICANT Name of Applicant: Address of Applicant: MILAN EDGAR BOSICH 4 Esk Road, City Beach, in the State of Western Australia, Commonwealth of Australia.
MILAN EDGAR BOSICH 5 ,,1 Actual Inventor: Address for Service:o a Wray Associates Primary Industry House 239 Adelaide Terrace Perth Western Australia 6000.
Complete Specification for the invention entitled: "DISC OF A DISC BRAKE ASSEMBLY" The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me:i 2-- THIS INVENTION relates to disc brake assemblies and in particular the construction of the discs for such assemblies.
In one form the invention resides in a disc assembly of a disc brake, said assembly comprising a support ring, a plurality of part annular segments which together form a disc element, said segments supported at one edge by said support ring, the free edge of the segments being engagable with a support for said disc, and the length of each segment being such that when in position the opposed ends of at least two segments are spaced from each other.
According to a preferred feature of the invention, at least one segment is fixed to the support ring to prevent S relative angular displacement therebetween.
S The invention will be more fully understood in light of the following description of one specific embodiment. The S description is made with reference to the accompanying drawing of which; Figure 1 is a side elevation of a disc according to the embodiment; Figure 2 is a cross sectional view along li.ie A-A of Figure 1; Figure 3 is an exploded view of a disc according to the embodiment; and 0 Ij -3- The embodiment is directed to a brake shoe which is intended for use in a brake assembly of the form disclosed in Australian Patent Application No. PI8544.
The brake shoe comprises a support ring 11 which is formed on its outer edge with a continuous groove 12. The brake shoe further comprises a set of four part annular segments 13 which together define an annulus. The inner edge of each segment Ls shaped to be snugly received within the groove 12 formed in the outer edge of the support ring 11.
The length of each part annulus segment is such that when supporting engagement with the annular ring 11 the opposed end 14 of adjacent segments are spaced from each other. The outer edge of the segments 13 are formed with SU a series of teeth which are intended to be engagable with a splined support such that the disc is capable of axial movement within the support but it is angularly fixed in relation to the support. The axial faces of each segment 13 is lined with a suitable friction enhancing material In order to prevent angular displacement of the segments 13 around the periphery of the support ring 11 at least one of the segments is formed with an aperture in the portion which is receivable within the groove of the S support ring 11 which can be aligned with a correspondingly shaped aperture 16 formed axially through the annular ring 11 whereby a locking pin is engagable through the annular ring and the segment to prevent angular displacement of the segment on the support ring I: 11.
As a result of the construction of the brake shoe according to the embodiment any expansion of the segments 13 as a result of heat generated during operation of the 4 brake assembly with which the brake shoe is associated will be accommodated by the spacing provided between the end faces of the annular segments 13.
It should be appreciated that the scope of the present invention need not be limited to the particular scope of the embodiment described above and in particular need not be restricted to an arrangement which the annular ring is located innermost. The invention is also applicable to the construction of the discs of a brake assembly in which the support ring is located outermost and to an oQ arrangement in which the support ring is central and the 0 two sets of segments are supported to each side of the S ring.
