Description

r 618355 COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA PATENTS ACT 1952-69 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION
(ORIGINAL)
Class I t, Class Application Number: PI 8324 Lodged; 19th May 1988 Complete Specification Lodged; a Accepted: Published: Priority: Related Art: Name of Applicant,.
Address of Applicant: Actual inventor: Address for Service HU-MEI2AL ENGINEERING PTY. LTD, 33 Trawalla AVenue, Thomastown Victoria 3074, Australia KENNETI-1 MICHAEL HUjME EDWD. WATERS SONS, 50 QUEEN STR'.EET, MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA, 3000, Complete Specification for the Invention entitled: IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO PLATE BENDING The following statement Is a full description of this Invention, Including the best method of performing It known to -2- IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO PLATE BENDING The present invention relates to a plate bending or curving process and a plate bent or curved in accordance with that process for use to form part of a tubular section, and apparatus therefor.
Currently there are problems in the bending and formation of extremely thick plate. Present methods experience difficulty in achieving good edge setting and the formation of a uniform radius of curvature in the plate where the plate thickness exceeds 100 mm.
Furthermore, it is difficult if not impossible to bend long lengths of thick plate without the use of to expensive equipment and edge setting must be achieved as a separate process.
I15 The present invention has aimed at achieving a uniform radius of curvature of plate bent into circular segments enabling the formation of tubular components having a relatively low diameter to plate thickness ratio of as low as 5 with good edge setting.
There are problems in prior art equipment using conventional forming techniques in having adequate edge setting of the curved plate and furthermore conventional presses require extremely high powers where the plate thickness exceeds 100 mm.
Furthermore, conventional equipment requires operation by skilled operators and furthermore preparation of the bent plate for welding results in wasted material and labour intensive operations.
S* 0 The present invention seeks to achieve a uniform J 30 radius of curvature with very good edge setting allowing pre-machining of the edges prior to bending.
Thus, the present invention allows accurate formation of pipes with the use of relatively unskilled labour and yet the pipes may have an extremely low thickness to diameter ratio.
The present invention also lInds itself to bending of pipes of relatively long lengths of up to 10 metres.
*8 3 The present invention provides a method of curving a plate in which a turning moment or couple is applied to the edge of a plate against a pivotably mounted curved mandrel including a gripper for engaging the edge of the plate fed thereinto, comprising the step of applying a substantially linear force to the mandrel in a direction substantially perpendicular to the direction of feed of the plate at a predetermined lateral distance from the grip edge of the plate so that the mandrel is moved around its pivot point to cause the plate to follow the curvature of the mandrel and form a curved plate.
2There is also provided apparatus for carrying out the method including a curved mandrel and a gripper on the to Io mandrel for gripping the edge portion of a plate to be bent or curved by the mandrel, wherein the mandrel is curved to form substantially part of a circle to which the plate to be bent or curved is to conform, wherein a force is adapted to be applied to said mandrel laterally spaced from said gripper, the arrangement being such that in use the plate moves laterally with the mandrel and the gripper to force the plate to conform with the curvature of the mandrel to *form a bent or curved plate.
The force is applied linearly and creates a rolling force on the mandrel which creates movement of the plate laterally of said linear force.
A plate when made by the method and apparatus is also claimed, The invention will be described in greater detail, having reference to the accompanying sketches which show in schematic form the construction and operation of the Smachinery to carry out the process.
Figure 1 refers to the press in the starting position and Figure 2 shows the press with one half of the plate bent.
A1 E- i 3a The machinery includes a platen 10 upon which is mounted a slideable base 11 roller mounted with rollers 12, a plate 13 of given thickness and width dimension is mounted on the slideable base 11 and gripped in a gripper 15 secured to pivotal arm 16.
The pivotal arm 16 includes a semicircular mandrel 17 and adapted to pivot about the cross-head portion 18 to t4 0 *t 0 04 4 which the plunger of a press 20 is connected. The line of force of ".he press 20 depicted by arrow FI is arranged to be offset from the gripper position by a distance H representing an angle of approximately 150 for arm 16 connected to the gripper Application of force Fl downwards Causes a turning moment on the gripper and mandrel 15, 17 to cause the plate 13 to roll on rollers 12 to the right to the position shown in Figure 2.
The plate is then released and the opposite side or edge of the plate is inserted in the grinper in similar fashion as depicted in figure 1 and the process is repeated.
The method is suitable for forming segments of a circle of up to 1800 by gripping each plate edge 15 alternatively and turning the plate through an angle in excess of 90° to allow for springback of the plate and to ultimately result in a semicircular plate.
The process does not require any turning of the mandrel by an outside force, the mandrel is turned as a result of the turning moment applied to the gripper through o its displacement laterally from the line of force of the 9 9 press.
Greater power is obtained by the process of the 4 invention since it applies a moment to the plate edge rather than a force to the plate edge as occurs in conventional pl';:e pressing.
°9 The pressure force on the plate obtained thereby is at least double that which can be achieved from the same force applied in a conventional press. Furthermore, the conventional press is incapable of bending the plate at near the edge of the plate, thereby leaving a relatively poor edge set which in most cases must be removed prior to joining of the curved plate to form a tubular construction.
In the present invention the edge set is very small, being less than the thickness of the plate and therefore premachining of the edges of the.plate with the present -q'
L
invention is possible and this together with the uniform radius of curvature imparted by the part cylindrical mandrel lends itself to accurate formation of the pipes and yet utilising relatively unskilled labour.
With such fabrication, preparation for welding of the edges is often difficult, whereas with the present invention pre-machining of the edges makes the overall task far simpler.
