Complete specification for the invention entitled: "PORTABLE WATER HEATER" The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to us -1- I L Li 'A ^IIIYI L ~r
I
la- "PORTABLE WATER HEATER" This invention relates generally to portable heaters for liquids and more particularly, though not exclusively, to a portable water heater which is suitable for use in camping and similar applications.
There is a need when camping to have a ready supply of hot water.
Prior to the present invention, water was heated as required in kettles and the like.
According to the present inventiori there is provided a portable heater for liquids comprising: a storage vessel in which the liquid is contained; heat exchange means connected to allow for liquid communication with said storage vessel such that in use liquid in the vessel can be passed through said heat exchange means and returned to said storage vessel; a carriage to which said heat exchange means is mounted, said carriage being operatively connected to said vessel and being capable of adopting an operative position in which said heat exchange means can be heated by a heat source such that, in use, liquid passing through the heat exchange means is heated and returned to said storage vessel as a result of thermosypnon effect 20 and wherein said carriage is movable between said operative position and a stored position in which said carriage and said heat exchange means are disposed immediately adjacent one side of said vessel.
Preferably, the heat exchange means comprises a heating section and a coupling section which operatively connects the heating section of the heat exchange means to the storage vessel, the arrangement being such that when Ssaid carriage is in said operative position, said heating section of said heat exchange means is disposed to one side of said vessel in spaced relation therefrom.
Preferably, the carriage is operatively connected to the vessel by hinge means.
Preferably the heating section of said heat exchange means comprises a P.LLv tubular coil having two ends which are in fluid communication with the vessel 911016,cmsdat.132,1551.rsj u -2via connector tubes which include flexible tube sections.
The portable heater of the present invention may further include a shield member which is disposed between a heating section of said heat exchange means and said carriage are in the operative position.
An aperture may be provided in the carriage between the shield member and the vessel this aperture being arranged to form an air curtain between the heating section of the heat exchange means and the vessel.
A stand may be provided for supporting the vessel on a surface and the carriage is disposed above the surface when in the operative position such that a heat source can be disposed underneath the carriage.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will hereinafter be described "with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:- Figure 1 is a schematic perspective view of a portable heater according to the present invention with the carriage and heat exchange means in the 15 stored position; Figure 2 is a similar view to that of Figure 1 but is partially cut away and the carriage and heat exchange means are shown in the operative position.
Referring to the drawings, the portable heater generally indicated at 1 comprises a storage vessel 3 for containing the liquid which is to be heated and is subsequently heated. The storage vessel 3 comprises an inner container 4 and an insulated outer container 5. Preferably the inner cor.amner 4 is formed of plastics material preferably PVC and the outer containe; is formed of steel.

A filling port 6 is provided in the top of the storage vessel 3 the filling port 6 being closed by a cap 7. A handle 8 is provided in the top wall of the vessel to enable ease of carriage of the portable heater. A dispensing tap 9 is provided in a lower portion of one of the walls of the vessel through which the heated liquid can be dispensed.
As shown, a support stand 10 is provided upon which the vessel can rest when in use. The support stand 10 comprises foldable legs 11 which when the heater is being transported it can be folded into a position as shown in Figure 1. An overflow pipe 12 can be provided in a side wall of the vessel.
The heater further includes a heat exchange means 14 comprising a heating section 16 and a coupling section 18 through which liquid passes from the vessel 3 to the heating section 16 of the heat exchange means 14. The heating section 16 comprises a tubular coil 17 preferably made of copper and the coupling section 18 comprises flexible tubes 19 and rigid tubes 20. A flame deflecting plate 15 may be provided in the top of the coil 17.
The heat exchange means of the heater 1 is mounted to a carriage 25. The carriage 25 includes a first part 26 to which the heating section 16 of the heat exchange means 14 is mounted and a second part 27 which spaces the first par 25 from the vessel and operatively connects the carriage to the vessel. A hinge 28 operatively connects the carriage to the vessel 3 and allows movement of the carriage from an operative position (as shown in Figure 2) to a stored position (as shown in Figure As can be readily seen in Figure 2, when the carriage is in the operative position the heating section 16 of the heat exchange means 14 is spaced from the vessel and disposed in spaced relation above the surface upon which the support stand 10 rests. Support links 22 and 23 assist in supporting the carriage 25 when in the operative position. Thus it will be appreciated that when the carriage is in the operative position as shown in Figure 2 it can be placed over a camp fire thereby heating 890317.arsspe.002bowman. ap.

A shield member 30 is provided between the first part 26 of the carriage and the vessel. The shield member includes an upwardly extending plate 31 and a downwardly extending plate 32 when the carriage is in the operative position. An aperture 33 is provided between the shield member 30 and vessel this aperture enabling an air curtain to form thereby further limiting the effects of the heat of the fire directly on the vessel.
Finally it is to be understood that various alterations, modifications and/or additions may be incorporated into the various constructions and arrangements of parts without departing from the spirit and ambit of the invention.
