I I L)ZV! E RRMOVING STJR FIV, THE BOTTOM OR THE SURFACE OF A SETTLING SA,,2IN OR THE LIU The invention refers to a device for removing slurry from the bottom or the surface ofl a settling basin or the li.ke.
PRIOR ART irious devices have becomne known for removing slurry from the bottom or the surface in settling basins. It is for example knownm to remove t,4Lh bottom slurry by means of shield or suction sweepin~g devices. Ith square or elongated settling basins, the sweeping device is longi udinally moved while it is circularly moved in case of circular -2basins. Sweepinag devices or scrapers including a shield displace the slurry on the bottomn to a c~vity from where it is conveyed outside. in case suction removing devices, a nozzle arrangement is moved adjacent the bottom of the basin, and the slurry is conveyed to a channel or a central structure according to the siphon principle.
Various devices for removing floating slurry havq also become known. Usually, suitable removing means are moved along the basin so that the floating slurry can be withdrawn.
It is comiol% to the known devices that they are relatively expensive. Sometimes, less expensive devices are clsired.
In this ccnnection, it has become known to provide slurryremoving pipes by which the slurry can be removed pointwisely, e~g. from square or rectangular slurry funnels.
Such zlurry-removing pipes are not suited for elongated basins or channels since they are not in a position to satisfactorily and uniformly remove the slurry about a greater length. If such a removing pipe is provided with a perforation about its length, the slurry cannot be prevented from flowing the path of lowest resistance so that the slurry flows to the ports most adjacent to the removing mneans. This disadvantage cannot be met by dimensioning the removing port-3 hydraulically. Such a dimerisioriing is obsolete if the miass of slurry varies. The other possibility to dimenslon the removing pipe at a large scale does not lead to success because such dimensioning also results i~n a relatively great expense. Other slurry-removinq syst-mas working with conveyor worms or the like are also expensive.
gflUMRY OF THlr IkE N1IO The object of the invention is to provide a device for removing slurry from -the bottom or the surface of a settling basin which is particularly simply structured and particularly useful for removing slurry from longitudinal basin.9 or channels.
The device according to the invention uses a removing9 pipe which is provided w-ith a suitable arrangement of ports.
The bottom slurry or, alternatively, the floating slurry can be removed by this port arrangement. in order to avoid the disadvantageous effect of a disproportionate removing, /4
I
-4 the invention includes an elongated covering element associated with the removing pipe. Removing pipe and/or elongated covering element are relatively movable, with the port arrangement of the removing pipe and the elongated element being designed such that upon a relative movement of the parts different areas of the port arrangement are effective. By the ment: ned relative movement of removing pipe and elongated element, it is to be achieved that different areas of the port arrangement withdraw slurry while the remaining ports are ineffective because being covered. The mentioned relative movement can be carried out by suitable actuation means which can be selectively operated manually or automatically by suitable driving means.
According to an embodiment of the invention, the elongated element can also be provided with ports which are selected such that upon a relative movement of the port arrangements of the withdrawing pipe and the elongated element different port areas of the removing pipe are exposed to withdraw slurry.
If the removing pipe has a polygornal cross section, it may 5
I-
be sufficient to form the elongated element as a flat strip which is located above the port arrangement in the removing pipe. The elongated strip having a port arrangement, thus, operates as slider which is structured such that upon a displacement with respect to the removing pipe different port arrangements of the removing pipe are effective. According to a further embodiment of the invention, the elongated element may be defined by a tube which encircles the removing pipe, with the relative displacement taking place in axial and/or circumferential direction. The external tube can be moved relative to the internal pipe, both in axial and rotational direction in order to effect the partial suction through the removing pipe. For example, the external or outer tube may be arranged stationarily while the removing pipe may be rotated and/or displaced axially, respectively. The removing pipe may be driven by a shaft attached to an end of the removing pipe. Also a flexible or universal joint shaft may be used selectively to rotate the internal removing pipe.
Alternatively, the internal removing pipe may be stationary while the outer pipe is supported for rotation. To ./6 6 this purpose, for example, a chain gear may be located on the external tube which is drivingly connected with a chain gear above the Level of the basin through a chain.
In case, the external tube is displaced in axial direction and/or also rotated, radial elements can be provided at the outer side of the external tube spaced in longitudinal direction, e.g. paddling or slider sheets or obliquely attached sheets (worm turns) to effect a conveyance of slurry for example to the next port combination.
It is understood that also an automatic actuation can take place for a relative movement of the elongated element and the removing pipe without leaving the principle of the invention.
The structural expense for a device according to the invention is very low. The device according to the invention works reliable and requires no additional maintenance works beyond the usual expense.
According to a further embodiment of the invention, elongated element and removing pipe may consist of separate portions ard may be moved separately. By this, the length 7
A
7 along which a removing of the slurry may take place is unlimited since selective pipe lengths can be kept closed while in other areas slurry can be withdrawn. In the device according to the invention, at each point of the slurry removal a high removing speed is achieved and therefore a corresponding removing capacity. Therefore, the invention is also suited for the removal of heavy slurry contents, e.g. sand. The device according to the invention, for example, can be used for the removing of sand out of socalled collecting means or for the removing of material having a high specific gravity.
The driving of the external tube by chain driving means is mentioned above. Alternatively, two ropes can be turned about the outer and the inner tube, with the other end thereof being connected with wind-up means. By the wind-up means, the tube can be rotated in one direction while by another wind-up means, the second rope may rotate the external tube in the opposite rotational direction. The wind-up means may include a sheave. Alternatively, pulling means can be provided, with levers, hydraulic cylinders or similar means serving for a rectilinear movement.

1-j T 8 The device according to the invention allows the removing of slurry from the bottom or the surface, respectively, substantially along a line. The width of the removal depends substantially upon the diameter of the removing ports. According to a further embodiment of the invention, the removing pipe may be moved or pivoted transverse to the pipe axis or moved otherwise so that a larger bottom surface may be swept. A similar effect is obtained if a normally stationary removing pipe is rotated about a predetermined angli so that a suction effect is not only obtained directly below the removing pipe, rather, also in adjacent areas. By this, the removing surface may be enlarged.
The ".invention will be explained in more detail along accompanying drawings.

A liquid 12. to be clarified having a level 1.2 is within a diagrammnatically shown settling basin 10 of rectangular or square cross section. A slurry removing device 14 includes a removing pipe 2.5 which is encircled by an outer tube 16.
The outer tube 16 extends beyond the right-hand wall of the basin and extends vertically upwardly through a bend as shown at 17, a telescopically displaceable sleeve 18 TI being slided on the upper end of portion 1.7. An extension 19 of tube 16 beyond portion 17 and coaxial with tube 16 is closed by a flange 20. A shaft 21 is connected to the associated end of removing pipe 15 through a suitable connection means 22, Shaft 21 extends sealingly through flange and is connected for example with a hand wheel 23.
As pan be seen, removing pipe 15 is rotatably supported by the outer tube 16, Pipe 15 can be rotated a predetermined amnount by means of shaft 21 and wheel 23, respectively. it is understood that this rotation can be made by suitable driving means.
Rlemoving pipe 15 is provi.ded with removing openings or ports 24 which are helically arranged In longitudinal direction. Outer tube 16 has a rectilinear arrangement 6 IL 11 of ports 25. If removing pipe 15 is rotated about a predetermined angle, different areas of ports 24 are aligned with ports 25 so that different port areas remove slurry from the bottom of basin 10 in accordance with the angular position of removing pipe 15 as for example can be seen at 26.
A device 30 approximately similar to device 15 serves for the romoviag of floating slurry Just below level 12. Parts similar to device 14 are provided with the same reference nunbers provided with a comma. Contrary to device 1.4, the ports 25' of outer tube 16' are directed upwardly in order to remove floating slurry by areas of r-emcving pipe 15 as shown at 31.
The embodiment of Fig, 2 is substantially similar to that of Fig, 1. An outer tube 16a and a removing pipe 15a are located in a basin 10a. The outer tube is stationary while the inner tube 15a is supported for rotation in outer tube 16a. In this case, the removing pipe 15a can be rotated by flexible or universal joint shaft 33. If inner pipe extends beyond the outer pipeo it may be rotated through a chain or a rope (Fig. ij ,/12 Tn thn exbgdiMent Of Fig. 3( a basin l017 is shown filled with liquid lib to be clarified up to level 12b. An inner removing pipe 15b ie stationarily located In the proximity of basin 10b and has ports 25b at the lower side. The tube is sealingly extended to the right wall of basin 10b and upwardly to a suitible collecting means outside of basin l0b. A gate valve 34 or the like is connected to the outer portion 17b. An outer tube 16b is aupport.ed by removing pipe 15b for rotation and includes a helic:.ally extending row of ports 24b. A chain gear 35 is located at the righthand end of outer tube 16b and Is In driving connection with a chain gear 37 through a chain 36. Chain gear 37 is rotatably supported by a bracket 39 on the basin edge through a shaft 38. If shaft 38 is rotated, outer tube 16b is rotated relative to the Inner tube 15b in oArto parti.ally remove slurry from the bd-rto a* shown at 26b.
The function is similar to that of the device according to Fig. 1.
The emrbodimient of Fig. 4 resembles that of Fig. 3, Liquid l1c to be clarified is filled into a basin 10~c up to level 12c. A removing pipe 15c has a row of ports 24c at its lower side. Pipe 15c is stationary. An other pipe or tube T-0A( 1 j3 16C is displaceably supported by removing pipe 15c and has also a row of ports 25c at the lower nide. A linkage 40 is connec;ted to outer pipe 16c, with the uipper portion. thereof being guided vertically as indicated by double arrow 41 in order to displace outer tube 16c in axial direction, By this, different ports 24c, 25c can be brought into align, ment in order to partially remove slurry along the extension of removing pipe 15c. Radial scraper elements 42 are attached to the lower side of outer tube 16c which effect a transport of the slurry upon an axial disrilacement of outer tube 16c.
Fig. 5 shows a crosri section through a trapezoidal and downwardly narrowing slurry channel 50 of a uettling ba,,;ini wherein the slurry deposits. A sliurry-removing device 51 can be located adjacent to the bottom oZ channel 0 which for example may be similar to device 14 in Fig. I or device 141) in Fig. 3 in order to remove the slurry from the bottom.
In the embodiment of Fig. 6, a slurry channel 52 of triangular cross secti~on is provided -at the bott n of a basin 1 4 not shown in detail. As can be seen, a device for removing slurry is embedded in the wa2'.ls forming chzinnel 52; the device may be similar to tha,. of F'ig. 1, In the case illustrated, it is necessary that the outer tube is stationary while the removing pipe is movable in order to remove slurry from above as shown at 54.
Fig. 7 shows a settlinq basin 10d filled with water lid up to level 12d, A pipe arrangement 14d as for exam le is illuastrated in Figs. 1 to 4 Is connected with a rope 16 on diametrically opposing sides which is led in a loop extending in a vertical plane by deflection pul3.~ys 61, 62, 63, 64, Deflr.tion pulley 62 can be driven by a motor or can be provided with a crank, respectively, in to move rope 60. By this, the pipe arrangement 14d can be osziliated as indicate~d by double arrow 65 so that slurry can be remov;ed from the bottom of basin lod about a larger surface. The inner tube or pipe of pipe arrangement 14d not designated is connected with a flexible hose 66 or the like which in turn is connected with a stationary conduit 67 introduced into basin 10Od. The pipe arrangement 14d is rigidly connected with a frame 67 shown by dotted lines
~J
which for example enables a pivoting movement of pipe arrangement 14d. Also a Carriage can be provided for hor'zontal reciprocating movement as indicated by double ar:ocw 68 in order to achieve a similar effect as by rope Fig. 8 illustrates an alternative embodiment for a rotational driving the outer tube (see Fig. In Fig. 8, only outer tube 1.6e is shown, that is twice for iLllustration purposes. A first rope 70 is attached to pipe l6e at 71 and wound around pipe 16e in, clockwise direction.
The other end of rope 70 is connected to a pulley 72. If pulley 72 is rotated in clockwise direction, rope 1.0 is unwound from pipe 16e which is rotated in clockwis,,e direction. A further rope 73 is attached to pipe 169 at 74 and attached to the pulley 25 with its other and. if pull 75 is rotated in opposite direction as pulley 72, the roation of outer tube 1.6e effected by pulley 72 is reversed. Therefore 1 a simpla mechanical rotation of the outer tube 16e tkes place by means of pulleys 70, 73. The ce~cribed rotating mechanism is free of wear and raquire8 no0 maintenance.
~"TO
-16 In Fig. 9, a Pipe arrangement 14f is shown which is siinilar to the pipe arrangement illustrated in Figs. I. to 4.
Therefore, It appears nlot necessary to give a detailed explanation. It is merely to be pointed out that the coiapiete pipe arrangerr!!nt can be rotated from a position shown in the center of fig. 9 at 80 to the left and the right side about a limitLed angle in order to remove slurry from lateral as shown at Pi and 82, respectively. By this, the removing surface on the bottom -of the basin can be e n a r ged..
