The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to us:- 1 1 -MM.&d0a L %J4 A CPL U I= W G441 6~ To: The Commissioner of Patents.
ii f-asp K 44 I r e This invention relates to small diameter communication cables, and in particular to communication cables intended for use with frequencies up to and including the MHz region.
Typically such cables have at least two electric conductors and an outer sheath.
It has been shown that conventional field cable of the aforementioned type can exhibit an increase in attenuation of more than 100% at a frequency of 1.024 MHz when exposed o to light rain.
10 It is an object of the present invention to provide a o 0 communication cable of the aforementioned type which is 0r electrically insensitive to moisture whereby the attenuation 4000 of frequencies in the MHz region remains low and substantially constant when the cable is exposed to wet weather.
000 °According to the invention there is provided a small 0 0* 00B diameter high frequency communication cable, including at least two electric conductors surrounded by a sheath element, wherein said sheath element comprises an arrangement of a non-conducting internal layer, a non-conducting ex- 0* s0 ternal layer and an intermediate layer of partially conductive material.
In order that the invention may be readily carried into effect, an embodiment thereof will now be described in relation to the drawing whose figure shows a section of a communication cable formed according to the invention.
Referring to the drawing, the communication cable comprises two similar separate electric conductors 12, each consisting of a polyethylene insulated tinned copper wire 14. Moreover, the cable also comprises two tension relief elements 16, consisting of a polyethylene insulated stain- S2 j.
ji _kless steel wire 18. The two insulated conductors 12 and the two insulated steel wires 16 are twisted into a compact quad in a known manner. The wires 16 and the conductors 12 are surrounded by a sheath which has been extruded around the whole quad.
As is apparent from the Fig. of the drawing the sheath is composed of three different mutually combined layers.
o. The layers consist of plastic, preferably polyethylene. The o internal layer 20 and the external layer 22 are non- 0 conducting but the intermediate layer 24 is partially conducting.
The assembly has been made by melting the three layers together but, of course, the use of glue or some other assembly method is envisaged.
The internal layer 20 of polyethylene can have a low *o density, whilst the external layer 22 shall consist of a durable plastic with a high density or another durable plaso tic, such as polyamide. The intermediate layer 24 should have a volume resistivity suitable for the line attenuation msa oo .20 level, preferably of the magnitude 10 2 ohm cm, at a tempera ,0 ature of 20°. For the purpose intended it is suitable that the internal layer 20 is between four and six times thicker than the intermediate layer 24.
It should be noticed that the sheath on the whole must be proportionately thin, preferably about 0.6 mm, in which case the intermediate layer 24 should have a thickness 0.10 mm.
A communication cable of the kind stated above which has an external diameter of nominally 4.7 mm, gives a line I- attenuation of 12.8 +0.5 dB/km at the temperature 20 0 C, irrespective of the outer weather conditions.
While the present invention has been described with regard to many particulars, it is understood that equivalents may be readily substituted without departing from the scope of the invention.
