S MAUREEN JULIA WHITING and CONSTANCE ALICE BRISKEY GRANT ADAMS COMPANY, Patent Trade Mark Attorneys, Level 9 NATIONAL MUTUAL CENTRE 144 Edward Street, BRISBANE. QUEENSLAND. 4000
AUSTRALIA.
ION FOR THE INVENTION ENTITLED:
S
0 COMPLETE SPECIFICAT: "IMPROVEMENTS IN BEDDING" The following statement is a full description of the invention including the best method of performing it known to the applicant.
_i THIS INVENTION relates to improvements in bedding.
Retaining the bed clothes on beds or the like can be a major problem in the following cases: babies in cots or cradles; restless children in beds; geriatric patients in hospitals and nursing homes; and married couples where one partner is accused of "stealing" the bed clothes from the other partner.
In addition, making beds, whether in the home, or in hospitals or other institutions, is found to be a .o chore by most people.
It is an object of the present invention to provide bedding where the top and bottom sheets are retained (or anchored) on the bed.
It is a preferred object to also provide an integral doona cover or quilt.
o 20 It is a further preferred object to provide an integral valance which encloses the bed base.
O Other preferred objects will become apparent 00 from the following description.
In a broad aspect the present invention 25 resides in bed clothes including: a first or bottom sheet which is so arranged (and/or gathered) to be fitted and retained by a bed mattress; and a second or top sheet which is attached to one end the foot end) of the first or bottom sheet and along 10% to 80% of the length of each side of the first or bottom sheet adjacent to the one end of the first or bottom sheet.
Preferably the top sheet is attached to the bottom sheet along 30% to e..
ii 60%, e*#4 preferably 40% to 50% of the length of the two I sides of the bottom sheet.
A shaped blanket or quilt may be placed over i the bed clothes.
A third sheet, or doona cover, may be positioned over the second or top sheet to form a pocket with the second or top sheet to receive a doona.
Preferably the head end of the second or top sheet is folded back over the third sheet or doona cover to cover the mouth of the pocket.
A valance (or skirt) may be attached to the bottom sheet at least along its two sides and the one (or foot) end to cover the bed base when the bed clothes are fitted to a mattress an innerspring mattress) on the bed base.
To enable the invention to be fully understood, a preferred embodiment will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a bed fitted with the bed clothes incorporating the doona cover and valance; and FIG. 2 is a part sectional view corresponding
SII
to FIG. 1.
The bed 10 has a base 11 supported on legs 12, a headboard 13 and a mattress 14. (The mattress 14 may be a foam or innerspring mattress or of other suitable type.) A pillow 15 is covered with a pillow slip 16.
The first, or bottom sheet 17, has a top portion 18 which overlies the mattress 14 and a peripheral side portion 19 which engages the sides and ends of the mattress 18, the side portion 19 being gathered with elastic) under the mattress to retain the bottom sheet 17 on the mattress.
The second, or top sheet 20 has a top portion 21 and side portion 22. The side portion 22 is sewn to 3
A
Q~CtE rl the side portion 19 of the bottom sheet, along the foot end and approximately along 50% of each side, as indicated by the dotted line 23. This forms a "pocket" between the sheets to receive the persons' legs but the top sheet 20 is anchored to the end by the bottom sheet 17.
A doona cover, or quilt 24, overlies the top sheet 20 and it is also sewn to the bottom sheet 17 (and to sheet 20) along the dotted line 23 to secure the three together. A doona 25 is inserted into the "pocket" formed by the top sheet 20 and the doona cover 0 24.
O a To hide the base 11 of the bed, a valance 26 is sewn onto the bottom sheet 17 along the foot end and o o 15 along the two sides.
o .0 In use, the bottom sheet 17 is fitted to the 0 o mattress 14 (and the valance 26 is allowed to drop to hide the base 11). The top sheet 20 and doona cover 24 are pulled up into position after the doona 25 has been inserted in the pocket formed by the top sheet and the 0 doona cover, the top sheet being folded back to cover 0°V" the mouth of the doona cover. If required, a separate quilt or fitted blanket may be laid over the sheets and doona cover.
Because the bottom sheet 17 is anchored on the base, and the top sheet 20 and doona cover 24 are anchored to the bottom sheet at the foot end of the bed and along e.g. 50' of the length of the sides, they are also anchored to the bed and cannot be displaced. As shown in FIG. 1, they can be folded back enough to allow a person to get into, or out of, bed, without difficulty.
When the bed clothes are to be changed, they are stripped from the bed, the doona 25 is removed and the two sheets and doona cover can be washed as a single 4 unit.
In a simpler embodiment not shown, only the bottom and top sheets 17, 20 are used and these may be used in conjunction with or without the valance, and with a fitted blanket (or rug) and/or a quilt cover.
If desired, the two sheets (and doona cover) may be sewn along the dotted line for a given length e.g. 70% of the length of the side of the bed and may be releasably secured e.g. by press-studs or "Velcro" (registered trade mark) strips. If preferred, the top and bottom sheets may be releasably detachable by the r'I: above means and/or buttons if they are to be separated for washing.
The bed clothes can be used in cribs or cradles for babies, for geriatric or like patients in hospitals or nursing homes, or in the family bedroom.
Various changes and modifications may be made to the embodiments described without departing from the scope of the present invention.
