Province SOUTH AFRICA Address for Service is-, PHILLIPS ORMONDE VITZPATRICK Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys 367 Collins Street MELBOUR~NE, Austr~alia 3000 C. mplete Specification tot~ the invention entitled: GRINDING MEDIA (=VZv~ c The following qtatement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it k~nown to applicant(s)? )0 4N1 "GRINDING MEDIA AND METHOD OF GRINDING" THIS INVENTION relates to hard grinding media in tube mills and a method of grinding.
The use of grinding media in the form of hard metal balls in tube mills has been in wide spread use for many years. Usually the balls are produced in a continuous casting operation which leaves an irregularity at the riser which is formed between contiguous balls.
#o00 9 9 '0 S 0 0 0 0 ao 2 I __,II 3 These balls, as is well known, work harden with the impacts which occur during grinding operations. This work hardening gives added life and effectiveness to the grinding media. However the balls are found in practice to wear into irregular shapes because the impact loading encountered during use does not provide uniform hardening of the balls. In particular where there is a flat on the surface of the ball, as may be caused by the formation of a riser as above referred to, this flat forms a soft spot where accentuated wear takes place.
*Once this type of wear takes place the irregular shapes formed results in interlocking which in turn prevents point contact between grinding media and prevents desired work hardening. This results in reduced performance in hardness and grinding efficiency.
It is the object of this invention to provide grinding media, which will at least reduce the disadvantages encountered with grinding balls above referred.
/According to According to this invention there is provided grinding media in the shape of hard metal components of generally circular cylindrical shape with rounded ends, in which the length of the cylindrical section is not less than substantially equal to its diameter.
The present invention also provides a method of grinding material, said method comprising: placing said material in a grinding vessel with grinding media in the shape of hard metal components of generally circular cylindrical shape with rounded ends, in which the length of the cylindrical section is not less than substantially equal to its diameter; and grinding said material with said grinding media.

4 media in the shape metal compionents of Crlyircular cylindricalhap w4th--r-ound-ed- e-nd-s-- Further features of this invention provide for the media to have generally hemispherical ends and a length of cylindrical section approximately the diameter of the cylinder.
It has been found in practice that the exact shape and proportions are not critical to the effectiveness of the media but the general shape defined has been found, for reasons that are presently unknown to the applicant, to result in media which reduces in use more uniformly than media of spherical shape and thus reduce costs or increase mill throughput or grinding efficiency or combinations of these.
The media lends itself to manufacture by known continuous casting processes but can be die cast if necessary.
The application of the media and materials used for its manufacture are substantially identical with that where /balls are balls are used in conventional tube mill operations.
Different milling conditions require different ratios of media to ore being ground, size of media, hardness and other variables. All of these are well known to those skilled in the art.
Similarly the actual composition of the media will be determined by those skilled in the art to give the appropriate grinding media for the particular application.
The invention provides grinding media which have been found to wear in a more uniform manner and maintain for longer than grinding characteristics than conventional balls.
