C
r1 Actual Inventor: Address for Service: Ronald Richard Moore Spruson Ferguson, Patent Attorneys, Level 33 St Martins Tower, 31 Market Street, Sydney, New South Wales, 2000, Australia Complete Specification for the invention entitled: Collapsible Transport Container The following statement is a full descripto)n of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us 5815/2 -rn--rn-A 1 TELESCOPIC LINK FOR A COLLAPSIBLE TRANSPORT CONTAINER The present invention relates to collapsible containers, and more specifically but not exclusively to collapsible containers adapted for stable stacking.
In the transport of horticultural products, it is common to use large storage bins which are preferably collapsible into a reduced volume configuration for more efficient transport whilst empty.
Known collapsible bins are impractical since, when they are in the collapsed configuration, they must be stacked by alternating the orientation of each bin by an angle of 900 in order to have a stable stack. This problem is mainly due to the way the side panels of the bin are folded with respect to the base, whereby the upper surface of the folded container has a smaller dimension than the base in at least one transverse axis thereof. That is, the surface of the side panels do not extend to the outer edges of the base when in the folded position.
It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate the problems and/or disadvantages of the prior art.
In one broad form the present invention provides a collapsible container comprising: a base; a side panel having two side bearers; the side panel connected to the base by two telescopic hinge links, one link extending between and attaching each side bearer and the base; each link having a longitudinal slot formed therein, which slot allows the side panel to both pivot with respect to the base and slide away from the base.
Preferably, the container has four side panels which, in the erected positions, define a rectangular box, and wherein two opposing side panels are slidably moveable, at least said predetermined distance, transversely away from said base, before being pivotable into the folded position.
A preferred form of the present invention will njw be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: KLN:1507b -2- Figure 1 is a schematic exploded perspective view of the container.
Figure 2 is a schematic perspective view of the container of Figure in the erected configuration.
Figure 3 is a schematic perspective view of the container of Figure 1 in the collapsed configuration.
Figure 4 is an enlarged schematic perspective view of the latching mechanism.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of an alternate hinge link.
There is depicted a collapsible container 10 comprising a square or 10 rectangular base 11, four side panels 12, 13, 14, and 15, pivotably mounted to the base 11 along the side edges 11A by hinge means 16. The side panels are pivotable between folded positions generally parallel to the plane of the base 11, and erected positions extending generally normal to the plane of the base.
The base 11 comprises three bearers 17 which are generally parallel and spaced to define the length and width dimensions of the base 11, and which are connected by seven transverse elongate boards 18. The outer bearers 17A are formed at their ends to receive a corner post 19 which is connected, together with a bearer cap 20, by a nut and bolt 21. Vertical side boards 22 are mounted to the corner posts 19 by base corner caps 23.
End plates 24 are also attached proximate the central bearer 17B to each of the side boards 22 and the elongate base boards 18.
The side panels 12, 13, 14 and 15 each have a width which generally corresponds to the length of respective side edges 11A of the base 11 and a height less than half the width so that two opposite side panels can be folded with respect to the base without interfering with each other.
Two side panels 12 and 13 are pivotally mounted to the base 11 by simple bearing plates 25 and pins 26 so as to be pivotable between the i erected position and the folded position laying flat against the boards 18.
The other two side panels 14, 15 are pivotally attached to the base 11 by means of a hinge link 27 which is slidably mounted in the side bearers 28 of the side panels. That is, the hinge link 27 projects longitudinally from the side bearers 28 in a telescopic manner, the distal end of the link 27 being received in a slot 29 in the corner post 19 and secured therein. It should be undersood that in alternate embodiments, the hinge link 27 may be inverted, that is, with the distal end received by the side bearer and slidably mounted in the corner post 19.
KLN:1507b 3 The hinge link 27 is generally elongate with a longitudinal slot and two holes 31.
The two holes 31 are at a portion of the link 27 which is received in the slot 29 of the corner post 19, and are aligned with corresponding holes 32 in the corner posts 19 and secured therein with nuts and bolts.
The longitudinal slot 30 is in a portion of the link 27 which is received in the side bearer 28, and a bearing pin 40 is inserted through a hole 40a in each side bearer 28 and through the slot The link 22 is moveable telescopically between a retracted position and an extended position. When the link 27 is in the retracted position, it is unable to pivot with respect to the side bearer 28. However, when the link 27 is in the extended position it is allowed to pivot about the bearing pin 40 in an aligned slot 33 in the side bearer 28.
As shown in Fig. 5, a link 127 may be attached to the side bearer 28 in a alternate configuration. The link 127 may be welded or integrally formed with a plate 128, which plate is affixed to the side bearer 28.
Screws or other fasteners 129 may be used to affix the plate to the side bearer 28. Similarly the pins 26 may be provided as integral attachments to a pin plate 126. The pin plate 126 may be affixed to the side bearer 28 by screws or other fasteners 129.
In use, the two side panels 14, 15 are initially in the erected position with the links 22 in the retracted position with respect to the side bearers 28 wherein the side panels 14, 15 are unable to pivot. When it is desired to fold the side panels 14, 15, they are first moved away from the base 11, by means of the link 27 being telescopically moved from the retracted position to the extended position. When the links 27 are in the extended position, the side panels 14, 15 are then able to pivot with respect to the base 11, and positioned so as to lie fiat against the previously folded side panels 12, 13. That is, the side panels 14, 15 are parallel to but spaced from the base 11 when in the folded position to allow the other side panels 12, 13 to lie there between.
This arrangement allows the hinge point or pivot point to move or slide, along with the side panel, away from the base.
KLN:1507b
IL-
-4- In this way the bottom edges 14A, 15A of the side panels 14, respectively, when in the folded position, are positioned generally vertically above the side edges 11A of the base 11. This is important because when another collapsed container 10 is placed on top of the first collapsed container 10, the outside base bearers 17A have a flat surface on which to rest.
When the container 10 is in the erected configuration, it can be retained in that configuration by a latching means 34 comprising a latching bolt 35 and latching plate 39. The latching bolt 35 's rotatably mounted in the side bearers of the side panels 12, 13. The latching end 36 of the bolts 35 project towards the adjacent side panels 14, 15, and have two lateral projections 37. The latching end 36 is receivable in a key-way aperture 38 in the latching plate 39 which is mounted to the side bearers of the side panels 14, 15. The bolt 35 also comprises a laterally 13 projecting handle 41 to allow for rotation of the bo't after the latching end 36 is received in the key-way aperture 38. That is, the latching end 36 is releasably retained In the aperture 38.
KLN:1507b
