BACKGROUND ART A typical railway carriage air-brake system uses a generally cylindrical compressed-air reservoir having four compartments.
A ported end-plate is welded to one end of the cylindrical reservoir and two transverse partitions divide the cylindrical space into three shorter cylindrical compartments having the same diameter. A fourth compartment is formed adjacent the end-plate by means of a cylindrical shell of lesser diameter than the reservoir, which extends between the end-plate and the first partition to divide that compartment into two; one arranged concentrically within the other.
Respective ports in the end-plate communicate with the different compartments by means of pipes which extend from the end-plate through the interior of the reservoir.
In use, a distributor valve is bolted t the end-plate in order to control flow of compressed air through the ports in and out of the compartments of the reservoir.
This reservoir is difficult and expensive to manufacture.
0917s/EM 2 _a DISCLOSURE OF THE INVENTION According to the present invention there is provided a compressed-air reservoir for a vehicular air-brake system comprising: a plurality of compartments all bounded along one side by a single end-plate, the end-plate including a port for each compartment by means of which the compartments communicate with the exterior, the respective ports opening directly into each compartment.
This general arrangement has the advantage that there are no internal pipes, which simplifies manufacture and reduces cost.
The compartments are preferably elongate, and in a particular preferred form are cylindrical. Some compartments may be smaller than others, and in particular some may have smaller diameters than others. Smaller compartments may be located inside larger compartments.
The compartments may have the same length, and may extend between the end-plate and a second end-plate.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The invention will now be described by way of example Ii only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a cut-away elevational view of a compressed-air reservoir embodying the present invention, showing some hidden detail; and Figure 2 is an end elevational view of the reservoir of Figure i, also showing some hidden detail.

BEST MODES FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION Compressed-air reservoir 1 comprises a cylindrical external steel shell 2 extending between a first end-plate 3 and a second end-plate 4. Two mounting brackets 5 are attached to the upper side of the shell to facilitate mounting the reservoir, say, to the underneath of a railway carriage.
Inside reservoir i, a first compartment 6 forms a suppiementary reservoir having a volume of approximately 160 litres. This compartment is bounded on its exterior sides by shell 2 and end-plates 3 and 4.
Inside first compartment 6 there is a second compartment 7, which forms an accelerated release reservoir having a capacity of approximately 63 litres. Compartment 7 is bounded along its length by a cylindrical shell 10 having smaller diameter than shell 2 and a shorter length. At one end shell 10 is attached to first end-plate 3.
Inside first compartment 6 and second compartment 7 a third compartment 8 forms an auxiliary reservoir having a volume of approximately 13 litres. This compartment is A' bounded along its length by a third cylindrical shell 11 which has a smaller diameter than shell 10 and which extends between end-plates 3 and 4.
0917s/EM 4 A radially extending flange 12 extends between the exterior of shell 11 and the end of shell 10 remote from end-plate 3, to form a wall which encloses the other end of second compartment 7.
A fourth compartment 9 inside second compartment 7 forms a dummy reservoir having a volume of approximately litres. This compartment is bounded by a cylindrical shell 13 having a diameter greater than shell 11 but less than shell 10 and at one end is attached to an end- plate 3. A radially extending flange 14 extends between the exterior of shell 11 and the end of shell 14 in order to enclose the remaining side of the fourth compartment 9.
End-plate 3 is penetrated by ports 15, 16, 17 and 18 which directly communicate with compartments 6, 7, 8 and 9 respectively. Tapped holes may be sunk into the end-plate 3 in order to facilitate the attachment of a mounting bracket and valve assembly. The mounting bracket and valve assembly are bolted to end-plate 3 in order to control the flow of compressed air into and out of the compartments by means of these ports.
Drain pipes are provided for the compartments at their lowest points. In this case the reservoir is intended to be slung horizontally under a train and the drain pipe 19 for first compartment 6 is positioned in the shell wall 2 along its lower edge.
Drain pipes for the remaining compartments are positioned in end-plate 3 at the lowermost position in each compartment. Accordingly drain pipes 20, 21 and 22 are provided for compartments 7, 8 and 9 respectively.
0917s/EM 5 Although the invention has been described with reference to a preferred embodiment, it should be appreciated that it may be embodied in many other ways. For instance, all the compartments may extend the whole length of the reservoirs, so all the cylindrical shells are the same length, in which case the radially extending flanges 12 and 14 are dispensed with; of course, in this arrangement the diameters of the internal shells may have to be changed in order to ensure the correct volumes or relative volumes of each reservoir.

Claims (7)

1. A compressed-air reservoir for a vehicular air-brake system comprising: a plurality of compartments all bounded along one side by a single end-plate, the end-plate including a port for each compartment by means of which the compartments communicate with the exterior, the respective ports opening directly into each compartment.
2. A compressed-air reservoir according to claim 1, wherein the compartments are elongate.
3. A compressed-air reservoir according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the compartments are cylindrical.
4. A compressed-air reservoir according to any preceding claim, wherein the compartments have different sizes.
A compressed-air reservoir according to claim 3, wherein the compartments have different diameters.
6. A compressed-air reservoir according to any preceding claim, wherein the compartments have the same length, and extend between the end plate and a second end plate.
