ABSTRACT
An antitheft device for attachment to a steering wheel of an automobile comprising an elongated body member having two parallel passageways e4tending along its longitudinal direction, first hook means secured to the body member for engagement with a portion of the steering wheel wherein the first hook means engage the wheel from the inside thereof with the body member extending outward beyond the periphery of the steering wheel, a first elongated rod member adapated to move in telescopic fashion in one of the passageways of the body member, second hook means secured to the first rod member for engaging the inside portion of the steering wheel dimetrically opposed to the first hook means, a second elongated rod member adapted to extend in telescopic fashion along a direction reverse to the first rod member, and means associated with the body member engaging the rods within the passageways that allows the rod members to extend with respect to the body member to be locked at any of a plurality of positions.
AUTOMOBILE STEERING LOCK FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present inventton relates to an automobile antitheft device, and more particularly to a device for attachment to an automobile steering wheel to prevent complete rotation thereof for securing against unauthorized driving.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Antitheft device which attach to an automobile steering wheel have been known heretofore, as shown lately in U.S. Pat. No.4,738,127 to Johnson. Such antitheft device for attachment to a steering wheel of an automobile includes an elongated body member having a passage extending along an axis therethrough, an elongated rod member adapted to move in telescopic fashion in the passage way of the body member along the axis, opposed hooks for engaging the inside portion of the steering wheel and lock means associated with'the body member engaging the rod within the passage for locking the rod within the passage for locking the rod member station ry with respect to the body member at any of a plurality of positions. While the antitheft device described above is functional, it includes several defects. For example, both in and out of telescopic movements of the rod member need a key to unlock the lock means. Another problem with such device is that it presents pry points wherein a rigid pin or arcuate ruler-like thin objects can be inserted through a gap between the passage and periphery of the rod member to reach a spherical bearing of the lock means and further press it down by overcoming the bias force of a spring member thereon to release it from engaging the rod member in a groove thereof that renders unlock to the device.
It is accordingly an object of this invention to overcome or at least ameliorate one or more of the foregoing defects associated with prior art.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION According to the invention there is provided an antitheft device for attachment to a steering wheel of an automobile, comprising: a longitudinally extended integrally formed housing, said housing including: a) a first tubular member extending longitudinally, said first tubular member having an open end and a closed end and a first elongated passageway extending along its axis from the open end to the closed end; b) a second tubular member transversely displaced from said first tubular member extending longitudinally in a direction parallel to said first tubular member, said second tubular member having an open end and a closed end 25 and a second elongated passageway extending opposite to the first passageway along its axis from its open end to its closed end; c) a substantially L-shaped member coupled to said first tubular member adjacent said second end of said first tubular member and extending therefrom, said L-shaped member defining a hook for engagement with a first rim portion of a steering wheel; and, d) a third tubular member extending transverse said longitudinal direction of said first and second tubular members, said third tubular member being cylindrically shaped is formed on an upper surface of o• said first and second tubular members, said third tubular member having a transversely extending cylindrical passage formed therein, said third tubular member having a first through opening extending between said passage and said bore formed in said first tubular member, and a second through opening extending between said passage and said bore formed in said second tubular member; a first rod member dimensioned for telescopic receipt within said bore formed in said first tubular member, said first rod member having a plurality of annular grooves formed in axially spaced relation on one end thereof, and having a substantially U-shaped portion formed on an opposing end for engagement with a second rim portion of a steering wheel, each of said annular grooves having an inclined side wall extending from a vertical side wall of said annular groove; a second rod member dimensioned for telescopic receipt within said bore formed in said second tubular member, said second rod member having a plurality of annular grooves formed in axially spaced relation on a first end thereof, each of said annular grooves having an inclined side wall extending from a vertical side wall of said annular groove, said second rod member having a 25 manually operable tear gas cartridge coupled to a second end thereof; and, locking means disposed within said passage of said third tubular member for releasably coupling said first Soand second rod members to said housing, said locking means including: a) a pair of spring biased rod-like locating members, each of said locating members being disposed in a respective one of said first and second through openings formed in said third tubular member, each of said locating members having an insert end for respective engagement with one of said plurality of annular grooves of one said respective first or second rod members; b) a locking member disposed within said cylindrical passage of said third tubular member, said locking member having an arcuate front wall, two pairs of upstanding ribs, each of said pairs of ribs being disposed in spaced longitudinal relation, each of said ribs of one of said two pairs of ribs having an inclined camming surface, each of said locating members having a pair of side surface portions disposed in mating relationship with respective inclined camming surfaces of a respective pair of said ribs, and a pair of slotted through openings, each of said slotted through openings being disposed between a respective one of said pairs of ribs, each of said slotted through openings being aligned with a respective one of said first or second through openings for passage of a portion of a respective one of said pair of locating members, said locating members being vertically displaced responsive to lateral displacement of said locking member; and c) a lock disposed within said cylindrical passage of said third tubular member and having an inclined end surface abutting said arcuate front wall of said locking member for laterally displacing said locking member responsive to a rotative actuation of said lock.

The actuating means includes a substantially ves_-sel shaped actuating member 2 which is formed with a curved -front wall 20, a rear wall 25 ,,tprnally formedl with a projection 26 for retaining one end of a biasing spring 27, two s I oits 21, 22 located between two pair of opposedr ribs 23, 24 which serve as rail s and formed with up- going slopes 2'3, '24 towards the curved front wall The locating members 3, 4 include rod-like hearings 30, 40 having projections 32, 42 on tops for receiving lower end of biasing springs 5, 6, side surfaces 31 -11 mating slopes of the rails 23, 24 of the actuating member 2, and tenon ends 73, 43 dcefined with vertical surfaces 430 and slanting bottoms 331, 431.
In assembly, as shown in FIGS. 2 to 5, the rod lii'e bearings- 30, 40 are inserted into the vertical paiage 14:1, 1430 of the housing 14 thr-ough the openings I141 and slots 21, 22 of the actuating member 2. After installing ease 0: the rod-like bearings 30, 40, the openings 141 are closed 20 with disc plates, 7, 8 so as to maintain tile bearings and springs 5, 6 in position. The springs 6 t~hus disposed normally bias the rod-like bearings 30, downwardly so that tenon ends -31, 43 thereof engaging s* the grooves, R11, R21 of the first and second rod member R1, R2. The spring 27 with tne other end thereof abutting against an inner surface of a rear wall of the housing 14 normally biases the actuating member 2 towards the locking means 9.
In operation, when tne slanting end 900 is oriented downwarly, as shown in FIG. 3, that locates the actuating member 2 in its first position whereas the tenon ends 33, 43 of the first and second locating member 30, 40 locate in a lower or first position and protrude into grooves in the rod member to lock the device. Although in locking condition, the convex or slope side walls R12, R22 of the grooves R11, R21 of the first and second rods R1, R2 allow the rod members R1, R2 of this antitheft device to extend in telescopic fashion with respect to the body member 1 in opposite directions with respect to each other by overcoming biasing forces of the spring members 5, 6 yet the vertical side wall R13 of the first rod member Ri and 15 the vertical side wall R23 of the second rod member R2 abutting the vertical surfaces 330, 430 of the tenon ends **o 33, 43 of the rod-like bearings 30, 40, prohibit the rod members R1, R2 from moving to collapse with respect tn oo.o. th body member 1. By so doing, as in locking condition 20 of the antitheft device of the present invention, the first rod member R1 can be extended for engaging opposed

portions of a steering wheel with hooks 13, RIO without a key to unlock the device. Furthermore, the secord rod member R2 can also be extended into a dead corner between front wind shield and a side window of the car for restricting the steering wheel from complete rotation.
When the locking member 90 of the locking means 9 is rotated 180 degrees to a second position, the slanting end 900 of the locking member 90 forces the actuating member 2 to slide left into a second position by overcoming biasing force of the spring 27, as shown in FIG. 4, the rod-like bearings 30, 40 slide on the rails 23, 24 by means of surfaces 31, 41 thereof from their lower or first position into higher or second position along the up-going slopes and thus lifting the rod-like bearings 30, 40 to release the tenon ends 33, 43 thereof from corresponding grooves. By so doing, the rod members Ri, R2 can move in and out in telescopic fashion with respect to the body member 1.

Claims (2)
1. An antitheft device for attachment to a steering wheel of an automobile, comprising: a longitudinally extended integrally formed housing, said housing including: a) a first tubular member extending longitudinally, said first tubular member having a bore extending axially a predetermined distance from an opening formed in a first end of said first tubular member to an opposing second end; b) a second tubular member transversely displaced from said first tubular member extending longitudinally in a direction parallel to said first tubular member, said second tubular member having a bore extending axially a predetermined distance from an opening formed in a first end of said second tubular member to an opposing second end; c) a substantially L-shaped member coupled to said first tubular member adjacent said second end of said first tubular member and extending therefrom, said L-shaped member defining a hook for engagement with a first rim portion of a steering wheel; and, d) a third tubular member extending transverse said longitudinal 20 direction of said first and second tubular members, said third tubular member being cylindrically shaped is formed on an upper surface of said first and second tubular members, said third tubular member having a transversely extending cyclindrical passage formed therein, said third tubular member having a first through opening extending between said passage and said bore formed in said first tubular member, and a second through opening extending between said passage and said bore formed in said second tubular member; a first rod member dimensioned for telescopic receipt within said S"bore formed in said first tubular member, said first rod member having a plurality of annular grooves formed in axially spaced relation on one end thereof, and having a substantially U-shaped portion formed on an opposing end for engagement with a second rim portion of a steering wheel, each of said annular grooves having an inclined side wall extending from a vertical side wall of said annular groove; a second rod member dimensioned for telescopic receipt within said bore formed in said second tubular member, said second rod member having a plurality of annular grooves formed in axially spaced relation on a first end thereof, each of said annular grooves having an inclined side 9 RLF/1749m wall extending from a vertical side wall of said annular groove, said second rod member having a manually operable tear gas cartridge coupled to a second end thereof; and, locking means disposed within said passage of said third tubular member for releasably coupling said first and second rod members to said housing, said locking means including: a) a pair of spring biased rod-like locating members, each of said locating members being disposed in a respective one of said first and second through openings formed in said third tubular member, each of said locating members having an insert end for respective engagement with one of said plurality of annular grooves of one said respective first or second rod members; b) a locking member disposed within said cylindrical passage of said third tubular member, said locking member having an arcuate front wall, two pairs of upstanding ribs, each of said pairs of ribs being disposed in spaced longitudinal relation, each of said ribs of one of said two pairs of ribs having an inclined camming surface, each of said locating members having a pair of side surface portions disposed in m mating relationship with respective inclined camming surfaces of a 20 respective pair of said ribs, and a pair of slotted through openings, each of said slotted through openings being disposed between a respective one of said pairs of ribs, each of said slotted through openings being aligned with a respective one of said first or second through openings for passage of a portion of a respective one of said pair of locating 25 members, said locating members being vertically displaced responsive to i: lateral displacement of said locking member; and, c) a lock disposed within said cylindrical passage of said third tubular member and having an inclined end surface abutting said arcuate front wall of said locking member for laterally displacing said locking member responsive to a rotative actuation of said lock.
