Box 373 Collaroy Beach NSW 2097 Complete Specification for an invention entitled: "HINGE SETTING DEVICE" The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me: -2- The present invention relates to a device for use in connection with the fitting of hinges and similar hardware to doors, door jambs and the like.
It is well known that the fitting of hinges to doors and door jambs is a relatively slow and labour-intensive task and one that requires much precision. It is necessary to determine, as far as possible, all dimensions of the rebate to be cut into the stile of the door and into the stile of S. the jamb so that the hinge may be set in to the correct 10 extent, with the hinge substantially flush with the surrounding surface.
If hinges are not fitted correctly on a door, it is likely that the door will not "hang" correctly and, for example, the o door may not be stable in the open position but may tend to 9 0 swing shut. In addition, the incorrect fitting of hinges may .9 9 result in an unsightly job; if the rebate is made too long, too wide or too deep, for example, the appearance of the job is poor. In severe cases of poor fitting, the door may even be out of alignment with the jamb.
Most hinges are made of pressed metal and, even when hinges are nominally of one particular size, it will be found that actual dimensions vary, allowing for acceptable manufacturing tolerances. Hence, there is always a need to measure each hinge as well as to determine the desired location of the hinge on the door and to match that location on the jamb.
-3- Most carpenters use a hammer and chisel to mark out and remove the wood in the area of the rebate and enlarge or adjust the rebate by frequent measuring and re-checking to ensure an acceptable result. This procedure is extremely time-consuming (and hence expensive) and the results are not guaranteed.
94.999 99 9 10 9 9 99 9999 99 *9 9 Further, the hammer-and-chisel approach is not always satisfactory when working with soft woods, such as cedar, since to cut a rebate in cedar requires an extremely sharp chisel.
There have been attempts in the past to alleviate some of these problems. For example, in Australian Patent Specification No. 212206 filed in 1955 there is disclosed a device which is clamped to the door and which uses a recess defining cutter of pre-selected size to mark out and partially cut the rebate and a recess forming cutter to complete the cutting of the rebate.
.999., 9 The main problem with this prior art device is that the recess defining cutter must be selected to match the size of the hinge. As indicated above, modern hinges are generally made of cast metal and hinges nominally of one particular size may vary from one another in actual size by a millimetre or so. It would be impractical to supply recess defining cutters in an almost infinite range of sizes; in addition, it would be quite inconvenient to have to change one size of the I i recess defining cutter for another even if the sizes were available.
Another attempt to overcome the problems associated with setting hinges is disclosed in Australian Patent Specification No. 231891 filed in 1958, in which a reversible template is used to mark out hinge positions.
Howevp-, this suffers from the same type of problem as that descrloed above in connection with No. 212206, namely that there is no flexibility in accommodating hinges of different 10 sizes, and in particular hinges which are close, but not S• exactly the same, in size.
It is apparent that none of the prior art attempts to overcome the existing problems has succeeded, because carpenters still use the old hammer-and-chisel method of setting hinges. This is so despite the fact that almost every building has hinged doors; in the average domestic building there are around 25 doors, each of which carries at least two hinges.
The present invention seeks to overcome or at least substantially alleviate the problems so far encountered and to provide a device which permits the rapid and accurate setting of hinges in doors, door jambs and the like. While the present invention will be described herein in connection with door hinges, it will be appreciated that the invention is applicable to certain latches and other uses, such as 2 0* o windows, all of which are encompassed by the terms "similar hardware" and "doors, door jambs and the like", respectively.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a device for use in connection with the fitting of hinges and similar hardware to doors, door jambs and the like, the device comprising: a hinge cutting guide incorporating a hinge recess.
adjusting means adapted to be adjusted in relation to the hinge recess in accordance with a first dimension of said hinge to be fitted, and clamping means adapted to be adjusted in relation to the hinge recess in accordance with a second dimension of said hinge to be fitted, said clamping means further adapted to secure said device on said door, jamb or the like.
door jamb or the like.
The device of the invention is intended to be usea in conjunction with a router, trimmer or similar cutting apparatus which can accurately co-operate with the hinge cutting guide and which is adjustable as to cutting depth.
The hinge recess should preferably be large enough to accommodate the maximum size hinge with which the carpenter will normally work, although if desired, the device may be sold in various sizes of hinge recesses. Thus, one size of device may cover the normal range of hinges encountered in domestic work, while a second size of device may have a larger hinge recess for commercial use or unusual -6applications, for example.
Most conveniently, the hinge recess is rectangular.
The hinge cutting guide preferably includes gauge means to assist in determining one or more dimensions of the hinge to be fitted (as e ot on hh -door jamb or the lik-e).
Preferably, the adjusting means comprises a pair of plates which are longitudinally spaced in relation to the hinge recess, each one of the plates being adapted to be moved towards or away from the other plate by way of fastening means.
Suitably, the fastening means comprises worm screws or other assembly capable of fine adjustment.
In addition, the fastening means may further include at least one interim member to secure said plates in position during the cutting process so as to prevent an accidental 1displacement of the plates. Typically, said interim member is a lock nut.
The clamping means preferably consists of at least two opposed plates for gripping the door, jamb or the like, together with setting means such as screwed rods for tightening or loosening the plates. Tho 'mping mTah m y the 1 I -7also facilitte adjuptmi- of the door or jamb4-F--e-ln-ee--- -the hinge reGess, in accordance wi4th a dimenion (ouch awidth) of the hinpe to be fittedrrj The device of the invention may be constructed of any suitable material, including steel or plastic.
The invention will now be described in connection with a preferred embodiment thereof, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is an isometric view of the device; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional elevational view, taken in direction A A of Fig. 2, and shows the device clamped to a door jamb; and Fig. 4 is a sectional elevational view, taken in direction A A of Fig. 2, and shows the device clamped to a door.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, device 10 has a hinge cutting guide 11a and 11b including a hinge recess 12. Gauge means 13, 14 and 15 are provided as indicated to assist in determining the approximate hinge size and in the setting of the router.
jz i Adjusting means consists of a pair of plates 16 and 17 adapted to slide over hinge cutting guide 11a towards and away from each other, the adjustment being effected by means of screws 18 and 19 passing through lugs and 21 and into housings 22 and 23. If desired, a locking nut (not shown) or other means may be provided in plates 16 and 17 to temporarily secure them in position during the cutting process so as to prevent their accidental displacement.
.ooo.i Clamping means consists of plate 24 which opposes a pair of plates, one of which is shown at 25 in Figs. 3 and 4. The Smovement of plates 24 and 25 towards and away from each other is operated by handles 26 and 27 and shafts 28 and 29 respectively. Handle 30 and shaft 31 operate the third plate.
As shown in Fig. 3, to set a hinge in a door jamb 32, device is clamped onto jamb 32 by tightening plates 24 and (and also the third plate which is not shown) and by adjusting those plates in accordance with the hinge width.
Plates 16 and 17 are adjusted for longitudinal dimension of the hinge. An electric trimmer (not shown) is positioned on the hinge cutting guide 11a and is used to rout out jamb 32 to the desired depth so that a rebate 33 is formed.
As shown in Fig. 4, to set the corresponding part of the same hinge in door 34, device 10 is clamped onto door 34 without changing the adjustment of plates 16 and 17 and the I -9i'l rebate is routed out as before.
The rebates so formed on both the door jamb and the door are made quickly and with minimum fuss and accept the hinge neatly so that the hinge lies flush with the surrounding surface. Hinges may be set with the device of the present invention much more quickly and professionally than hitherto possible and the finished job has an excellent appearance.
9**Ow* The fact that a router or similar apparatus may be used to cut the rebate means that the device of the invention is suitable for rebating soft woods such as cedar.
It is to be understood that the invention disclosed herein is not to be limited by the specific embodiment described, but that other alterations, variations, modifications and additions may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
