CARTON DIVIDER PARTITION STRUCTURE Details of Associated Provisional Applications: Nos: PK 0546 PK 3974 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me:- -1- CARTON DIVIDER PARTITION STRUCTURE THIS INVENTION relates to the packaging of articles and in particular to the packaging of bottles or like cylindrical or square or rectangular shaped articles in cartons.
Packaging in cartons of articles such as bottles is known using carton partition or divider structures consisting of an assembly of part-slotted interlocked paperboard panel members forming rectangular pockets. Such assemblies, although moderately successful in use, suffer from the disadvantage of lack of rigidity and do not snugly hold the bottles in the cartons. Also with present day methods of filling cartons by feeding multiples of bottles in an upstanding manner into the carton or onto the unfolded carton blank such prior known interlocked assemblies cannot be used and hand filling or packing of the cartons must be cesorted to.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a new form of packaging using divider structures or partitions which will obviate the aforementioned disadvantages.
According to the present invention there is provided A divider partition structure comprising two rectangular convoluted panels connected by a series of resilient hinge portions with the convolutions extending substantially perpendicular to the hinge portions so as to define receptacle pockets, the apex of each convolution on one side of each panel having at least one pari of spaced-apart cuts extending transversely thereacross so as to form and 25 define a pair of transversely extending tab members in engaging o .relationship to hold the panels in convoluted form, the construction and arrangement being such that when the panels are folded in back- to- 0000 back relationship about the hinge portions, the receptacle pockets of each panel face in opposite directions.
0 30 The panels may be formed of paperboard or single or double faced corrugated paperboard.
The hinge portions may be located between V-shaped cuts or cutout portions on said panels.
The structure is preferably formed from a blank suitably cut and incorporating fold lines formed by scoring or the provision of a line of weakness as is well known in the paperboard art.
In order that the invention and its manner of performance may be 3 more fully understood reference will now be made to an embodiment of the invention as iliuitrated in the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a p.an view of a blank of one embodiment of the partition divider structure; Figure 2 is a perspective view of the formed partition divider structure from the blank of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a plan view of a pair of formed partition divider structures of Figure 2 locating bottles in a carton; Figure 4 is a side elevation taken along the lines 4-4 of Figure 3; Figure 5 is a cross-sectional plan view of a partition divider structure taken along the line 5-5 of Figure 4 and illustrating the interlocked tab members of the formed divider structure; Figure 6 is a plan view of a section of the formed partition divider structure illustrating a further embodiment of connected tab members of the invention; Figure 7 is a view similar to Figure 6 illustrating a further embodiment of connected tab members; Figure 8 is a plan view of a blank of a further embodiment of the partition divider structure; Figure 9 is a perspective view of the formed partition divider structure from the blank of Figure 8; Figure 10 is a side elevation of the structure of Figure 9; Figure 11 is a plan view of a portion of the blank of Figures 1 and 8 illustrating a further embodiment of the connecting tab members of the invention; Figure 12 is a plan view of a portion of the blank of Figures 1 and 8 illustrating a further embodiment of the connecting tab members; Figure 13 is a plan view of a section of the formed partition 30 divider structure illustrating the connection of the tab members of Figure 12; and Figure 14 is a side elevation similar to Figure 10 and illustrating the connected tab members of Figure 12.
Referring to Figures 1 to 7 of the drawings, the partition divider structure is formed of a rectangular paperboard or corrugated paperboard blank generally indicated at 5. Blank 5 consists of two similar panels 6 and 7 connected at fold lines by hinges 8 and Vshaped cut-out portions 9 are provided at the edges of panels 6 and 7 between hinges 8.
Fold lines 10 extend from the bottom of the V-shaped cut-out portions 9 and additional fold lines 11 extend in parallel relationship with fold lines 10 for the purpose as will be hereinafter described.
Across the fold lines 10 are cut-out portions 12 each locating a pair of tab members 13.
To provide the partition divider structure generally indicated at 14, each pair of tab members are overlapped and interlocked to form apexes 15 along fold lines 10 to define a convoluted structure with fold lines 11 imparting a substantially curved or non-planar configuration to the convolutions of the structure.
Instead of interlocking the tab members 13 may be glued and/or stapled or taped in overlapping or abutting relationship or they may 0*:0 be attached in abutting relationship as shown in Figure 6 as by stapling and/or gluing or taping.
*so: By using single faced corrugated paperboard as in the g 2 illustrated embodiment an advantage accrues in that the corrugations 20 of one panel engage in the corrugations of the other panel and this *provides rigidity and obviates transverse movement of one panel in relation to the other panel.
The illustrated embodiment is designed to extend the full height of the bottles 16 in the carton 17 so that when a packed carton is :i 25 inverted with the bottle corks or closures at the bottom thereof, the S..o partition divider structure 14 will not slip down in the carton 17 allowing undesirable contact between the bottoms of the bottles which may be inclined to tilt in the carton depending on the length of the neck portion of the bottles.
According to another embodiment (not shown) the V-shaped cut-out portions 9 may be eliminated and the hinges 8 may as in the previous embodiment be located between adjacent pairs of fold lines 11.
Referring to Figures 8, 9 and 10 there is illustrated a further embodiment of the partition divider structure of the invention comprising a blank generally indicated at 18. Blank 18 consists of two panels 19 and 20 connected at fold lines by hinges 21 and V-shaped cuts 22 in blank 18 extend between hinges 21.
Fold lines 23 extend through the apex of each V-shaped cut 22 and additional fold lines 24 extend in parallel relationship with fold lines 23 for the purpose as described in relation to the previous embodiment.
Across the fold lines 23 there are located cut-out portions each locating a pair of tab members 26 similar to the tab members 13 of the previous embodiment.
To provide the partition divider structure generally indicated at 27, each pair of tab members 26 are overlapped and interlocked to form apexes 28 along fold lines 23 to define a convoluted structure with fold lines 24 imparting a substantially curved or non-planar configuration to the convolutions of the structure in similar manner to that of the previous embodiment.
As described in the previous embodiment the use of single faced corrugated paperboard provides rigidity to the structure.
The embodiment of Figures 8, 9 and 10 provides V-shaped extensions 29 above hinges 21 so that the divider structure 27 extends the full height of the bottles in a carton for the purpose as previously described, and the divider structure of this embodiment may 20 be advantageously used with bottles having long tapering necks.
A further advantage accruing from the embodiment of Figures 8, 9 and 10 is a substantial saving in paperboard in that the blank of this embodiment is approximately two thirds the length of the blank of Figure 1 which is designed to accommodate bottles having short necks 25 and long bodies.
Figure 11 illustrates a further embodiment of the interlocking tab members whereby tab member 30 can be inserted in tab member 31 in .00* ar Sr e.G.

a secure locking manner.
Figures 12, 13 and 14 illustrate yet another embodiment of the tab members whereby short tabs 32 are formed in the blanks 5 and 18 and when drawn together to form the convoluted receptacle pockets are stapled in end abutting relationship as illustrated in Figures 13 and
