Abstract
The elasticity, hold and sheen of the hair are considerably improved by application of a hair spray composition which is intended for delivery from a mechanical spray device or using liquefied hydrocarbon propellants or compressed gases and contains, besides about 30 to 90 % by weight of a lower alcohol and about 1 to 15 % by weight of at least one water-based film-forming polymer, in addition about 0.1 to about 5 % by weight of at least one C6-C18-acyllactylate.

This invention comprises a novel hair spray composition designed for dispensing by a mechanical spraying device or with liquefied hydrocarbon propellents or compressed gases, which, upon application, fixes the hair style, provides elastic style retention and additionally gives shine to the hair.
Hair sprays applied onto the hair and delivered from aerosol cans o using liquefied chlorfluorocarbon propellents have been known a, a* 9 since a long time.
Some time ago, due to their supposed negative environmental effects, these pressure-liquefied propellents were replaced by other hair sprays which are activated by added hydrocarbon propellents, particularly propane, butane or isobutane and mixt- 15 ures thereof, or by compressed gases, particularly dimethyether, carbon dioxide, nitrogen or nitrous oxide, or by hair spray compositions dispensed from mechanical spraying devices. Although S hair sprays as used presently are already highly sophisticated, they still do not fulfil all requirements expecte c It is therefore the object of this invention to provide a hair spray composition which is dispensed by a mechanical spraying device or using added liquefied hydrocarbon propellents or compressed gases, which composition gives the hair a strong set without making it rigid or harsh but rather spends flexible volume and additionally shine.
Z' li_ 1 i .i b 2 The problem is solved by adding about 0.1 to about 5% by weight of at least one C 6 -Ci8-acyl lactylate or a water-soluble salt thereof to an aqueous hair spray composition comprising about 30 to 90% by weight, especially about 40 to about 75% by weight, calculated to the total composition, of a lower alcohol of the group ethyl alcohol, n-propyl alcohol and (or) isopropyl alcohol, and about 1 to 15% by weight, calculated to the total composition, of at least one film-forming polymer.
(O The proportions mentioned above each refer to the total composition excluding any possible proportion of a propellent.
For a long time, acyl lactylates of the general formula *44 S. R C CH C)n OH II I II O CH 3
O
wherein R denotes a linear or branched-chain alkyl or alkenyl group with 6 to 18 carbon atoms and n stands for a number between one and five, and their application in cosmetic preparations, cQ especially as moisturizers, have been known.
f In this context reference is made to an article of L.J.Murphy and F.Baiocchi, "The Role of Acyl Lactylates in Cosmetics and Toiletries", published in the Drug Cosmetic Industry 122/5 (May 1978), 35, describing their specific application as moisturizers.
1~ at a a ceo a, *s W04* *4 0 *445 .4 US-Patent 3,275,503 discloses the use of these substances, especially sodium caproyl lactylate, as antimicrobial agents.
Moreover, US-Patent 3,472,940 describes the use of acyl lactylates, sodium stearoyl-2-lactylate, for deodorant sticks.
Finally, US-Patent 3,728,447 discloses the employment of fatty acid lactylates and glycolates in conditioning shampoos.
10 Also, European Patent Application 278,370 describes the use of branched-chain acyl lactylates and their salts for cosmetic preparations, particularly shampoos and hair rinses.
None of these documents, however, includes any indication as to the surprising effect of these components when combined with filmforming polymers for use in hair spray compositions to improve elasticity, volume and shine of the hair.
Within the scope of the invention, suitable compositions of both 0O linear and branched-chain acyl lactylates are used, as already mentioned. Particularly preferred are stearoyl and isostearoyl lactylate; the production of the latter and of other branchedchain acyl lactylates is disclosed in European Patent Application 278,370 already mentioned to which reference is expressly made in this context.
A
4 Other suitable acyl lactylates are caproyl lactylate and salts thereof, decanoyl lactylate, lauroyl lactylate, myristoyl lactylate, etc. The preferred number of lactic acid groups is about n 1 to 2, but larger numbers between 3 and 5 are also possible.
o' r 4 0 The number of lactic acid groups within acyl lactylates is determined by the quantity proportions used and the conditions of reaction. Reference is made again to US-Patent 2,733,252.
t A group of acyl lactylates whicn are suitable for use in the hair spray compositions according to this invention are marketed under the trade name "Pationics" by Patco Cosmetic Products, C.J. Patterson Co.
op As mentioned, acyl lactylates may be used by themselves, as well d bas the water-soluble salts thereof. Preferred are the alkali salts such as the sodium, potassium and ammonium salt, also earth 1 alkaline salts, calcium acyl lac:ylates; however, alkanol rO amine salts may also be used.
Unsaturated acyl lactylates, e.g. as disclosed in the European Patent Application 443,956, may be used within the scope of the invention, too.
1 w The optimum proportion of acyl lactylate is between about 0.1 to by weight, preferably 0.25 to 2.5% by weight, especially to 1.5% by weight, each calculated to the total composition.
According to the invention, the film-forming polymers used together with the acyl lactylates or water-soluble salts thereof are normally well-known products.
9o oo In this context, the known vinyl acetate/vinyl pyrrolidone co- 10 polymers are suitable as well as those made from acrylic acid- /vinyl acetate, terpolymers from vinyl pyrrolidone, acrylic acid, esters and (meth)acrylic acid and copolymers of vinyl ethers and maleic acid anhydride which hydrolyze in aqueous media, cationic polymers such as copolymers from vinyl pyrrolidone and dialkyl E 1 aminoalkyl(meth)acrylates which can be quaternized, dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride homo- and copolymers, with acrylamide, copolymers from hydroxyethyl cellulose and diallyl dimethyl *4.oo ammonium chloride, hydroxyethyl cellulose cross-linked with epichlorohydrin being quaternized with trimethyl amine, natural film- O forming agents such as chitosan, etc.
A particularly preferred film-forming agent of the hair spray N compositions according to the invention is a vinyl pyrrolidone- /vinyl acetate copolymer, for example as it is available on the market under the trade name "Luviskol VA 28", in a proportion of 1 to 15% by weight, preferably 2.5 to 10% by weight, more preferred to 8% by weight, calculated to the total composition.
1 i i^ 6 According to a further preferred embodiment of the invention, this vinyl acetate/vinyl pyrrolidone copolymer is provided in a mixture with a cationic polymer, a quaternized vinyl pyrrolidone/dialkyl aminoalkyl methacrylate copolymer having a cationic polymer proportion of about 0.1 to about 2.5% by weight, preferably from about 0.5 to 1.5% by weight, calculated to the a total composition.
o o 0 The compositions according to the invention may contain all usual 10 ingredients, e.g. further solvents such as lower alkanes, npentane or isopentane in proportions from about 2.5 to 10% by weight of the total composition, acetone, polyalcohols and ethers thereof, glycerol, propylene glycol and monomethyl ethers thereof, softeners, hair conditioning agents, such as panthenol or phytantriol, perfumes, surface-active substances, etc.
Types and quantities of such admixtures are well-known to the S expert and are, therefore, described in any standard cosmetic monography.1 o Although the invention prefers hair sprays to be dispensed by mechanical spraying devices, it is also possible to use the same together with compressed gases, preferably dimethyl ether, carbon dioxide, nitrogen or nitrogen oxide (N 2 0) or hydrocarbon propellents such as propane, butane or isobutane and mixtures thereof, as they are available on the market.
