Actual Inventor(s): Address for Service: Invention Title: Spruson Ferguson, Patent Attorneys Level 33 St Martins Tower, 31 Market Street Sydney, New South Wales, 2000, Australia A Brace Coupling ASSOCIATED PROVISIONAL APPLICATION DETAILS [313 Application No(s) [33) Country C32) Application Date PK0459 AU 4 June 1990 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us:- 5815/3 The present invention relates to braces used to support concrete panels which are to form a wall of a structure.
In this construction of buildings, particularly commercial buildings, from prefabricated concrete panels, the panels are retained in a generally vertical orientation by braces until they are secured in position to form a side of the building. These braces need to be sufficiently strong to support the panel and must be adjustable so that theorientation of the panel may be altered during erection.
The upper end of each brace is provided with a "swivel" joint which secures the brace pipe to the brace shoe. The brace shoe engages the concrete panel, and the brace lo pipe extends to a foot which engages a ground surface or concrete floor.
Previously known "swivel" joints have been prone to failure and accordingly in certain circumstances can be a safety problem.
It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate the above disadvantages.
There is disclosed herein a coupling to attach a brace pipe to a brace foot, said coupling comprising: a hollow body with a longitudinal axis, said body having a socket at one end and a neck portion at the other end; a pin extending longitudinally through said neck portion and having a head located 20 within said body and which will not pass through said neck, said pin having a shaft portion extending from said head through said neck portion so as to have an extremity exposed for attachment to said foot; and a securing pin extending transversely through said shaft portion at a position external of said body, and projecting laterally of said shaft portion so that the pin is 25 captively located with respect to said body.
A preferred form of the present invention will now be described by way of example "with reference to the accompanying drawing, which schematically depicts in part section side elevation a "swivel" coupling for a brace.
In the accompanying drawing there is schematically depicted a swivel coupling The coupling 10 has a hollow body 12 providing a socket 11 to engage a brace pipe 13.
The body 12 has a side wall 14 provided with a pair of apertures 15 -which are transversely aligned and on opposite side of the longitudinal axis 16 of the coupling A pin INALIBLIOOO3B:vgs 2 -2passes through the apertures 15 and through the pipe 13 to secure the pipe 13 to the body 12. The pin transfers load from the coupling 10 to the pipe 13.
The body 12 has a neck portion 17 providing a longitudinal passage 18 through which there passes a primary pin 19. The primary pin 19 has a head 20 which is larger than the passage 18 and which is located internally of the body 12. The pin 19 has a shaft portion 21 which passes through the passage 18 so as to project beyond the body 12. The primary pin 19 has a first passage 22 within which there is located a roll pin 23. The roll pin 23 extends beyond the shaft portion 21 so that the primary pin 19 is captively located with respect to the body 12.
The extremity of the shaft portion 21 has a passage 24 which receives a further pin, to attach the coupling to the brace foot.
Abutting the head 20 is a steel thrust washer 25 while sandwiched 15 between the steel washer 25 and internal surface 26 of the body 12 is a teflon washer 27 to aid in rotation of said body 12 with respect to the pin 19.
