COMPLETE SPECIFICATION STANDARD PATENT Invention Title: "Cattle Weighing Platform" The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to us -2- This invention relates to weighing platforms, of the kind commonly used for cattle weighing in a race or crush. Such platforms currently in use consist of a frame fabricated from rectangular hollow section steel carrying a gridmesh floor. The frame are typically 2m long and 650 mm wide, and in weighing, are supported on a pair of weighbeams or on loadcells.
The use of a mesh floor is necessary to avoid a build-up of dirt and droppings, but is found to be I0 10 disadvantageous in the weighing process. We have found that there is a tendency for the hooves of the animal to slide towards the side of the platform, with the result that the hoof leaves the platform and part S. of the animal's weight is supported on the crush or 15 race in which the platform is located. When this occurs, the weighing device must wait for the hoof to return to the platform before it will record a stable maximum for the animal's weight, and this delay can be a significant part of the total time required for an 20 animal's weight to be recorded.
The object of the present invention is to reduce these weighing delays.
The invention is based on the observation of a characteristic hoof placement behaviour pattern in 25 cattle, whereby a hoof which is placed on narrow ridge is quickly withdrawn and replaced in a direction towards the animal's body. We have found that by placing an upright flange along the sides of the platform, cattle whose hooves move toward the edge of the platform and are placed on this flange, quickly replace the relevant hoof on the platform, and as a consequence the speed of weighing is increased. In tests leading to the development of the invention, an improvement in weighing time of up to 50% has been observed, and it will be appreciated that when large numbers of cattle are being weighed, this represents a significant saving.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a weighing platform incorporating the invention; and Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the platform of Fig. 1.
The illustrated platform comprises a frame consisting of side members 10, end members 11, cross-bars 12 and a central rib 13. These members may all be of RHS steel, and welded. Attached by welding to the frame is a mesh floor 14.
In accordance with the invention, a pair of upright 15 steel flanges 15 are attached, suitably by welding, along the outer edges of the side members 10. The flanges are in this embodiment 25 mm high, and in general their height should be of this order. The i dimensions of the flanges may of course be varied without departing from the scope of the invention.
.oe. The upper limit of height will be determined from the need for the flange to be not so high that the animal will no longer step on it, and the lower limit of *height will be determined by the need to invoke the behavioural response described above. It is believed that the optimum range for the flange height is between 10 and 40 mm, and preferably between 15 and Naturally the invention is applicable to platforms constructed in ways other than that described and illustrated herein.
Claims (4)
1. A cattle weighing platform including a floor for supporting an animal to be weighed characterised in that an upright flange capable of being stepped on by an animal is located along each of two opposite sides of the floor.
2. A cattle weighing platform according to claim 1 wherein the height of said flange does not exceed mm.
3. A cattle weighing platform according to claim 1 wherein said height is between 10 and 40 mm.
4. A cattle weighing platform according to claim 1 wherein said height is between 15 and 25 mm. A cattle weighing platform substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawings. DATED this 11th day of January 1993 RUDDWEIGH AUSTRALASIA PTY. LIMITED Patent Attorneys for the Applicant: HALFORD CO. ABSTRACT A cattle weighing platform is provided with a pair of upright side flanges (15) of a height which enables an animal to place a hoof on the flange. It has been found that this will cause the animal to replace its foot onto the platform. *i *i
