PATENTS ACT 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR A STANDARD PATENT
ORIGINAL
NAME OF APPLICANT: ACTUAL INVENTOR: ADDRESS FOR SERVICE: MARIE LOUIS CLAUDE TALBOT MARIE LOUIS CLAUDE TALBOT
OBERINS
LEVEL 32 530 COLLINS STREET MELBOURNE VICTORIA AUSTRALIA 3000 c o TITLE: BAT FOR CATCHING BALLS The following statement is a full description of this invention including the best method performing it known to me.
C. C FIELD OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to a bat for catching balls.
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION In nmy South African Patent No 91/10031 I described and claimed a bat which comprises a handle and a head, the head including an orifice through which a ball may pass, the orifice including flexible ball catching material, the catching material being incluied between a pair of elements slidable in a frame between a first position in which the ball passes therebetween and a second position to which the eleients are moved 10 by virtue of the catching material being acted upon by the entering ball, the elements being adapted to retain the ball in the second position, It has now been found that the mechanism may be made far simpler and it is an object of the invention to provide a very simple and yet effective bat.
15 THE INVENTION According to the present invention, a bat for catching balls includes a :e handle and a head, the head having an aperture of diameter larger than that of the ball to be caught, a strip of flexible material behind the aperture, one end of the strip being firmly attached to the bat and its other end connected to a sliding member which is adapted to slide between a first position in which it is clear of the orifice and a second position in which it at least partially closes the orifice to capture a 1_ I_ ball between it and the strip, the movement to the second position being assisted by spring means releasable as the sliding member commences its movement to the second position.
Thus, a leaf spring may be provided which is just off-centre in the first position of the sliding member and thus serves to retain the sliding member in its first position until a ball strikes the strip thereby causing a first movement of the sliding member, the spring then acting in tiie opposite sense to cause the sliding member to snap into its second position to hold the ball captive.
EMBODIMENT OF THE INVENTION An embodiment of the invention is described below with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a sectional plan view of a bat according to the invention; and Figure 2 is a sectional side view of the bat with a captive ball.
Referring first to Figure 1 a bat has a head 10 and a handle 12. An anchor piece 14 is provided at one side of an orifice 16 for flexible strip 18 (such as a nylon strap).
The other end of the strip is attached to a sliding member 20, which slides in guides 22 having a 3top 24.
w A leaf spring 26 is attached to the sliding member at 28 and its ends are anchored at 30. In the position shown in Figure 1 the spring is just over centre and serves to maintain the sliding member in the position shown. When a ball enters the orifice, it strikes the strip 18 and this causes an immediate movement of the sliding member, and the spring then is off-centre in the opposite sense and serves to accelerate the sliding action of the member 20, thereby trapping the bdll as shown in Figure 2.
When the ball is required to be released, the sliding member may be simply returned to its first position by means of finger pressure against the spring.

Claims (4)

1. A bat for catching balls includes a handle and a head, the head having an aperture of diameter larger than that of the ball to be caught, a strip of flexible material behind the aperture, one end of the strip being firmly attached to the bat and its other end connected to a sliding member which is adapted to slide between a first position in which it is clear of the orifice and a second position in which it at least partially closes the orifice to capture a ball between it and the strip, the movement to the second position being assisted by spring means releasable as the sliding member commences its movement to the second position.
2. The bat according to claim 1 in which the spring is a leaf spring and is just off-centre in the first position of the sliding member, thus serving to retain the sliding member in its first position until a ball strikes the strip thereby causing a first movemE.t of the sliding member, the spring then acting in the opposite sense to cause the sliding member to snap into its second position to hold the ball captive.
3. The bat according to either of the above claims in which the sliding member moves in guides which include stops.
4. A bat substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawings. DATED THIS 22nd DAY OF DECEMBER 1993 OBERINS Attorneys for MARIE LOUIS CLAUDE TALBOT ABSTRACT A bat for playing a game of catch ball has a handle and a head, the head having an aperture of diameter larger than that of the ball to be caught, a strip of flexible material behind the aperture, one end of the strip being firmly attached to the bat and its other end connected to a sliding member which is adapted to slide between a first position in which it is clear of the orifice and a second position in which it at least partially closes the orifice to capture a ball between it and the strip, the movement to the second position being assisted by spring means releasable as the sliding member commences its movement to the second position. The spring is a leaf spring which is just off-centre to maintain the sliding member in the first position but which becomes off-centre in the opposite sense when a ball strikes the flexible strip thereby causing the sliding member to accelerate towards its ball captivating position. :eee e• S S 55•
