2 This invention relates to a barbecue, more particularly to a barbecue which is adaptable to various types of cooking, particularly a multifunctional cooker.

Barbecues are well known and these take many forms. There is the simple barbecue which comprises an open hot plate or grilling bars or mesh on which the food to be cooked is placed. Other barbecues have a lid or the like to cover the cooking plate, and still others have a rotisserie or spit on which the 1 0 meat to be cooked is placed. Then there are the fully enclosed types of barbecues which are commonly called barbecue kettles.

Thus there are a variety of barbecues, but each is virtually limited to one type of cooking process. These known barbecues are either solid fuel or gas fired, 1 5 and often the gas burner heats some form of solid material to simulate a solid fuel fire.

It is an object of this invention to provide a barbecue which is adapted to cook food in any one of a number of selected ways.

Thus there is provided according to one form of the invention a combination 0o barbecue or multifunctional cooker including a base having a gas burner positioned in said base and within a burner cylinder positioned vertically on the base and having apertures in its cylindrical surface to supply combustion air to said burner, said burner cylinder supporting a hot plate, a cooking cover adapted to optionally fit on the hot plate, and a lid adapted to optionally cover the hot plate and the cooking cover if desired.

In order to more fully describe the invention reference will now be made to the accompanying drawing which is an exploded view of the barbecue.

The barbecue includes a dish shaped base 1 supported on removable legs 2.

A gas burner 3 is positioned in the base, the burner preferably being a ring shaped burner. The bottom of the base is provided with a locating ridge 1(a) m&M-WMMM r 2a to centrally locate a burner cylinder 4 which is upstanding from the base. The burner cylinder 4 as shown comprises a metal cylinder into which has been formed a series of apertures or openings formed by slitting the metal cylinder and then pressing the metal inwardly to thus form inwardly directed upwardly opening apertures 5. The lower row of apertures 5 has the openings directed downwardly to thus direct the air into the region of the burner to thus supply 1 0 the air for combustion.

3 The burner cylinder 4 supports a grill plate 6 with an upstanding peripheral rim 6(a) which plate 6 sits on the top of the burner cylinder, the grill plate 6 being located centrally by a plurality of lugs (not shown) extending from the bottom surface of the grill plate 6 to locate within the upper end of the burner cylinder 4. Thus with the grill plate in position, the openings in the burner cylinder allow the escape of the products of combustion from the burner. Thus in use food can be cooked by placing the food directly on the grill plate. There is also provided a wire grill 7 which can be placed on the grill plate, and food can be placed if desired on this wire grill for cooking.

If it is desired to cook a large piece of food such as a roast, whole bird or the like, this can be placed on the wire grill 7 and either a cooking cover or bainmarie 8 or a lid 9 be positioned on the grill plate to cover the food being Scooked.

If the cooking cover or bain-marie 8 is used, this is positioned on the grill plate inside the peripheral rim 6(a) of the grill plate. The cooking cover has on its upper surface a plurality of openings into which cooking containers 10 are positioned. These cooking containers 10 can be used for cooking vegetables or other food as desired. The lid 9 can be positioned over the cooking cover 8, the lid having a depending peripheral flange 11 to fit over the peripheral rim 00 20 of the grill plate.

000 Thus the cooking cover need not be used if not desired, the lid likewise may not be used, of if desired they may both be used.

0 The invention also incorporates means whereby a rotisserie can be used for cooking. Thus a spit 11 can be inserted across the burner cylinder, driven by a battery powered electric motor 12 which has clips for clipping into respective openings in the burner cylinder. If the rotisserie is used, a heat plate 13 can be positioned at the bottom of the burner cylinder directly above the burner, this plate thus becoming radiant with heat to thus assist in the cooking of the food on the spit, and to collect the fat and other juices from the food on the spit 11.

It will be realised that the barbecue can be constructed of any suitable metal, such as stainless steel and/or aluminium. The burner cylinder 4 is preferably stainless steel, and the openings 5 can be formed in any suitable manner, such as by stamping in the flat before being formed into a cylinder. While the

4 burner cylinder is shown as cylindrical, it can be shaped to be a stepped cylinder, or truncated. The number of holes or slits can be varied, and these may only be positioned toward the lower portion, sufficient to supply combustion air to the burner. The other components can either be formed by casting, forming, stamping or spinning.

Thus it will be seen that there is provided according to this invention a combination barbecue or multifunctional cooker which is versatile in use. As noted above there can be cooking by a rotisserie, direct grilling on a hot plate, grilling or cooking on the wire grill roasting on the wire grill while covered by 1 0 either the cooking cover, bain-marie or the lid, and cooking of other food such as vegetables in the cooking containers.

Although one form of the invention has been described in some detail, the invention is not limited thereto but can include variations falling within the spirit and scope of the invention.

Claims (5)

1. A combination barbecue or multi functional cooker comprising in combination a base, a gas burner positioned in said base, a perforated 1 0 burner cylinder positioned over said burner vertically on said base to supply combustion air to said burner, said burner cylinder being so arranged that it supports at its upper end at least one cooking element selected from a spit, a grill plate, a wire grill, a cover or bain-marie supporting smaller cooking containers, and a lid.

2. A combination barbecue or multi functional cooker as defined in claim 1, wherein said spit extends through a pair of opposite perforations, drive means for said spit being releasably attached to one or more of said perforations.

3. A combination barbecue or multi functional cooker as defined in either of the preceding claims, wherein said grill plate is adapted to support the 0 bain-marie, the lid being dimensioned to cover the bain-marie and be supported by the edge of the grill plate. 0

4. A combination barbecue or multi functional cooker as defined in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the wire grill is optionally positioned on the grill plate. 3 0

5. A combination barbecue or multi functional cooker substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated by the accompanying drawings.
