Abstract

The roller consists of a stirrup-shaped holder (4) for the roller, and a handle (1) which is made in two lengthwise sections (2,3) which can clip together when in use and be folded parallel to the lengthwise axis of the holder, e.g. for packaging. The handle and holder are moulded from plastics in one piece with hinges (42,43) for the two handle sections. A projection (44) on the holder engages with two cavities (11) in the handle sections when they are clipped together.

0 Invention Title: SUPPORT DEVICE FOR THE CYLINDRICAL SLEEVE OF A PAINT
ROLLER
The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to us la SUPPORT DEVICE FOR THE CYLINDRICAL SLEEVE OF A PAINT ROLLER The present invention relates to a support device for the cylindrical sleeve of a paint roller.
Known paint rollers are generally of a T-shape and comprise a cylindrical sleeve mounted in free rotation between the sides of a stirrup, in general a bent metallic wire fitted at its end with a handle.
These rollers are very cumbersome, particularly when they are offered for sale on a display where they are usually suspended from a rod by an opening provided at the end of the handle.
*..The present invention aims to remedy this drawback by proposing a support device for paint rollers which, apart from being much less of an encumbrance when offered for sale, also has the o. advantage of having a manufacturing cost and weighing less than existing rollers.
10 The support device of a paint roller according to the present invention is characterized essentially in that it comes entirely from injection moulding of a plastic material and in that the handle is divided lengthwise into two joinable sections articulated on the section intended to support said cylindrical sleeve.
Such a support can be offered for sale with the two joinable sections of the handle positioned 15 as an extension of one another, along the stirrup intended to support the cylindrical handle and parallel thereto, effectively economizing on space on the display stand.
To use such a roller, it is a simple matter of bringing together the two sections of the handle and snap-lock them together, their joining together being known by means known in and of themselves.
The advantages and characteristics of the present invention will emerge more clearly from the following description with reference to the accompanying diagram which represents a nonlimiting embodiment of the invention, in which Figure 1 shows a partial front view of a first embodiment of a device according to the present invention, where the handle is in its two extreme positions, open and shut, 2 Figure 2 shows a side vicw of the samei device with its handle assembled, Figure 3 shows a plan view in an extension of the assembled handle, or this same device.
Figure 4 shiown a front view oif a second embodiment of a device according to the present invcntion.
Figure S shows a front view of thle same device in another configuration.
With reference to these diagrams it can he seen that a cylindrical sleeve support (not illustrated) of a paint roller device* according to the present invention, manufactured by polypropylene type plastic material injection moulding, comprises two distinct parts, namely a handle 1 which is substantially cylindrical and divided into two sermi-cylindrical sections 2 and 3, and a stirrup 4 in the form of a trough comprising at side 40 at each of its extremities fitted with means for attachment of the sleeve.
Handle 1, constituted by the bringing together of both sections 2 and 3, comprises a base of square section accommodating a cavity 11~ of a similarly square form.
Sections 2 and 3 of handle I are joined to stirrup 4 on a square stud 41 positioned at thle centre of stirrup 4 by means of two moulded bridges 42 and 43 respectively, enabling pivoting about 900 of sections 2 and 3 allowing themi to move out of a parallel position to a position perpendicular to stirrup 4 and thus constituting sleeve 1, while joining of both) sections 2 and 3 is brought about by known locking means, not illustrated, A second stud 44 of similarly square section, protruding at the centre of stud 41 and of external dimensions equal to thc internal dimensions of cavity I1I of handle 1, is lightly covered by base 10 of the handle during the bringing together of both sections 2 and 3, consequently reinforcing this joining and maintaining handle 1 on stirrup 4.
Following manufacture handle I Is open and sections 2 and 3 are positioned parallel to stirrup 4, attached thereto by divisible bridges 45, as In Figure 1, such that the support can bc presented for sale suspended on a display stand and taking up less space. with openings 20 arid being made for the purpose of suspension at the end of each of sections 2 and, 3 of handle I.
Furthermore, stirrup 4 comprises two lugs 46 and 47, projecting perpendicularly both to stirrup 4 and to the axis of handle 1, likewise moulded and allowing the roller to be positiot\cd horizontally on thc edge of thc paint can for the purpose of drainage, while the spacing ot .Saicj two lugs 46 and 47 allows them to hc snap-locked onto a can of standard thickness.
With reference to Figures 4 and 5 it is seen that in accordance with a second emhodiment handlc I is constituted by two dissimilar sectio'ns 2' and 3' which can also be joined together by snap-locking.
Sections 2' and 3' are joined to stirrup 4 so as to bc ahle to pivot, in the same manner as in the preceding embodiment, that is, by means of bridges 42 and 43 respctively.
At its extremity section 2' eomprises a tubular part 21 allowing adaptation of an extension piece, not illustrated, which enables a ceiling, for example. to he painted.
At their ends sections 2' and 3' each comprise bridges 42 and 43 respectively, and perpcndicularly thercto a flat rib 22 and 32 respectivcly which constitute handle I and are intended to he engaged in a socket 46 realized longitudinally in stud 41.
In combination with socket 46 flat ribs 22 and 32 help to reinforce joining of handle I to stirrup 4 in the direction of use of the roller, such as perpcndicularly to these flat ribs 22 and 32.
It should bc noted that each of sections 2' and 3' may comprise several parallel flat rib~s 22, .32 intended to be engaged in several parallel sockets 46 realized in stud 41.
The device according to the present invention offers advantages other than its economy of space when on display.
Firstly, the trough shape of stirrup 4 effectively prevents paint from spreading onto handle 1 and then onto the hand of the user, Secondly, because the device according to the present invention is manufactured wholly from plastic material, thcrc is no danger to the uscr of clectrocution, as is the case for conventional paint rollers when used in the vicinity of a source of electrical current.
