Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION For a Standard Patent
ORIGINAL
e s Name of Applicant: Actual Inventor(s): ACUE GROUP PTY LTD ANTHONY CECIL EAGLETON Address for Service: WRAY ASSOCIATES, Primary Industry House, 239 Adelaide Terrace, Perth, Western Australia, 6000.
Attorney code: WR Invention Title: "SEALED JUNCTION" Details of Associated Provisional Application: No: PL9413 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me:- o 1 -r I 2 4 A.
THIS INVENTION relates to sealed ventilating tubing and a method of forming sealed ventilating tubing.
It has been a common practice to form ventilation tubing from flexible sheet material which is substantially impervious to airflow. One difficulty that has been encountered in relation to such tubing however, is that it is not totally impervious to airflow since there can be a significant amount of airflow through the sewn interconnections between the various layers of fabric or sheet material.
It is an object of this invention to provide a ventilating tubing where the interconnection between layers of sheet material are sealed.
Accordingly the invention resides in ventilation tubing formed of flexible sheet material, the sheet material incorporating at least one junction of said sheet material, the junction comprising at least two layers of said sheet material having their edges overlapping and being interconnected by at least one line of stitching, wherein the opposed faces of the layers in the region of the stitching are further treated such that the junction is 25 rendered to be substantially impervious.
According to a preferred form of the invention, the further treatment comprises application of a sealing medium. The sealing medium may be applied as a layer along the stitch line to close the apertures formed at the junction in the sheet material along the stitch line.
e Alternatively, the sealing medium may be applied as a layer between the layers of sheet material at the junction in the sheet material.

I
According to another preferred form the layer of sealing mediumn is applied to at least one of the exterior faces of the sheet material.
It should be appreciated that the sealing medium need not be applied as a layer. Thus in a further preferred form the sealing medium may be applied as a strip of material.
The strip of sealing medium may be formed of a flexible non-rigid material such as plastics or an elastomeric composition.
According to another preferred form of the invention, the strip of sealing medium is applied by welding. Thus in a preferred form the sealing medium is welded to at least one of the external faces of the sheet material over the stitch line to seal the junction.
Alternatively the further treatment comprises welding the layers of sheet material together in the region of the junction.
20 The invention will be more fully understood in the light of the following description of two specific embodiments. The description is made with reference to the accompanying drawings of which:- Figure 1 is a schematic representation of a sewn junction according to the first embodiment.
eoe Figure 2 is a schematic representation of a sewn S"junction according to the second embodiment.
As shown in Figure 1 the first embodiment comprises twe layers of sheet material 11 and 12 which are interconnected at a sewn junction 13. The sheet material may comprise a woven fabric which is plastic coated to render the fabric impervious, or alternatively may comprise a reinforced plastics sheeting. The sewn junction 13 is formed by a pair of parallel stitch lines 14 and 15 of conventional In the region of the sewn junction 13 the 4 between the two layers of fabric 11 and 12 by the stitch lines and forms a seal between the two layers of fabric 11 and 13 in the region of the stitch lines.
As shown in Figure 2 the second embodiment comprises two layers of sheet material 111 and 112 which are interconnected at a sewn junction 113. As is the case of the first embodiment the sheet material may comprise a woven fabric which is plastic coated to render the fabric impervious, or alternatively may comprise a reinforced plastics sheeting.
The sewn junction 113 is formed by a pair of parallel stitch lines 114 and 115 of conventional form. To seal the sewn junction 113, a strip of flexible plastics material 116 is applied over the stitch line 114 and 115 and is welded to the sheet material. The strip is formed of a plastics material 15 which is capable of being welded to the sheet material.
Subsequent to forming the stitched lines at the sewn junction 113 the sealing strip is welded in position to the one face of the sheet material 111 over the stitch lines and forms a seal in the region of the stitch lines.
It should be appreciated that the scope of the present invention need not be limited to the particular scope of the embodiment described above.
