[32] Application Date 9 January 1996 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us:- 5815 A Multi-Point Lock Technical Field The present invention relates to multi-point locks.
Background of the Invention Multi-point locks are locks which employ a central lock assembly usually equipped with a tongue, which can be deadlocked, and in some instances with a latch tongue. Associated with the central lock assembly is one or more remote assemblies each provided with a tongue which moves in unison with the deadlock mechanism.
Previously known multi-lock assemblies have been difficult to install due to the necessity to accurately locate the remote assemblies relative to the central assembly.
This difficulty often results in problems in operation if the remote assemblies are not accurately located. The accuracy required in respect of location also results ii additional time in respect of installation. This greatly increases the cost of installation.
A further problem associated with multi-point locks, and locks generally which 1 5 employ a linearly movable tongue, is that the main lock assembly can be moved relative S. to the associated door jam to thereby move the lock tongue from locking engagement therewith.
It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate at least one of the above disadvantages.
oo0.
Summary of the Invention There is firstly disclosed herein a multi-point lock comprising: a main lock assembly including a first lock tongue movable between an S extended position and a retracted position; 0 a remote lock assembly including a second lock tongue which is movable between an extended position and a retracted position, and an operating means to move the second lock tongue; 0o connection means extending between the main lock assembly and the remote lock assembly so that operation of the main lock assembly causes movement of the second lock tongue via said operating means, said connection means including an elongated rod extending between said main lock assembly and said operating mineans, and securing means attaching the operating means to the rod at a desired location longitudinally of the rod so that the connection means can accommodate variations in the installation displacement between the main lock assembly and the remote lock assembly.
Brief Description of the Drawing A preferred form of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, which schematically depicts in part exploded perspective view a multi-point lock.
*e o a.* a e Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiment In the accompanying drawings there is schematically depicted a multi-point lock 10. The multi-point lock 10 includes a main lock assembly 11 and one or remote lock assemblies 12 (A and B).
The main lock assembly 11 includes a housing 13 which supports a lock tongue 14. The tongue 14 is movable between a retracted position (as depicted) and an extended position engaging a door jamb to prevent movement of the door with which the multi-point lock 10 is associated. In this regard it should be appreciated that in this embodiment the lock tongue 14 is linearly movable and therefor the door pivots between its open and closed positions. The lock tongue 14 could also be pivotally movable and the main lock assembly 11 may include a latch tongue.
Associated with the tongue 14 is a rotatably mounted arm 15 which would be associated with a shaft passing through a passage 16, which shaft would extend to a handle so that an operator by turning the handle can move the tongue 14 between its *oo retracted and extended positions.
e Also associated with the lock tongue 14 is a deadlock member 17 which engages the lock tongue 14 to remain in its extended position. The deadlock member 17 is moved by a pivotally mounted arm 18 associated with a lever or handle mounted externally on the door for rotation by a user. The user by causing rotation of the arm 18 would move the deadlock member 17 into and out of engagement with the lock S:tongue 14. In addition to or as a replacement to the pivotally mounted arm 18, there is provided a lock cylinder 19. The lock cylinder 19 is provided with an arm 20, which upon the use of a key, caused to move angularly about the longitudinal axis of the lock cylinder to move the deadlock member 17 into and out of engagement with the lock tongue 14.
The or each remote lock assembly 12 includes a body 21 which movably supports a lock tongue 22. In this embodiment, the lock 21 is pivotally mounted.
However, it should be appreciated that a linearly movable lock tongue 22 may be also used. In this embodiment the tongue 21 has a hook portion 23 which engages with the associated door jamb to prevent separation of the door edge from the door jamb in the plane of the door. The tongue member 23 pivots about an axle 24.
Mounted within the body 21 for linear movement is a clamp member 25. The clamp member 25 is provided with rack gears 26 which meshingly engage a pinion gear 27. The pinion gear 27 rotates about a shaft 28. The pinion gear 28 meshingly engages teeth 29 formed on the tongue 22. Linear movement of the clamp member causes angular movement of the tongue 23 between its retracted position (as illustrated) and its extended position in which it would engage the associated door jamb.
The clamp member 25 is part of a connection assembly 30 which further includes a clamp member 31 movably mounted in the body 13. Extending between the [N:\LIBTT]00794:exc 4 clamp members 25 and 31 is a metal rod 32. Each clamp member 25 and 31 is provided with a passage, such as the passage 33 in the clamp member 31, into which there is threadably engaged a "grub" screw. Each grub screw engages the rods 32 to clamp the respective clamp member 25 or 31 to a selected position along the rod 32.
The grub screws would be accessible through apertures 34 in end plates 35 and 36.
An operating mechanism, such as the pivotally mounted lever 18, would includes a projection 37 to cause linear movement of the clamp member 31. This linear movement of the clamp member 31, via the rod 32, causes linear movement of the clamp member 25 and therefore pivoting of the tongue 22. Accordingly, the tongue 22 moves into and out of engagement with the associated door jamb in unison with the deadlock member 17. Accordingly when the tongue 14 is the or each tongue 22 is engaged with the associated door jamb.
It should be appreciated that by using the clamp members 25 and 31 and the rod 32, the remote lock assemblies 12A and 12B may be located at any desired position S 15 relative to the lock assembly 11. The lock assembly 11 need only be located in the *door together with the remote lock assemblies 12 and then the grub screws engaged in clamping position with respect to the rod 32. Since the grub screws can engage at any desired position along the rod 32, location of the remote lock assemblies 12 is relatively easy.
