Description

HAND-HELD
URINAL
This invention relates to a urinal, and more particularly to a hand-held urinal.
According to the invention there is provided a hand-held urinal comprising: a receptacle which is of a relatively stiff material, the receptacle having a rim and being of elongate configuration, having opposite front and rear ends; and io an upper part which is of a relatively soft material and fits removably on the rim, the upper part being anatomically shaped so that, when the urinal is held in place on a person's body, the upper part forms a liquid-tight seal around the person's urinary orifice; the receptacle having an integrally formed connector tube projecting from the outside thereof, and a drain opening formed by the lumen of the connector tube, the connector tube being inclined towards one of the ends of the receptacle; the upper part being of elongate configuration, comprising a peripherally extending portion having opposite sides and opposite ends, and a wall extending inwardly from one of the ends thereof and terminating in an edge which extends from one of the sides thereof Sto the other; and the configuration of the receptacle and the rim being such that the upper part fits reversibly on the rim, that is to say with one end of the peripherally 30 extending portion being at either one or the other end of the receptacle.
The wall may be thickened in the region of said edge.
The peripherally extending portion may have a ,H 5 groove in the underside thereof, the rim being entered in the groove.
-2- The rim may have a downwardly depending lip, the peripherally extending portion curling around the lip.
The receptacle may be an injection moulded plastics component.
The upper part may be of an elastomeric material such as, for example, silicone rubber.
The invention will now be described in more detail, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of a hand-held urinal in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a section of the urinal on II-II in Figure 3, with the two component parts thereof shown separated; and Figure 4 is a plan view of the urinal.
Referring now to the drawings in more detail, reference numeral 10 generally indicates a hand-held urinal which comprises two component parts, namely a receptacle 12 which is of a relatively stiff plastics material, and an upper part 14 which is of a relatively *o .o V% S ooo WO 97/11631 PCT/US96/15389 soft elastomeric materia.
The receptacle 12 has a thickened rim 3.6.
The rim 16 and the upper part 14 Are ofE elongate configuration, having a front end 18 and a rear end Projecting from the-outside of the receptacle 12 there is a short connector tube 22 whose lumen 24 forms a drain opening for-the receptacle. In F'igure I the ube 22 is :shown to have a f lexible drain tube 26 (drawn in-docted lines) fitted-thereto..
The receptacle 12,' including the connector tube..22, is .a one-piece injection' moulded component, of, f or example, polyethylene. The upper part 14 is of an elastomeric material- such asl for'examrple, silicone rubber.
The upper part 14 comprises, a peripherally extending portion 28 which has a groove 30 in the underside thereof, the rim 1-6 of ,tbhe receptacle being, when the parts are assembled, entered in the groove.it will be seen that the rim. has a downwardly depending -lip 312, the upper part 14 having a portion 34 which when the parts are assembled,.cu~rs.around the lip- This securely holds the upper.par(1. 14 .in position on the receptacle 12. Theipperpar.,- 14 -further comprises a wall 3 6 which:.extends... from.~ ones Of:, the opposite ends thereof across the opening defined! by the perip'i1eraXly extending portio. to-..an edge. 1~8i j.hich .extends fromr~ one of the opposite ,sides-o.of the peri'pherally extendins portion to the. other The upper o0arv- 0- therefore partly closes the. top. of the receptacle 12.- As will be seen in the drawiLngs,;- the wall 361 is thickened in the region -of the, edge 38',p the. upper srfare of the thickened edge portion-i merginq wih. the. upper surface of the periphdrally ebtending por :Lon .28 where they meet.
The 4upoer prt 14,1W1-1 nor~ally be f i tt-ed SO that the wall 36! .is az-the zreAr iq 20 of the receptacle. The. upper 'Part l4...iLsp jhowever, reversible.
WO 97/11631 PCTIUS96/5389 -4- In other words,. it canif .deesired, be fitted so that the wall 36 is at thef@ront endIll8 -of the receptacle.
In use,. the urinal 10 is .held in place on: the body of a person, the peripherally .extending portion 28 and the thickened edge 38 forming; a liquid-tight seal around the urinary orifice of the person. To this end the upper part. 14 has a suitable anatomical shape. The urinal is suitable for both 'male. and female persons.
The use will be such that the wall 36 :is in a position in which it prevents .spillage- of: urine from the receptacle.
The drain tube 26 cabi bi :used to direct urine that drains from- the ,receptacle 12 into, for example, a toilet bowl in cases where the device is used by persons in a public toilet, if they want to avoid physical contact with the facilities in the public toilet. In the case of bed-ridden patients or patients who are otherwise partially or totally immobilised, the drain tube 26 can be used to lead the urine that drains 'from the receptacle into a catheter bag or other container. The urinal can thus be used in place of a bed pan and bottle or catheter ,for urinary relief of immobilised patients,', with a minimum of assistance being required. It can also conveniently be used for female urinary sampling.
The upper part 14 can readily be removed from the receptacle 12 and replaced, ,and the receptacle can be washed. This will make the .urinal particularly hygienic in its use.
