"AN ATTACHMENT SYSTEM" INVENTION TITLE: DETAILS OF ASSOCIATED PROVISIONAL APPLICATION NO'S: Australian Provisional Patent Application Number P07655 filed on July 2, 1997.
The following Statement is a full description of this invention including the best method of performing it known to me/us: 2
TITLE
"An Attachment System" BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to an attachment system for attaching a bib to a fishing lure.
FIELD OF THE INVENTION The known method of attaching a bib to a fishing lure employs the use of either a glue or a solvent. However, this provides a problem in that the bib and/or a portion of the lure to which the bib is attached may be made brittle by the glue or the solvent.
I0 The present invention seeks to overcome amongst other things the above mentioned problem.
SUMMARY OF THE PRESENT INVENTION 0 In accordance with one aspect of the present invention there is provided an attachment i system for attaching a bib to a fishing lure, wherein the bib is provided with a recess and 5 the lure is provided with a recess, the recess of the bib and the recess of the lure defining an aperture when the bib is engaged with the lure, and wherein a bar member is arranged to be engageable in the aperture so as to restrain disengagement of the bib from the lure.
20 BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS o The present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fishing lure and a bib the lure and the bib including an attachment system in accordance with the present invention; Figure 2 is a perspective view of the lure and the bib shown in Figure 1 together with a 3 bar member of the attachment system in accordance with the present invention, with the lure and the bib in a separated condition; Figure 3 is a perspective view of the bar member shown in Figure 2; Figure 4 is a cross-sectional perspective view of the lure taken along the line A-A of Figure 2 in the direction of the arrows; Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view of the lure taken along the line A-A of Figure 2 in the direction of the arrows, with the bib of Figures 2 and 3 shown partially inserted within a longitudinal slot of the lure.
Figure 6 is a cross-sectional view of the lure, the bib and the bar member taken along the line C-C of Figure 1 in the direction of the arrows, with the bib and the lure in an attached condition; and :Figure 7 is a cross-sectional view of the lure, the bib and the bar member taken along the :idline B-B of Figure 1 in the direction of the arrows, with the bib and the lure in an attached condition.
15 DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION Referring to Figure 1, there is shown a fishing lure 12 and a bib 14, the lure 12 and the bib *oSm 14 being provided with an attachment system which facilitates attachment of the bib 14 to the lure 12. The attachment system includes an aperture 15 defined by respective surfaces of the lure 12 and the bib 14 when the lure 12 is engaged with the bib 14, and an elongate bar member 16 receivable in the aperture The lure 12 and the bib 14 are shown in a separated condition in Figure 2. The bib 14 includes a longitudinal slot 22 and first and second recesses 26 and 27 respectively disposed on opposite sides of the longitudinal slot 22. The bib 14 may also include an attachment hole 24 spaced from the longitudinal slot 22. The attachment hole 24 allows 4 the lure 12 to be attached to a fishing line in use. The bib 14 is a substantially arch shaped member with the attachment hole24 located substantially in the centre of the arch. The longitudinal slot 22 extends inwardly from a base surface 21 of the arch. The first and second recesses 26, 27 are located adjacent the base surface 21 and extend in a direction substantially parallel to the base surface 21. The bib 14 has a generally arch shaped side surface 23, an upper plane surface 25 and a lower plane surface 29. The first and second recesses 26, 27 extend inwardly of the bib 14 from the lower plane surface 29.
The lure 12 includes a lure end portion 13. At the lure end portion 13, a receiving slot 18 is provided which is of complementary shape to a bib end portion 11 so that the bib end portion 11 is receivable in the receiving slot 18. The receiving slot 18 includes a third recess 20 which is integral with the slot 18 and which extends inwardly of the lure 12.
The bar member 16 is shown in more detail in Figure 3. The bar member 16 has a first elongate side surface 17, a second elongate side surface 19 and an elongate top surface 23. A locking means 32 is located on the top surface 23, the locking means 32 extending S 15 outwardly of the bar member 16 in the form of a protrusion. The locking means 32 may, for example, be formed as a result of the bar member 16 being joined to a sprue during i tr oo°.
moulding of the bar member 16. In this embodiment, the locking means 32 is formed substantially centrally of longitudinal ends of the bar member 16. However, it will be appreciated that the locking means 32 could be provided at any location between 0*@q longitudinal ends of the bar member 16.
The lure end portion 13 is shown in more detail in Figure 4. The third recess 20 includes a receiving portion 30 which extends from surfaces 3 1, 33, 35 of the third recess deeper into the lure 12 than the remainder of the third recess The receiving slot 18 is provided with two lateral movement restraining means 28 in the form of connecting members which cross the slot 18 as shown. In this instance, a restraining means 28 is located on either side of the third recess 20. Each of the restraining means 28 is of a thickness corresponding to the width of the longitudinal slot 22. so that the longitudinal slot 22 engages tightly with the restraining means 28 when the bib 14 is positioned in the receiving slot 18 of the lure 12. The restraining means 28 serve to restrain the bib 14 from moving laterally relative to the lure 12 when the bib 14 is engaged with the lure 12.
As shown in Figure 5, in use, the bib end portion 11 of the bib 14 is introduced into the receiving slot 18 such that the longitudinal slot 22 engages with restraining means 28.
When the-first and second recesses 26, 27 are aligned with the third recess 20, the first and second recesses 26, 27 and the third recess 20 combine to form the aperture 15 as best shown in Figure 6.
*i The lure 12 and the bib 14 are shown in an attached condition in Figures 6 and 7. The bib end portion 11 of the bib 14 is inserted into the receiving slot 18 of the lure 12. The first 15 and second recesses 26, 27 and the third recess 20 define the aperture 15. The bar t member 16 is located within the aperture 15 such that surfaces of the first, second and *third recesses 26, 27 and 20 engage with the bar member 16 to secure the bib 14 in :position. In this way, the bib 14 is restrained from being withdrawn from the receiving slot 18 of the lure 12.
20 The locking means 32 fits within the receiving portion 30 such that the bar member 16 is locked in position by the locking means 32, the locking means 32 engaging with the receiving portion 30 so as to thereby prevent the bar member 16 from being readily removed from the aperture 15. However, it will be appreciated that the receiving portion is not an essential requirement to achieve adequate restraining of the bar member 16 6 in the aperture 15. Effective restraining of the bar member 16 may also be achieved without the receiving portion 30 by other means for example by virtue of friction between the locating means 32 and a surface of the third recess The manner of use and operation of the present invention will now be described.
To attach the bib 14 to the fishing lure 12, the bib end portion 11 is inserted into the receiving slot 18 of the lure 12. As a result, the longitudinal slot 22 engages with the restraining means 28 thereby preventing lateral movement of the bib 14 relative to the lure 12. When the bib 14 is fully inserted into the receiving slot 18, the first and second recesses 26, 27 and the third recess 20 define the aperture 15. The bar member 16 is 10 inserted into the aperture 15 so that the locking means 32 is forced into the aperture until the locking means 32 engages with the receiving portion 30 and thereby restrains the bar member 16 from being readily removed from the aperture 15. The side surfaces 17 and 19 of the bar member 16 engage with the sides of the first, second and third recesses 26, 27 and 20 to prevent the bib 14 from being withdrawn from the lure 12.
15 It should be understood to be within the scope of the invention if the bib and the lure are S.arranged such that the aperture 15 is positioned either upwardly or downwardly of the bib 14.
":"'"Further, it should also be understood to be within the scope of the invention that more than one bar member 16 or more than one locking means 32 may be provided.
Further, it should also be understood that the locking means 32 may be located at any position between opposite longitudinal ends of the bar member 16 or that a bar member 16 may be provided without a locking means 32, the important aspect being that the bar member 16 is engageable with the aperture, either by cooperation between a locking means 32 and a receiving portion 30, or by friction between sides of the bar member 16 7 and sides of the aperture 15, so as to restrain withdrawal of the bar member 16 from the aperture Typically, the lure of the present invention is formed of plastics material.
Modifications and variations as would be apparent to a skilled addressee are deemed to be within the scope of the present invention.
