[32] Application Date 26 August 1997 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us:- 5815 -1- A LATCH Technical Field The present invention relates to locks and more particularly but not exclusively to locks having a latch function.
Background of the Invention Although many locks provide a latch function, the mechanisms that provide that function, do not at a reasonable cost provide a means of accurately locating the lock tongue in its retracted or extended position.
Object of the Invention It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate the above disadvantage.
Summary of the Invention There is disclosed herein a lock for a door or window, the lock comprising: a body to be fixed to the door or window; S. 15 a lock tongue member mounted in the body for pivoting movement about an axis to extend generally normal to the door or window, the tongue member including a lock tongue movable between a retracted position in which it is substantially located within the body, and an extended position to engage a door or window surround to retain the door or window closed; 20 operator manipulable means on one side of the body and useable by an operator to cause movement of the tongue between the retracted and extended positions; location means defining the extended and retracted positions of the tongue, the location means including a passage formed in said body, a spring located in said passage, a locating member guidably received in said passage and engaged by said spring so as to be urged toward said tongue member; and wherein said tongue member includes a pair of locating recesses displaced by 900 about said axis to be engaged by the locating member so as to define the retracted and extended positions of the tongue and to aid in retaining the tongue in the retracted or extended position.
Brief Description of the Drawings A preferred form of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure 1 is a schematic front perspective view of a lock; Figure 2 is a rear perspective view of the lock of Figure 1; [N:\LIBTT]01214:PVH Figure 3 is a schematic front parts exploded perspective view of the lock of Figure 1; and Figure 4 is a schematic rear parts exploded perspective view of the lock of Figure 1.
Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiment In the accompanying drawings there is schematically depicted a lock 10. The lock 10 has a body 11 including a base 12 and a handle 13. The body 11 is intended to be attached to a sliding door or window by means of threaded fasteners passing through apertures 14.
Pivotally mounted on the body 11 is a latch tongue member 43 is an assembly including a latch tongue 15. The latch tongue 15 is pivotally movable about an axis 16 between a retracted position in which the tongue 15 is located at least substantially within the body 11, and an extended position as shown in the drawings. In the extended position the tongue 15 engages a striker, door or window surround to retain the door in the closed *1is position.
:y The body 11 is provided with a mounting 17 providing a passage 18 surrounded by a cylindrical surface 19. The surface 19 is coaxial with respect to the axis 16. The mounting 17 is also provided with a passage 20 which receives a spring 21 and a locating .*.."member 22. In this particular embodiment the locating member 22 is spherical. The S: 20 locating member 22 is slidably guided in the passage 20 and is urged by the spring 21 into engagement with the tongue The tongue 15 includes a hook portion 23 extending from a base 24. The tongue member 44 slidably abuts the mounting 17 and is mounted on a shaft 44 which in this embodiment is generally square in transverse cross section.
A latch lever 25 is pivotally mounted on the body 11 by having a cylindrical *shaft 26 slidably engaged with the cylindrical surface 19. The latch lever 25 provides a lever portion 27 on one side of the body 11 and which is gripped by a user to move the tongue 15 between its extended and retracted positions. The lever portion 27 pivots about the axis 16. The shaft 26 has a hollow 28 of square transverse section so as to matingly receive the shaft 24.
The shaft 24 has a threaded aperture 29 aligned with an aperture 30 which passes through the latch lever 25 and through which a threaded fastener 31 passes to engage within the threaded aperture 29. The threaded fastener 31 therefore secures the latch lever 25 and tongue 15 fixed to the body 11.
The tongue member 43 includes a cam 40 having locating apertures 31 and 32, which are displaced by 900 so as to define the two positions of the tongue 15. The apertures 31 and 32 are alignable with and receive the locating member 22 so as to cooperate therewith in defining the two positions of the tongue 15. The aperture 31 IN:\LIBTTIO1214:PVH -3defines the position at which the tongue is in its extended position, while the aperture 32 defines the position at which the tongue 15 is in its retracted position. When the locating member 22 is located in either of the apertures 31 and 32, the tongue 15 is retained in position.
The body 11 is also provided with an abutment surface 33 which engages an abutment surface 34 of the cam 40 to also define the extended position of the tongue A further abutment surface 35 on the body 11 engages a still further abutment surface 36 on the cam 40 to further define the retracted position of the tongue The tongue 15 is reversible so as to accommodate left or right handed use of the lock 10. This is accomplished by having the cam 40 and base 24 provided with square apertures through which the shaft 44 passes. Washers 42 are located on each side of the base 24 also have apertures through which the shaft 24 passes.
A blade passage 37 (of rectangular transverse cross section) extends inwardly of •the shaft 44 from the head 41 thereof and is adapted to engage the blade of a key operated lock cylinder. Use of an appropriate key causes pivoting of the blade of the lock cylinder and therefore pivoting movement of the tongue SBy disassembling the lock tongue member 43 and rearranging the position of the cam 40, the lock 10 is adaptable to right and left handed use. For example, if the lock as illustrated in the accompanying drawings is moved to the opposite edge of the door or window, the hook portion 23 would need to be rotated about 1800 relative to an axis generally normal to the axis 16 and relative to the cam member 40. The same operation would also enable the lock 10 to be mounted on the opposite side of the door. Also by rotating the cam member 40 through 900, operation of the lever 27 can be adjusted so that pivoting movement downward moves the tongue 15 to the retracted position, should the 25 lock 10 be required to be placed on the opposite side of the door or alternatively moved to the opposite edge of the door.
