Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR A STANDARD PATENT
ORIGINAL
o., .Name of Applicant: BBS GROUP PTY LTD Name of inventor: NIGEL DAVID BENSON Address for Service: COLLISON CO., 117 King William Street, Adelaide, S.A. 5000 Invention Title: WALL CAVITY BARRIER Details of Associated Provisional Applications: Patent Application No. PP4017 Dated 10th June 1998 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to us: including the best method of performing it known to us: J.0/ J. k-WLL1I UIN LU HJJLHII t IIJd U i U- -:P NU. bUU yLJS 2 This invention relates to a wall cavity barrier, more fire or smoke passing along a wall cavity.
In building constructions, brick buildings are often of double brick construction, comprising an outer b spaced inwardly thereof an internal brickwork thus walls. The two walls are tied together with spaced the ties being embedded in the mortar between ad respective brick walls.
.O
S. However in many buildings two or more individual 10 one building, and for fire safety purposes, the divid premises should extend across the wall cavity fron S" the outer face brickwork. This is to ensure that if th premises, the fire and smoke is retarded or preven adjacent premises. In addition, this dividing wall sh 15 premises from fire and smoke, extend from the cei However in many constructions of buildings, partic townhouses and the like where individual premises building, the isolation of individual premises from a, occurred particularly through the cavity wall. Instan one premise has spread to adjacent premises throi omission of the extension of the internal wall throuf Thus in those building constructions in which the cA or smoke barriers due to the omission of the interni cavity, it is an object of this invention to provide for and/or fire barrier in the cavity wall.
?L
At r particularly to the prevention of onstructed with the outer walls ick wall, the face brickwork, and orming the cavity between the es extending across the cavity, kcent bricks of both of the remises are constructed in the ng wall of two adjacent the internal wall or brickwork to ire is a fire in one of the ed from spreading to the >uld, in order to isolate the two ng line to the roof line.
lady domestic flats, units, are constructed in the one jacent premises has not es are known where a fire in gh the cavity wall due to the h the wall cavity.

3 A further object of the invention is to provide a retr( into the cavity wall which effectively seals between Thus there is provided according to this invention, and/or fire barrier in a cavity wall, such method inc flexible longitudinal container down the cavity betw container with an expanding fire retardant material with the respective walls.
Preferably also the method includes the step of prc opposite sides of the container facing the respectiv 10 application of heat thereto the strips will expand to to effectively prevent the passage of smoke or fire Also there is provided according to the invention a a container or sleeve to be positioned in the cavity retardant barrier of expanding mortar to be insertec whereby said container or sleeve is expanded to b, walls of the cavity wall.
Additionally it is preferred that the container or slee and has on opposite sides in contact with the respE intumescent strip which, when on subject of heat, v container or sleeve against the respective walls of 1 In order to more fully describe the invention referer accompanying drawing which shows one form of tt The drawing shows one form of the invention, porti broken away to more clearly illustrate the invention -fitting fire and/or smoke barrier the two walls of the cavity wall.
Smethod of providing a smoke iding the step of inserting a .en the walls and filling the to bring the container in contact viding an intumescent strip on 3 walls so that on the eal against the respective walls ?ast the barrier.
ire retardant barrier comprising vall, and an expanding fire in said container or sleeve, in contact with the respective ie be fibreglass construction, ctive walls of the cavity walls an ill expand to thus seal the ie cavity wall.
ce will now be made to the Sinvention n of a wall and barrier being The wall comprises an outer 1 r 10/18/deul W-D3j LULLIbUN LU HUDLHIUL 02bUOS(tJJ N0.608 L005 a between. A smoke and/or fire 3A facing brick wall, an inner wall 2 and a cavity 3 ther barrier 4 is positioned between the walls 1 and 2.
In this embodiment the fire barrier 4 comprises a fil is positioned between the walls 1 and 2, to extend bottom, the sleeve being lowered or dropped from reglass cloth sleeve 5 which rom the top of the walls to the he top of the 9 O O 9 9 g o oo ld -1 I 4 wall.
Before the sleeve 5 is positioned, the facing walls 1 and 2 are treated by a cleaning tool to remove any protruding pieces of mortar which may be present from the laying of the bricks during the construction of the respective walls.
The sleeve is preferably dropped from the top of the cavity and straightened by a tube or tool inside the sleeve, and then the sleeve is then filled with a fire rated expanding mortar 6 by pouring from the top, care being taken that the sleeve is completely filled with no air bubbles. The mortar expands on setting and will expand sufficiently to cause the wall of the sleeve to be pushed into 1 0 contact with the respective walls and fill most voids or undulations in the walls and when set will be held in place as it will key itself into the undulations and voids of the brickwork and mortar of the walls. It will be noted that after setting of the mortar, it may be necessary to top up the mortar to ensure that it meets the underside of the roof cladding or the top of the brickwork as required.
1 5 Preferably there is provided down each side of the sleeve a strip of intumescent material 7 facing the respective walls. This material is provided so that when heated in the event of a fire this intumescent material expands to seal any of the voids and spaces not sealed by the expanding mortar, to thus virtually completely seal against the respective walls to thus provide a smoke S. 2 0 and fire seal to prevent any passage of smoke or fire past the barrier.
The intumescent material may be any of the known and available intumescent strips, tapes or wraps.
While the invention is designed as a fire barrier, it also acts as an acoustic barrier. However in order to be an effective acoustic barrier, it is preferred that 2 5 strips of resilient material be positioned on the sleeve, so that when the sleeve is filled with the expanding concrete, the sleeve is acoustically sealed to the opposite walls.
While the sleeve has been described as fibreglass sleeve, other materials can be used, such as a thin aluminium material or even sheet metal. It is 3 0 preferred however that the material be sufficiently flexible so that on expansion of the mortar, the material will deflect into the voids and undulations of the respective walls. While an expanding fire rated mortar is used, it will be realised that any fire rated material can be used as long as it will sufficiently deflect the sleeve to substantially enter the voids and undulations of the walls.
While one embodiment of the invention has been described in some detail it will be realised that the invention is not to be limited thereto but can include variations and modifications falling within the spirit and scope of the invention.
