[323 Application Date 3 March 1999 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us:- 5815 A SHEARING HANDPIECE Technical Field The present invention relates to a shearing handpiece and more particularly the comb and clamp plate employed therein.

Background of the Invention Shearing handpieces include a body (handle) upon which there is mounted a comb. A cut is pivotally oscillated across the comb to cut the fleece. The comb is attached to an under-surface of the body by means of a pair of threaded fasteners, the heads of which project below the comb.

Difficulty is encountered in correctly orienting the comb relative to the cutter.

Object of the Invention 15 It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate the above disadvantages.

Summary of the Invention There is disclosed herein a comb assembly to be mounted on a body of a handpiece to cut hair, said assembly having: a comb having an alignment recess; a clamp plate having a projection received within said recess but having a clearance with respect thereto to provide for adjustment of the comb relative to the 0 clamp plate, the clamp plate being adapted to secure the comb to the body; a threaded member having a shaft which passes through the clamp plate to threadably engage with the body so that upon tensioning of the threaded member, the comb is clamped to the body by the clamp plate; and wherein the comb and clamp plate have markings to aid in positioning of the comb relative to the clamp plate, and therefor an associated cutter.

Brief Description of the Drawings Preferred forms of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure 1 is a schematic bottom plan view of the leading portion of a shearing handpiece with a comb secured thereto by means of a clamp plate; Figure 2 is a schematic bottom plan view of the leading portion of a shearing handpiece, with a further comb and clamp plate secured thereto; and IN:\LIBTTJOI 630:gmm:lam Figure 3 is a schematic top plan view of the comb of Figures 1 and 2.

Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiments In the accompanying drawings there is schematically depicted the leading portion 10 of a shearing handpiece (handle). The portion 10 has a threaded aperture which receives the threaded extremity of a threaded fastener 11. The fastener 11 is tensioned in order to hold the comb 12 clamp to the portion 10, via a clamp plate 13.

The clamp plate 13 has a projection 14 which is received within a recess 15 in the comb 12. The recess 15 has parallel sides 16 terminating with an arcuate section 17. The projection 14 has parallel sides 18 and an arcuate leading surface 19. A clearance is provided between the sides 16 and 18 as well as the section 17 relative to the surface 19. Accordingly, prior to being clamped into position, the comb 12 may be moved to adjust the "lead" and "throw" of the comb 12 relative to the cutter.

The projection 18 is also received within a slot formed in the portion 10 to maintain the orientation of the plate 13.

The under-surface of the comb 12 is provided with markings 21 and further markings 22 which are positioned adjacent markings 23 and 24 so that a user may adjust the "lead" and "throw" of the comb 12 relative to the cutter.

In the embodiment of Figure 2, the markings 22 and 24 are replaced with markings 25 which are selectively aligned with the longitudinal edges 26 of the clamp plate 13.

In the embodiment of Figures 1 and 2, the markings 22 and 25 are of first set, with the markings 22 and 25 extending generally in the direction of extension of the teeth of the comb. The markings 21 are of second set, and extend generally normal to 25 the first set.

Claims

1. A comb assembly to be mounted on a body of a handpiece to cut hair, said assembly having: a comb having an alignment recess; a clamp plate having a projection received within said recess but having a clearance with respect thereto to provide for adjustment of the comb relative to the clamp plate, the clamp plate being adapted to secure the comb to the body; a threaded member having a shaft which passes through the clamp plate to threadably engage with the body so that upon tensioning of the threaded member, the comb is clamped to the body by the clamp plate; and wherein the comb and clamp plate have markings to aid in positioning of the comb relative to the clamp plate, and therefor an associated cutter. a The comb assembly of claim 1 wherein said markings include a first S•iand a second set of markings, said first markings extending in a direction generally parallel to the general direction of extension of the teeth on the comb, and said second set of markings extend generally normal to said first set of markings.

3. The comb assembly of claim 2 wherein said clamp plate includes a •first marking to be aligned with said first set, and a second marking to be aligned with said second set. 20 4. The comb assembly of claim 2, wherein said clamp assembly has a *ooo longitudinal edge to be aligned with said first set, and a marking to be aligned with said second set.
