COMPLETE SPECIFICATION STANDARD PATENT LAMINATED WINDSCREEN CUTTER
S.
oo...
S
The following statement is a full description of this invention Including the best method of performing it known to me: LAMINATED WINDSCREEN CUTTER This invention relates to the cutting of laminated glass in vehicle windscreens This manually operated invention has been designed to meet the need for a simple tool for cutting the laminated windscreens used in modern cars.
When injured persons are trapped as a result of a vehicle accident it is often necessary to remove the roof section of the vehicle to allow speedy extrication Laminated windscreens however are bonded to the metal parts of the vehicle and cannot be removed easily; therefore a tool to efficiently cut the glass is required.
Tools currently available include a saw which is manually operated presenting a •go• 10 hazard of flying shards of glass as the saw is pulled back towards the operator.
99 9C Another is an electrically operated sabre saw which requires a starting hole, a source of power, is noisy and produces a fine glass dust as it cuts.
*9oo o99o There is also a danger to patients of saw blades protruding into the vehicle.
A further problem presented by partly damaged windscreens is that the remaining portions are able to move and therefore do not allow effective cutting 9.
with saws.
These problems are overcome by the present invention that incorporates its own starting hole spike and is able to cut intact or floating sections of windscreens.
The unique feature is that the starting hole spike doubles as an instrument for cleaning out any remaining residue that may become lodged between the jaws.
The invention is constructed of hardened steel with tubular handles and plastic or rubber hand grips attached.
To assist with understanding the invention, reference will be made to the accompanying drawings that show an example of the invention.
FIGURE 1. Shows an example of the parts used in this invention FIGURE 2. Shows an example of the view from the top showing the position of parts D and C FIGURE 3. Shows an example of the side view of the assembled parts Referring to FIG 1. It can be seen that part A consists of metal which may be 30 hardened and in the shape shown with a starting spike and a cutting edge and has a pivot hole situated in a radius from each as shown in FIG 3.
This is a main feature of the invention as it allows the handles to be opened and uses the starting hole spike to clean any residue from between parts B.
FIG 1. Also shows spacer D and C, which are welded between two of part B in 35 positions shown in FIG 3. Part C is designed to fit under part A and gives support to the rivet when using the starting hole spike. Part D is welded in position at the ends of part B. The handles E are welded as an extension of parts A and B and may be tubular steel with hand grips attached.
The cutting edge on part A may be smooth or serrated to allow cutting of different materials. i.e. metal panels, plastics, rubber or fibreglass.
FIGURE 2. Shows part D and C and their respective positions between part's B.
FIGURE 3. Shows all parts in their assembled position and with the jaws in a closed position. Also shown is the rivet that consists of stainless steel.
FIGURE 4. Shows the jaws in the fully open cleaning position
