Description

MORTICE LOCK Technical Field The present invention relates to mortice locks and more particularly, but not exclusively, to mortice locks employed in prison cell doors.
Background of the Invention Mortice locks provided for prison cell doors are frequently complex and therefore expensive relative to the functions they need to perform. Still further, they frequently do not provide all the functions necessary particularly in regard to warder supervised egress.
Object of the Invention It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate the above disadvantages.
Summary of the Invention There is disclosed herein a lock having: a lock body; a lock tongue mounted in the body for linear movement between an extended position projecting from within the body and a retracted position at least substantially S: contained within the body; a handle operated hub member pivotally mounted in the body for movement t.ee: about an axis generally normal to the direction of movement of the tongue, and operable 25 to engage the tongue to move the tongue between the extended and retracted positions thereof by angular movement of the hub member about said axis; a tongue retaining member pivotally mounted in the body for pivotal movement between a first and a second position, the retaining member when in the first position •engaging the tongue to retain the tongue in the extended position thereof while in the 30 second position permitting movement of the tongue between the two tongue positions; ~a slide movably mounted in the body for linear movement between a first go position and a second position, the slide being engagable by the hub member to prevent angular movement of the hub member to retract the tongue when the slide is in the first [R:\LIBTT]02295.doc:mzh 2 position thereof, and to permit movement of the hub member when the slide is in the second position thereof; and a lock cylinder engagable with the slide to move the slide between the first and second positions thereof, and operable to engage the tongue retaining member to move the tongue retaining member to the second position thereof.
Brief Description of the Drawings A preferred form of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure 1 is a schematic side elevation of a lock for a prison cell door; Figures 2 to 6 are schematic side elevations of the lock of Figure 1, in different working figurations; and Figures 7 and 8 are elevations showing hub discs employed in the lock of Figures 1 to 6.
Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiment In the accompanying drawings there is schematically depicted a lock 10. The lock 10 is preferably a mortice lock, adapted to be located in a recess in an edge of a door.
The lock 10 is operable to engage a striker or door jam to retain the door in a closed position. More particularly the lock 10 is intended for a cell door.
The lock 10 includes a body 11 within which there is slidably mounted a tongue *12. The tongue 12 is linearly movable between a first position extending from within the body 11, the extended position being depicted in Figures 1, 2 and 4. The lock 10 is 0 operable to move the tongue 12 to its retracted position as seen in Figures 3 and 5 in 25 which the tongue 12 is at least (and preferably entirely) located within the body 11.
eo••• S° Extending rearwardly from the tongue 12 are rods 13 which slidably pass through a mounting plate 14 to aid in restraining the tongue 12 to move along a generally linear path.
•ooo Pivotally mounted in the body 11 is a hub member 15 including a central hub 16 30 having a square drive aperture 17 to be engaged by the square drive shaft of a handle.
S: The handle would be provided on the exterior of the door (non cell side of the door).
Mounted on the hub 16 are four hub discs 18 and 19, including a first disc 18 and three subsequent discs 19. The disc 18 is located closest to the body side wall 20. The discs 19 are aligned so as to act in unison. The discs 18 and 19 each have a projection 21 with a [R:\UfBTT102295.doc:mzh face 22 movable into engagement with a plate 23 fixed to the extremity of the rods 13.
When the hub member 15 is rotated clockwise (relative to lock 10 as illustrated) the hub member 15 moves the tongue 12 from its extended position to its retracted position. The disc 18 has a further projection 24 having a face 25 which also engages the plate 23, but moves the tongue 12 from the retracted position to the extended position when the hub member 15 is moved anticlockwise. Each of the discs 18 and 19 is provided with a pair of recesses 26 which are engaged by a bar 52 urged by a spring 53 into engagement with the recesses 26 to define when the hub member 15 is located in a first position at which the tongue 12 is in the extended position, and a second position at which the tongue 12 is in its retracted position.
Mounted for linear sliding movement in the body 11 is a slide 27. The slide 27 moves in a direction generally perpendicular to the general direction of movement of the tongue 12. The slide 27 has a first portion 28 which is engaged by a first projection 29 of an actuator 30 attached to the inner end of a lock cylinder 31. The slide 27 includes a second portion 32 adapted to engage the faces 33 of the discs 19. A central portion 34 of the slide 27 has a locator assembly including a locator member 35 having a pair of recesses 49 which engage a pin 54 to define the two working positions of the slide 27. In one position, the slide 27 is engaged with faces 33, while in its other position the slide 27 is spaced from the discs 18 and 19 so as to not inhibit movement of the hub member In that regard it should be appreciated that the second portion 32 is spaced relative to wall so as not to engage the disc 18 irrespective of what position the slide 27 is located.
The member 35 is urged into engagement with the pin 37 by means of a spring.
Pivotally mounted in the body 11 is a bar 36. More particularly, the bar 36 has an aperture through which pivot pin 37 passes to pivotally mount the bar 36. The bar 36 25 has an extremity 38 engaged with the slide 27 so as to be moved thereby. The slide 27 moves the bar 36 between the position shown in Figures 1 and 3 and the further position shown in Figures 2, 4 and 5. The bar 36 has a face 39 which engages the plate 23 to retain the tongue 12 in the extended position by engaging the plate 23 when the bar 36 is in the position illustrated in Figure 1. The bar 36 has a second face 40 which engages the 30 plate 23 to retain the tongue 12 in the retracted position. This configuration is shown in Soo: Figure 3.
Also pivotally mounted in the body 11 is a deadlock member (tongue retaining member) 41. The deadlock member 41 has an end portion 42 which is positionable to engage a rear portion ofthe tongue 12, to retain the tongue 12 in its extended position.
The deadlock member 41 is pivotally mounted on pin 43 and is engaged by a spring 44 so Sthat the deadlock member 41 is urged to the position as shown in Figure 1. The deadlock member 41 has an arm 45 engaged with a toggle 46. The toggle 46 is pivotally mounted [R:\LIBTT]02295.doc :mzh on pin 37 and has a flange 47 engaged by projection 48 of the actuator 30. When the lock cylinder 31 is rotated anticlockwise, from the position shown in Fig. 4 to the position shown in Fig. 6, the projection 48 engages the toggle flange 47 and moves the toggle 46 from the position shown in Fig. 4 to the position shown in Fig. 6, thereby causing operation of the deadlock member 41 to move the deadlock member 41 to the position shown in Figures 3 and 5 to thereby permit movement of the tongue 12 to its retracted position. The projection 48 will also engage the plate 23 to retract the tongue 12.
The above mentioned cylinder 31 would be located on the same side of the lock as the handle associated with the hub member 15. In operation of the above lock the lock cylinder 31 is actuated to move the slide 27 to a position inhibiting retraction of the tongue 12. The slide 27 engages the faces 33 of the discs 19 so that the projection 24 of the disc 18 is retained in a position preventing retraction of the tongue 12. Still further, the deadlock member 41 also engages the lock 12 while the bar 36 has its face 39 position to engage the plate 23. When the cylinder lock 30 is operated to move the slide 27 to the position shown in Figure 2, the hub member 15 is no longer engaged by the slide 27 and therefore is not prevented by the slide 27 from moving.
Simultaneously the bar 36 is moved to a position permitting movement of the plate 23. The key may now be removed and the handle operated when movement of the tongue 12 is required. Alternatively, further movement of the cylinder 31 moves the projection 48 to a position at which it engages the toggle 46 to thus move the deadlock member 41 to the position shown in Figure 3, so as to permit movement of the tongue 12.
Further rotation of the cylinder 31 will cause the projection 48 to retract the tongue 12 in which case operation of the handle is not required to retract the tongue 12. The projection 48 engages the plate 23 to cause retraction of the tongue 12 when rotation of the cylinder 25 31 is continued. If the cylinder 31 is not used to retract the tongue 12 then the handle is operated to rotate the hub member 15 clockwise. The projection 21 engages the plate 23 to cause movement of the tongue 12 to its retracted position. Opposite movement of the handle moves the tongue 12 to the extended position.
When the tongue 12 is to be retracted by the handle, the projection 50 on the 30 discs 18 and 19 engages the projection 51 of the deadlock member 41, to move the deadlock member 51 from engagement with the tongue 12.
