Description

I
This invention relates to fixed components of exhaust fan canopy apparatus and involves a further improvement in and/or modification of the main invention disclosed and claimed in our standard patent No. 698736 granted 18th February, 1999 from application No. 61873/96 lodged 8th August, 1996.
The present specification incorporates the subject matter disclosed illustrated and claimed in our patent No. 698736 by cross reference.
Apparatus of the main invention disclosed illustrated and claimed in the specification of our patent 698736 is vertical-discharge, exhaust canopy fan apparatus for upwardly discharging a stream of hot gases and fumes from the canopy which has an outer housing and an inner housing, the outer housing forms a flue extension, the inner housing forms a cowling for an electric motor of a motor exhaust/fan unit for forced exhausting of the stream of hot gases and fumes from an opening at the top of the cowling; the bottom or lower part of the cowling interior being sealed against entry of hot exhaust gases and fumes exiting the flue and flowing into the flue extension and being directly connected to motor-cooling air inlet ducts entering through holes in an inclined base plate forming the bottom of the outer housing flue extension into ducts extending between the flue extension and the cowling, cooling air external to the flue being drawn into the cowling via the ducts and onto the motor and through the cowling and being discharged through an opening at the top of the cowling by low pressure created by the flow of hot gases discharged S°through a gap in the top of the flue extension.
A probierii witi this type of apparatus used mialn -y fo -r a.ov.
commercial kitchens, is that when the fan in inoperative, rain water contaminated by accumulated grease, oils and the like washed by rain out from the cowling or down from the flue falls onto a roof of a building below the canopy, flows into the guttering then through a spout down into downpipes and, if not intercepted and treated ends up in storm water drains, waste oulets to flow into and pollute streams, bays, lakes and the like. A similar situation applies to other waste contaminants which are washed down from exhaust systems by rain to thereby pollute the environment, for example from factories, paint shops and automotive repair shops whenever the exhaust canopy fan is inoperative.
Collection and separation and other treatment is required prior to release of the rain water run off into drains and the like.
It is an object of this invention or improvement in and/or modification of the invention of parent patent 698736 to prevent or at least alleviate the problem of contaminated rain water caused by rain washing down fats, oils and grease pollutants or contaminants from kitchen exhaust fan canopy apparatus onto a roof of a building and into storm water systems when the exhaust canopy fan is inoperative.
The improvement in and/or modification of the main invention of patent 698736 comprises the provision of a collector device for contaminated run off rain water, the device is adapted to be fitted or is already fitted) go.leO externally to and around a flue of a vertical-discharge exhaust canopy fan i" "apparatus and above a roof line to intercept the flow of rain water containing the pollutants or contaminants when they are washed down during such times as when the exhaust canopy fan of the apparatus is inoperative.
More particularly, the device is preferably in the form of a frustro- S•conical collar serving as a collection tray for rain water and entrained waste such as fat, grease or cooking oils, the tray is adapied to be fitted around or formed as part of the flue exterior of an exhaust canopy fan and is provided S•with a water-draining outlet in a lower part or bottom of a wall, a spout being below the outlet for connection to a downpipe running to a separator.
A
3 For existing exhaust fan canopy installations with flues above roof lines, the collector device of the present form of the invention may be manufactured, sold and installed as a separate integer namely a split-segment device of two separate (but non-identical) half components which are generally semi-annular when viewed in plan, may then be fitted around the exterior of a flue extension of exhaust fan canopy apparatus and joined on site during installation.
Alternatively, the whole assembly can be factory made to incorporate a one-piece contaminated rain water collector device according to the invention already joined to the flue or flue extension as part of an integral unit.
If desired, the water run off material collected by the tray device of the present invention and the down pipe attached to it may be intercepted by separator means in form of a grease trap such as that described in our co-pending complete patent application No. 18444/99 lodged 25th February, 1999 also for a patent of addition to our same parent patent 698,736.
o o.A non-limiting example of an embodiment or practical arrangement of the contaminated rain water collector device of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic vertical sectional assembly view of the collector device of the present invention installed around the exterior of the flue of above-roof vertical discharge, exhaust fan canopy apparatus of patent S"698736.
Figure 2 is a pian view of fhe contaiinated -ail Iwater cl CL of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, the device of the present invention is applicable to the above-roof flue of exhaust fan canopy apparatus when the fan 4 motor and fan unit are inoperative usually when switched off with atmosphericcontaminating equipment shut down and in this example the fan motor, fan and linkage or coupling assembly remain the same in both the main or original invention and in that of the present updated version of the vertical-discharge exhaust fan canopy apparatus so that separate drawings of these as in Figure 3 of patent 698736 are unnecessary and have been omitted for clarity especially since the device of the present invention relates to a fixed component and not to a moving mechanical or electro-mechanical component. Figure 1 of patent 698736 has generally been retained but in an altered version which includes the collector device for contaminated rain water which is shown separately in Figure 2 of the drawings of the present specification and as an integral part of the assembly of the whole apparatus as shown in Figure 1. Referring to Figure 1 of the present specification, the relevant parts of the fully assembled exhaust fan canopy apparatus comprise; hot air and fumes exhaust flue 10 having an external surface which is preferably of cylindrical shape, flue extension 11, and inclined base plate 11 a forming the bottom or base plate of the outer housing of the flue extension 11 of the emodiment of the invention in patent 698736, motor cowling 12, cowling side wall 12a, cowling roof 21 and fan motor cooling ducts 19b, 20b. The gap between the base plate 11 a and flue 10 has been labelled 1 lb in the present specification. The new integer of the contaminated rain water collector device is labelled 26 in the total assembly view of Figure 2 and is preferably in the °oooo form of a frustro-conical tray-like collar made of any suitable material such as corrosion-resistant sheet metai for exampie siairiiess seel l or coirrosionprotected sheet metal for example powder-coated painted steel and may be installed around already-installed flues or can be made in two split segments the two halves of which are semi-annular when viewed in plan and, referring again to Figure 2 of the drawings of the present specification, are labelled 26a and 26b. For existing installations, the two segments of the tray may be overlapped at the diametrical join line in a lapped joint. The contaminated rain water collector device 26 has a contaminated water run off collection spout 27 at one side near the bottom. The device preferably also has a folded-over lower lip or flanged edge 28 and an upper lip or flanged edge 29. In the illustrated embodiment, the assembled or one-piece contaminated rain water collector device preferably has a circular central opening 30 defined by a circular edge for fitment around the exterior of the cylindrical flue It will be appreciated that althugh the contaminated rain water collector device 26 has been described and illustrated as having a circular central opening with circular surrounding edges for fitment around the exterior of a cylindrical flue, the opening could have straight edges defining a rectangular central opening to fit around the exterior of a rectangular flue but the collector device could be of any suitable geometry according to flues of different shape.
