Abstract

The invention provides an insert (1) for insertion into the interior of a carrier bag having side walls and a base, the insert comprising a container stand portion (3) adapted to abut the side walls and base of the carrier bag in use so as to be held in a substantially fixed position relative to the carrier bag and having a base; and connected to said base, an upper container receiving portion (6) for receiving and retaining at least one container having a base, a top end and an intermediate body portion; and at least two opposed support members (7, 8), each support member connecting one of the opposed sides of the base with a respective opposed side of the upper container-receiving portion (6), the support members (7, 8) being arranged, in use, to space the upper container-receiving portion (6) from and above the base such that the containers can be inserted into the upper container-receiving portion (6) such that at least one container is substantially unable to move relative to the stand portion (3) and at least a portion of the at least one container is deployed above the stand portion. The insert further comprises an item support stand portion (4) having an item support portion (18) on which an item is carried and at least one leg, the item support stand (4) being arranged to be supported on the container stand portion (3) in use, the item support portion (18) being arranged to form a barrier between the item and the top of the at least one container by extending beyond at least a portion of the at least one container extending above the support portion, thereby supporting the item when the bag is carried. The insert (1) may be used to carry one or more containers containing liquid and/or food products, whereby the container is held in a substantially upright position relative to the bag and the food product is kept separate from the container.

Inserts for shopping bags

The present invention relates to an insert for insertion into a shopping bag, and in particular to an insert allowing the reliable transport of one or more containers containing liquids and/or food products in a shopping bag.

Background technique

In recent years, providers of on-the-go food and drink products have found themselves in the need to provide consumers with a safe method of delivering on-the-go food and drink products for the sake of health and safety. Consumers are typically provided with bags, typically paper bags, for carrying their take-away drinks, which may be hot or cold drinks, for example, and/or food. Such foods may include, for example, sandwiches, baguettes, German steak, fries or salads. Beverages to take away, which may be hot beverages such as tea, coffee or soup, or cold beverages such as soft drinks, are usually provided in disposable containers, typically paper or cardboard cups. Generally, the container is placed at the bottom of the bag along with the food. Often, the container moves in the shopping bag, tilts, and may even spill onto the food, sometimes even destroying it. This is clearly unwelcome.

This method of delivering beverages to take away is particularly undesirable in hot beverage situations where spilled hot beverages may cause injury to the consumer, such as burns. Accordingly, it is highly desirable for suppliers of on-the-go beverages to provide a safe and cost-effective method of carrying beverages, especially hot beverages. This approach will minimize any potential health and safety issues that may arise from delivering to-go beverages and/or food.

US Patent No. 5,806,981 describes a tote bag of the folding type having a separating element comprising at least one opening to receive a cup in use and transverse flaps perpendicular to the divider. In this way, the cup can be secured in the divider and the food can be located on the other side of the transverse flap.

US Patent No. 4,708,248 describes a collapsible food and beverage container. In particular, this document describes a beverage and food support device that is deployable inside a bag. The structure includes first support means and second support means adapted to receive a drinking glass. Thus, a two-piece structure is described, in which each support means is held by a tab adhered to the inner wall of the bag. The first support means comprises a lip region adhered or fixed to the side wall of the bag and a support flap which, in use, is folded down 90° towards the bottom of the bag to provide support for the first support means. The second support means comprises a support plate which can be supported on top of the cup secured to the first support means. The first support means is collapsible under the weight of the container secured inside it. In addition, said device does not provide good thermal insulation between the cup and the food product supported on the second support device.

Accordingly, there is a need for an improved insert for a shopping bag in which a container can be securely retained when in use and which is substantially rigid.

Contents of the invention

It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide an improved insert for insertion into a shopping bag which allows the beverage container to be reliably transported in a substantially vertical position relative to the bag.

It is a further object of the present invention to provide an improved insert for insertion into a shopping bag which allows the food product to be thermally insulated from the container holding the liquid in the insert.

Accordingly, the present invention provides an insert for insertion into the interior of a shopping bag having side walls and a bottom, said insert comprising:

A container support portion adapted, in use, to abut the side walls and bottom of the shopping bag so as to maintain a substantially fixed position relative to the shopping bag, and having:

(a) a bottom; and connected to said bottom,

(b) an upper container receiving portion for receiving and retaining at least one container having a bottom, a top and a middle body portion; and

(c) at least two opposed support members each connecting one of the opposing sides of the base to a corresponding opposing side of the upper container-receiving portion, said support members being arranged to space the upper container-receiving portion from the base in use; open and above it so that the container can be inserted into the upper container receiving portion such that at least one container is substantially immovable relative to the support portion and at least a portion of the at least one container is spread over the support portion .

Suitably, the insert is in collapsible folded form. The insert according to the invention can be secured to the inside wall of a shopping bag.

Suitably, the insert further comprises an item support portion having an item support portion on which an item is carried and at least one leg, the item support being arranged in use by extending beyond the At least a portion of the at least one container is supported on the container support portion, and the item support portion is arranged to form a barrier between the item and the top of the at least one container to support the item while the bag is being carried.

The insert according to the invention allows containers, such as cups containing beverages, to be transported reliably in shopping bags in an upright position relative to the bag. Thus, the risk of the beverage spilling and causing injury to the user is minimized. Furthermore, carried items, preferably non-liquid items such as food, including for example sandwiches, baguettes, wraps, fries, German steaks, salads, may be supported by the insert without contact with the holding part. At least one of the vessels in the vessel holder portion is in contact. Furthermore, a desired position of the item support portion can be obtained without interference with the container.

Suitably, the article support portion is arranged in use such that it is parallel to the container support portion. The item holder portion may be arranged, in use, to be supported on the container holder portion without interfering with at least part of at least one container held in the container holder portion. This means that the item support portion may be arranged in use such that it does not rest on top of the at least one container. Desirably, the item support portion provides a substantially flat surface for supporting items, such as food, in the bag.

The item support portion may be arranged to be supported in use on the container support portion by a plurality of legs. Preferably the legs extend from the article support portion such that they rest on container support portions on at least two opposite sides of the container. They may be substantially perpendicular to and supported on the container support portion such that the item support portion is held above the container support portion in a table-like manner in use. In order to provide further stability at several legs, the legs may be connected by leg connecting parts.

In one desired configuration, the item support portion includes a base. Desirably, leg attachment portions may be formed by at least a portion of said base. Preferably, the leg attachment portion may be a continuous member adapted to extend substantially across the entire interior lateral space of the bag. The bottom is adapted to receive the top end of at least one container held in the container holder portion.

Suitably, the bottom of the item holder portion includes at least one container receiving opening adapted to receive the top end of at least one container held in the container holder portion. The item holder portion receives the top end of at least one container held in the container holder portion such that the container is substantially immovable relative to the item holder portion. Thus, the container remains in a substantially vertical position relative to the bag.

Suitably the article support portion, base and legs form a continuous body. Preferably, the continuous body is rectangular.

Preferably, the insert according to the invention comprises a continuous body. The continuous body of material is adapted to form the container holder portion and the article holder portion by providing a suitable sheet of material which can take the desired shape.

Suitably, an insert according to the invention comprises a substantially planar member having a plurality of fold lines. The insert can be folded along fold lines to form the container support portion and the item support portion.

Preferably, the container support portion and the item support portion comprise a rectangular body formed by folding the insert along fold lines.

Suitably, the insert according to the invention is in a collapsible outwardly folded form, more desirably the insert, when folded outwardly, is also adapted to maintain its expanded form by tensioning itself within the shopping bag. Thus, the insert can be inserted into a collapsible shopping bag and still be collapsible whereby the bag and insert can be stored flat for convenience. When folded outward within the bag, the insert forms a substantially rigid self-supporting unit and provides support to the side walls of the shopping bag. The insert according to the invention is adapted to support the weight of at least one container and/or the food product held inside without shrinking due to the weight of the at least one container or the food product.

Suitably, the shopping bag is rectangular and the insert is shaped to match. Those skilled in the art will recognize that inserts according to the present invention can be shaped to match different shapes of shopping bags.

Suitably, the shopping bag comprises a paper bag. Those skilled in the art will recognize that inserts according to the invention may be used with other types of bags. Also, the size of the insert can be chosen according to the size of the shopping bag it is used to place inside.

Suitably, the insert comprises a material such as cardboard, plastic material or molded fiber material. The material provides rigidity to the insert such that the insert can support at least one container and/or food without shrinking.

Those skilled in the art will appreciate that the dimensions of the insert may vary such that the insert is of a size suitable to accommodate, for example, a small, medium or large drinking glass or container.

In one embodiment of the invention there is provided an insert for insertion into the interior of a shopping bag having side walls and a bottom, the insert comprising:

(i) a container support portion adapted, in use, to abut the side walls and bottom of the shopping bag so as to maintain a substantially fixed position relative to the shopping bag, and having:

(a) a bottom; and connected to said bottom,

(b) an upper container receiving portion having at least one container engaging opening defined inside said receiving portion and arranged to have a base, a top end and a center body portion at a location on said intermediate body portion container clamping; and

(c) at least two opposed support members each connecting one of the opposing sides of the base to a corresponding opposing side of the upper container-receiving portion, said support members being arranged to space the upper container-receiving portion from the base in use; open and positioned above the bottom such that the container can be inserted into the at least one container-receiving opening and thus remain substantially vertical relative to the shopping bag;

(ii) an article holder portion arranged, in use, above said container holder portion and having

(a) a bottom; and connected to said bottom,

(b) an article support portion having a top surface thereon on which articles can be supported; and

(c) at least two opposed support members each connecting one of the opposed sides of the base to a corresponding opposed side of the article support portion, said support members being arranged to space the article support portion from the base in use and located above the base; said base having at least one container-receiving opening in its interior, said container-receiving opening being arranged to allow a container tip to be inserted into the space between said base and the article support portion;

Such that, in use, items may be kept separate from said container inside the shopping bag.

Suitably, the support members of the item holder portion may comprise legs.

Preferably, the container holder portion and the article holder portion of the insert are connected. The container holder portion and the article holder portion of the insert are suitably connected by one of said support members.

Preferably, the item holder portion is arranged, in use, to abut a side wall of the shopping bag so as to remain in a substantially fixed position relative to the shopping bag. This construction provides additional stiffness to the bag.

Preferably, the item support portion has at least one container receiving opening on its bottom arranged to allow a container tip to be inserted into the space between said bottom and the item support portion. This allows to accommodate containers such as drinking glasses with lids of different heights or slanted lids. Also suitably, the container top is spaced from the item support portion of the item holder portion. This allows circulation of steam from the hot beverage located in the container. Also, food placed on the top surface of the article support portion does not come into direct contact with the container.

Suitably, the top surface of the article support portion further comprises a layer of material adapted to insulate the article carried on the article support portion from moisture and/or temperature fluctuations which may be contained Beverage in at least one container held in the container holder portion causes. Suitably, said layer of material comprises a thermally insulating material. Insulation materials may include aluminum foil or polystyrene.

The presence of the insulating layer means that items, in particular food products, carried on the top surface of the item support portion are not affected by the temperature of the beverage held in the container holder portion. In particular, the food product is not affected by heat or steam, eg from a hot beverage held in the insert, or by ice soda. Thus, an insulating spacer is formed between the container held in the container holder portion and the food product supported on the top surface of the item support portion of the item holder.

Suitably, the at least one container engaging opening of the upper container receiving portion of the container holder portion comprises a plurality of slots adapted to grip a container. The container engagement opening may be adapted to grip the container at a location on the intermediate body portion of the container. Suitably, said slots include gripping mouths formed such that they have deformable clips around said mouths, said mouths being deformed upon insertion of a container to grip said container. Desirably, the periphery of the container engagement opening can be enlarged so that containers having different diameters can be secured therein. Suitably, the container can be removed from the container engaging opening by twisting and lifting the container.

Those skilled in the art will appreciate that the container may be clamped in the slot such that the bottom of the container is positioned spaced from the bottom of the container holder portion.

Suitably, an insert according to the invention is adapted, in use, to lower the container holder portion into a pocket position such that at least one container can be secured therein, and the item holder portion can thereby be lowered to rest on the container holder portion. The top of the at least one container may then be received in the item holder portion.

In a further embodiment, the present invention provides an assembly comprising a shopping bag having a plurality of side walls and a bottom, and an insert having:

(i) a container support portion adapted, in use, to abut the side walls and bottom of the shopping bag so as to maintain a substantially fixed position relative to the shopping bag, and having:

(a) a bottom; and connected to said bottom,

(b) an upper container receiving portion having at least one container engaging opening defined inside said receiving portion and arranged to have a base, a top end and a center body portion at a location on said intermediate body portion container clamping; and

(c) at least two opposed support members each connecting one of the opposed sides of the base to a corresponding opposed side of the upper container receiving portion, said support members being arranged to hold the upper container receiving portion to the base in use spaced and located above the base such that the container can be inserted into the at least one container-receiving opening and thus remain substantially vertical relative to the shopping bag;

(ii) an article holder portion arranged, in use, above said container holder portion and having

(a) a bottom; and connected to said bottom,

(b) an article support portion having a top surface thereon on which articles can be supported; and

(c) at least two opposed support members each connecting one of the opposing sides of the base to a corresponding opposing side of the article support portion, said support members being arranged to hold the article support portion spaced apart from the base in use and located above the bottom; said bottom having at least one container receiving opening in its interior, said container receiving opening being arranged to allow a top end of a container to be inserted into the space between said bottom and the article support portion;

Such that, in use, items may be kept separate from said container inside the shopping bag.

Preferably, the bag comprises a collapsible paper bag.

Suitably, an insert according to the invention may be secured to the inner side wall of the bag.

Preferably, the insert is securable to the inner side wall of the bag by a support member. It is further preferred that the insert is fixable to the inner side wall of the bag by a support member connecting the item holder portion and the container holder portion. Suitably, the support member is coated with adhesive such that it can be adhered to the inner side wall of the bag.

Detailed ways

The specific embodiment shown in Figures 2A-4D is an embodiment having a container holder portion and an item holder portion. This embodiment will be described in detail below with reference to the drawings. However, those skilled in the art will appreciate that each part constitutes a separate aspect of the invention and can be used independently. The embodiment shown in Figures 2A-4D is an embodiment having the advantage of combining the two parts of the insert according to the invention.

Referring to Figure 2A, an insert according to the present invention in an unfolded, non-erect configuration is indicated generally at 1 in plan view. In the shown embodiment, the insert 1 comprises a blank in the form of a whole cardboard. Fold lines 2 are marked on the insert 1 , defining each part of the insert 1 . The fold lines may be provided by any suitable means such as stamping. As shown in Figures 2B and 2C, the insert 1 is folded along the folding line 2 so as to stand upright to form a box-like rectangular structure. This is in use upright configuration. The box-like structure forms a rigid self-supporting unit.

As shown in FIGS. 2A , 2B and 2C , the insert 1 comprises a plurality of parts, including a container holder part 3 and an item holder part 4 . In the illustrated embodiment, the container holder part 3 and the object holder part 4 are rectangular. The container holder part 3 includes a bottom 5 and an upper container receiving part 6 . In the in-use upright configuration, the bottom 5 of the container support portion 3 is spaced from the upper container receiving portion 6 by opposing support members 7,8. The support member 7 connects opposite sides 9 , 9 a of the bottom 5 with corresponding opposite sides 10 , 10 a of the upper container receiving portion 6 .

The container receiving part 6 is provided with a tab 11 . The tab 11 connects the upper container receiving part 6 to the support 8 at a position intermediate the opposite sides 12 , 12 a of the support member 8 . Referring to Fig. 2A, dashed lines indicate that the size of the tabs 11, 11a can be increased.

As shown in FIGS. 2B and 2C , the support members 7 , 8 are arranged to hold the upper container receiving portion 6 spaced from and above the bottom 5 in use, thereby defining a chamber 13 . In the illustrated embodiment, the upper container receiving part 6 is provided with two container engaging openings 14 arranged to grip a container 15 . The container engagement opening 14 comprises a circular opening, the periphery of which is provided with a plurality of slots 16 . The slot 16 engages the container 15 at a position intermediate its ends.

Referring to Figures 2A, 2B and 2C, the item support portion 4 includes a bottom 17 and an item support portion 18 having a top surface 19 on which items are carried. The item holder also includes a support member 20 . Support members 20 connect opposing sides 21 , 21 a of article support portion 18 to opposing sides 22 , 22 a of base 17 . Thus, in use, in the folded configuration, the article support portion 18 is spaced from the bottom 17 by the support member 20 to define a cavity 23 . The bottom 17 is provided with a tab 11a which, in the upright configuration in use, is attached to the support member 8 at a position intermediate the opposite sides 12, 12a of the support member. Thus a box-like structure is formed.

Referring to FIG. 2A , in the illustrated embodiment, the bottom 17 of the item holder portion 4 has two container receiving openings 24 defined therein. Each container receiving opening 24 is shaped to receive the top end of said container when the container is engaged in the container holder portion 3 .

Referring to FIGS. 3A to 4D , in use, the insert 1 is adhered to the side wall 25 of the shopping bag 26 by the support member 8 . The bag 26 comprises a standard foldable paper shopping bag commonly used by consumers, having side walls 25 , 25 a , 25 b , 25 c and a bottom 27 . In the illustrated embodiment, adhesive is used to secure the support member 8 to the inner side wall 25 of the shopping bag 26 .

As shown in Figures 3A and 4A, the insert 1 may be flat-packed against the inner side wall 25 of the shopping bag 26 when it is not in use. This feature allows the (foldable paper) shopping bag with the insert secured therein to be stored flat, allowing for convenient storage. Referring to FIGS. 3A and 4D , in use, the beverage and/or food supplier opens the shopping bag 26 and unfolds the container support portion 3 so that it drops towards the bottom 27 of the shopping bag 26 . In the extended position, the bottom 5 of the container support portion 3 abuts the bottom 27 and the side walls 25, 25a, 25b and 25c of the shopping bag 26. The supplier then places a container having a bottom, a top and a middle body portion, such as a cup containing a drink, into the container engaging opening 14 of the upper container receiving portion 6 . The container 15 is clamped in position intermediate its ends by a plurality of slots 16 and is held in a substantially vertical position relative to the shopping bag 26 .

Referring to FIGS. 3B , 3C and 4D , the item holder portion 4 is then lowered to deploy over the container 15 . Referring to FIGS. 4C and 4D , in the embodiment shown, the bottom 17 is provided with two container receiving openings 24 for receiving the top ends of containers clamped in the container holder portion 3 . The top end of the container 15 is received within a cavity 23 defined by an item support portion 18 spaced from and above the bottom 17 . The container is thus secured in the article holder part 4 and the container holder part 3 of the insert 1 . Referring to FIG. 4D , in the upright configuration in use, the insert 1 forms a rigid structure, tensioning itself against the side walls of the shopping bag 26 . This gives strength and stiffness to the shopping bag.

Foodstuffs can be placed on the top surface 19 of the item support portion 18 of the item holder portion 4 . The top surface 19 includes a layer of insulating material. The item support portion 18 forms a barrier between the top of the container 15 and the food product placed on the top surface 19 of the item support portion 18 . Thus, the food product can remain isolated from the container and not be affected by the temperature of the beverage. This means, for example, that food can be prevented from heating up if the container, for example, contains a hot beverage.
