Definitions
- the invention relates to a security element, a method for manufacturing a security element, and a security document with a security element.
- Valuable documents within the meaning of the invention include, among others, banknotes, shares, bonds, certificates, vouchers, checks, airline tickets, high-quality admission tickets, product security labels, credit or debit cards, but also other documents susceptible to forgery, such as passports, identity cards or other identification documents.
- Valuable documents are typically made from paper substrates, polymer substrates, or combinations of paper and polymer, incorporating special security features such as a security thread embedded at least partially in the paper or a watermark. Additional security features can include so-called window films, security threads, or security tapes, which can be affixed, laminated, or embedded onto the document.
- Security elements usually consist of a polymer or polymer compositions as the substrate or base material. Typically, security elements feature optically variable security characteristics such as holograms or specific color-shifting effects to enhance counterfeit protection. The particular advantage of optically variable security elements is that their security features cannot be replicated simply by copying them with photocopiers, as the effects of an optically variable security feature are lost or even appear black during copying.
- integrating negative patterns into an area with a color-shifting effect requires that the layers of the thin-film element responsible for the color-shifting effect be at least partially removed at the points where the negative patterns are to be applied.
- the spacer layer of a thin-film element is formed by a film.
- the thin-film element can be arranged over a hologram.
- DE 10 2008 013 167 A1 shows a thin-film element over a partially metallized relief structure.
- a first aspect of the invention relates to a safety element comprising: a substrate material having a first and a second main surface facing each other; an absorber layer, a dielectric layer, and a semi-reflective layer arranged on the first main surface; wherein the dielectric layer is arranged between the absorber layer and the semi-reflective layer, and the absorber layer is arranged between the dielectric layer and the substrate material; and a contrast layer located closest to the absorber layer, starting from the semi-reflective layer, the dielectric layer, and the absorber layer.
- the layer sequence of the semi-reflective layer, the dielectric layer, and the absorber layer forms a thin-film structure with a color-shifting effect.
- the substrate material is arranged between the contrast layer and the absorber layer.
- the contrast layer is a layer of dark printing ink or a dark resist varnish.
- the substrate material can have one or more areas to be coated, in which the absorber layer, the dielectric layer, and the partially reflective layer are arranged.
- the substrate material is preferably a film-like material.
- the at least one area to be coated is preferably arranged on a main surface of the substrate material. If the substrate material has several areas to be coated, these can be arranged on only one of the two main surfaces or on both main surfaces of the substrate material. In particular, an area to be coated can be a thin-film element area or a color-shift area.
- the area of the substrate material to be coated can have various surface shapes.
- the area to be coated can be rectangular, oval, star-shaped, or serpentine.
- the shape and size of the area to be coated are preferably defined or determined in a process layer.
- the area of the substrate material to be coated can have a surface structure and/or surface finish that differs from other areas of the substrate material.
- the substrate material has an area that is defined as the area to be coated.
- the absorber layer, the dielectric layer, and the semi-reflective layer are arranged or applied over the entire surface of the area to be coated.
- the absorber layer, the dielectric layer, and the semi-reflective layer can
- the safety element can be applied or vapor-deposited using physical vapor deposition.
- the safety element can have a relief structure.
- this relief structure can be provided on the first main surface of the carrier medium.
- the relief structure can be provided by means of an embossed coating layer arranged on the first main surface of the carrier medium.
- the relief structure can be provided in the dielectric layer, so that the dielectric layer does not have a constant thickness.
- the security element can be designed as a so-called T-patch or T-lead, in which the carrier medium is removed before being applied to a document substrate.
- the security element can be designed as a so-called L-patch or L-lead, in which the carrier medium is bonded to the document substrate. This means the carrier medium is not removed from the security element.
- the layer sequence consisting of a partially reflective layer, a dielectric layer and an absorber layer, wherein the dielectric layer is arranged between the partially reflective layer and the absorber layer, forms a thin-film structure with a color-shifting effect or a thin-film element with a color-shifting effect.
- the safety element has a protective layer that is arranged in the (entire) area to be coated.
- the protective layer is arranged on/at the partially reflective layer.
- the protective layer comprises a protective lacquer.
- the protective layer comprises a heat-seal lacquer and/or a primer.
- the carrier material comprises a carrier film.
- the carrier material comprises polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and/or polypropylene (PP); a carrier material made of PET or PP is especially preferred.
- a security element according to this invention can, in particular, comprise a film or a multilayer substrate, wherein the multilayer substrate can also comprise a combination of fabric substrates and films.
- the security element can include a window area that serves to fill or bridge a hole in a valuable document or in the paper substrate of the valuable document.
- a security window can be incorporated into a valuable document using the security element.
- the area to be coated is located in the window area of the security element.

- the security element can be a security thread or tape, window thread, patch, or the like.
- the thin-film element i.e., the partially reflective layer, the dielectric layer, and the absorber layer—can be made opaque in the areas with the contrast layer, while the thin-film element is semi-transparent in the areas without the contrast layer. Consequently, additional information can be incorporated into the security element very easily and quickly by structuring the contrast layer.
- the contrast layer is a structured layer, i.e., a structured contrast layer.
- a structured contrast layer is understood to mean that the contrast layer forms a pattern or motif which is visible to an observer when viewing the security element.
- a structured contrast layer means, in particular, that the contrast layer is not uniformly or completely applied to/over the absorber layer or the substrate. Rather, due to the structured contrast layer, there are areas/sub-areas within the area to be coated where the contrast layer is omitted.
- the structured contrast layer forms a predetermined motif or pattern, such as a character, a string of characters, and/or an image.
- This motif or pattern determines the structure of the structured contrast layer.
- the motif can, for example, be visible or recognizable to an observer when viewing the security element through the surface, looking in the direction of the principal surface normals or perpendicular to the first principal surface of the substrate material that contains the area to be coated.
